Why an idle inverter can use battery power
An inverter converts battery power into AC power, but it can also consume some energy to keep its electronics operating. Manufacturers describe this as no-load or standby power consumption. The draw is not the same for every model, and an inverter may use different amounts in normal, search, ECO, or other modes. Check the no-load or standby specification in the manual for the exact model rather than relying on a figure from another inverter.

Any ongoing draw adds up over time, but a useful runtime estimate requires the inverter’s actual standby draw, the battery’s usable capacity and system voltage, conversion losses, other connected loads, and cutoff settings. A relative reduction figure alone cannot tell you how long a particular battery will last.
How ECO and other operating modes change the draw
ECO or load-search mode
Some inverters reduce idle consumption by entering standby and periodically checking whether a load is present. In the documented SUN Inverter manual, Victron says ECO mode briefly switches the inverter on every three seconds to detect a load. Victron states that ECO mode reduces no-load inverter power consumption by approximately 85% when no loads are connected. Because ECO mode periodically checks for a load, confirm that it detects the devices you intend to power. Detection behavior and settings are model-specific.
Off and charger-only modes
Mode labels do not mean the same thing on every system. On the documented SUN Inverter, CHARGE mode turns the inverter off while the solar charger remains operational. Its manual says AC loads cannot discharge the battery while panel voltage is higher than battery voltage. This behavior is specific to that product; consult your own manual before relying on a charger-only setting.

Some models also have a true off position. Victron’s Inverter Smart manual says the main switch on the documented 5 kVA model cuts supply current completely when off. Do not assume that a standby or ECO setting is equivalent to fully off. See the Victron Inverter Smart manual: Operation.
Hybrid solar systems
A hybrid inverter may manage battery charge as well as convert power. Fronius documents energy-saving standby and forced recharge to a minimum state-of-charge setpoint on the cited Primo GEN24 systems. Those functions can affect what the system does while it appears idle, so check the operating state and battery-management settings for your model. What inverter draw does—and does not—say about battery life
Standby consumption uses stored energy; it is not, by itself, a measure of long-term battery aging. The cited manufacturer documentation establishes that inverters can consume energy without an AC load and that some systems manage a minimum state of charge. It does not establish a universal effect of standby draw on battery lifespan or support a specific lifespan estimate.
To estimate runtime, use the actual standby figure for your inverter and account for the battery’s usable capacity, voltage, conversion losses, other loads, and system cutoff settings. The approximately 85% ECO reduction stated for the documented SUN Inverter is relative to that inverter’s no-load consumption; it is not enough on its own to calculate runtime.

How to check whether your inverter is draining the battery
- Identify its state. Check whether the inverter is on, in ECO or search mode, in standby, in charger-only mode, or fully off. Use your model’s manual because labels and behavior vary.
- Find the model-specific no-load specification. Look for terms such as “no-load,” “standby,” or “power consumption.” Do not substitute a specification from a different model.
- Check for other connected loads. AC and DC equipment can draw power even when it appears idle. Inspect what is connected rather than assuming the inverter itself is the only possible source of consumption.
- Review hybrid-system settings. If you have a hybrid solar inverter, check its operating state, energy-saving options, and minimum state-of-charge or recharge settings.
- Measure only with suitable equipment. A compatible, appropriately rated DC battery monitor can help investigate current draw. Follow the equipment instructions; compatibility and safe installation depend on the electrical system.
