Rockstar has announced the game for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but its published GTA VI information does not promise that players on those systems can play together or move saves between them.
What the two features mean
Cross-play lets players on different hardware join the same multiplayer session. For example, a PlayStation player could enter a match with someone using Xbox or PC, if the game and its matchmaking settings support those platforms.

Cross-progression keeps eligible progress available when you move between linked platforms. Depending on the game, that can include level, unlocks, challenges, campaign progress, statistics and seasonal progression. It does not automatically mean that every purchase, premium currency balance or platform entitlement transfers.

A game may allow cross-play without allowing saves to move between systems, or it may share progression while restricting multiplayer matchmaking. Always check the publisher’s account policy rather than assuming one feature guarantees the other.

GTA VI: what is confirmed and what is not
Announced platforms
Rockstar’s support information, updated August 18, 2026, says Grand Theft Auto VI can be pre-ordered for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. The page describes Standard and Ultimate editions. It does not announce a PC version.
The same published information does not confirm cross-play, cross-progression, shared saves, or a Rockstar account system for moving GTA VI progress between PlayStation and Xbox. Therefore, the accurate answer is unannounced, not yes or no. Rockstar could add or restrict these features later, but no current policy establishes them.
Can a PS5 player play with an Xbox Series X|S friend?
There is no Rockstar confirmation that GTA VI multiplayer will connect PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S players. Until Rockstar publishes a platform-support matrix or an explicit cross-play announcement, buy and plan for each console as a separate environment.

There is no confirmed GTA VI cross-progression policy. Do not assume that signing into the same Rockstar account will transfer a character, campaign save, online rank, purchases or other progress between PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

What current GTA Online transfers tell us
Rockstar’s current Grand Theft Auto Online Character Transfers policy is useful precedent, but it is not a GTA VI promise. The policy allows PlayStation 4 or Xbox One profiles to migrate to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S. It also states that profiles cannot migrate between PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, or from either console family to PC.
Rockstar’s exact wording, published January 29, 2025, is: “Profiles cannot be migrated between PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S or from PlayStation or Xbox console families to PC.”
A separate Rockstar notice, published February 24, 2026, warns that cross-generation progress does not continue to synchronize after migration: “Important: Once your progress has been transferred from PlayStation 4 or Xbox One to PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S, your migrated profile will be retained on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One. GTA Online progress made on different console generations will not be synced after migration.”

Those rules describe the existing GTA Online transfer process. They do not establish how GTA VI will handle saves, online characters, accounts or future PC support.

Call of Duty: cross-play and cross-progression are documented
Cross-play
Activision says Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 cross-play allows players on all supported platforms to play together. The practical result is that your platform does not have to match a friend’s platform, provided both versions are supported and cross-play has not been disabled in the game’s settings or by an account restriction.
Activision’s broader account guidance describes crossplay-enabled games as storing progression on the Activision account instead of solely on a platform account. That account-based design is the foundation for using one Call of Duty identity across linked systems.
Cross-progression
Black Ops 6 documentation says progress carries across every platform linked to the same Activision account. Activision’s Black Ops 7 support page says cross-progression continues through that account and works on any linked platform. It identifies Co-op Campaign, Multiplayer, Zombies and Warzone as modes in which progression can be earned.
Activision’s exact Black Ops 7 wording, published December 19, 2025, is: “Cross-progression continues in Call of Duty®: Black Ops 7, the unified playing experience that ties your progression to your Activision account.”

Its account guidance, published September 28, 2026, explains: “Because game progression in crossplay-enabled games is stored on your Activision account, you can play on any platform you have linked to your account, and your progression carries over.”
The account requirement
Cross-progression depends on using one Activision account. Link your PlayStation Network, Xbox, Steam, Battle.net or other supported platform identity to that same account before you start playing on another device. If you accidentally create or use a second Activision account, progress earned there will remain associated with the second account rather than merging automatically.
Linking accounts does not erase platform-specific purchasing rules. A game license may still be required on each platform, and Activision can apply separate rules to premium currency, bundles, subscriptions or other entitlements. Check the title’s current policy before buying an item solely because you expect to use it on another system.

The difference is not simply “console versus PC.” Call of Duty publishes an account policy that defines how linked platforms share progress. Rockstar’s available GTA VI information currently defines editions and platforms but not a comparable sharing policy.

Modern Warfare 4 as a current platform example
Activision’s July 20, 2026 editions page lists Modern Warfare 4 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Battle.net, Steam and Nintendo Switch 2. It gives a worldwide launch date of October 23, 2026.
That editions page confirms where the product is listed, but it does not provide a dedicated cross-play matrix. Use Activision’s general account and crossplay documentation for the cross-progression explanation; do not infer that every listed platform has identical matchmaking, features or purchase entitlements until Activision publishes the title-specific details.
What to do before switching platforms
If you are moving Call of Duty progress
- Sign in to the Activision account you already use for Call of Duty.
- Open the account’s linked-accounts area and verify that your PlayStation, Xbox or PC identity is connected to that same account.
- Do not unlink an account merely to test another login. Unlinking can create access and progression problems, and it does not merge two separate Activision accounts.
- Install the supported Call of Duty title on the new platform and sign in with the linked platform identity.
- Confirm that your profile, level and eligible unlocks appear before purchasing additional content.
If progress is missing, first check the exact Activision account email and linked platform identity. Signing into the correct console profile while the game is connected to a different Activision account is the most important distinction to resolve.
If you are buying GTA VI
- Choose the platform you expect to use most: PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X|S.
- Verify the edition, region and platform before ordering, since Rockstar has not announced cross-console transfer rights for GTA VI.
- Keep receipts and account details for the purchasing platform.
- Watch Rockstar’s official support updates for a later cross-play, cross-progression or PC announcement.
Until Rockstar publishes a policy, the safest assumption is that a GTA VI purchase and any future progress may be tied to the platform family on which you use it.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
- Confusing cross-play with cross-progression: Playing in the same match does not prove that saves or purchases transfer.
- Using different Activision accounts: Call of Duty progress follows the account, not simply the console owner or email used by a store.
- Assuming a GTA Online transfer guarantees GTA VI support: Rockstar’s existing migration rules are explicitly limited and do not announce GTA VI behavior.
- Treating a platform list as a cross-play promise: An editions page can show where a game is sold without defining matchmaking between those platforms.
- Expecting every entitlement to move: Even when progression carries over, platform licenses, premium currency and purchased content can follow separate rules.
- Assuming future PC availability: GTA VI’s cited Rockstar information lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S only; it does not announce PC.
Which game is safer for a multi-platform group?
For a group that already owns different systems, Call of Duty is the documented choice. Activision’s cross-play support is designed to put players on supported platforms together, and its account system carries eligible progression when those platforms are linked correctly.
GTA VI is a wait-for-policy purchase. If playing with a friend on the other console is essential, do not buy on the assumption that cross-play will exist. If moving from PlayStation 5 to Xbox Series X|S matters, do not assume your character or saves will transfer. Rockstar may clarify both questions later, but the current GTA VI platform announcement does not answer them.
Bottom line
Call of Duty supports cross-play and cross-progression in its documented current account ecosystem: link every platform to the same Activision account, then eligible progress can follow you. GTA VI is confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, but Rockstar has not confirmed cross-play, cross-progression or PC availability for it. Treat GTA VI as platform-specific until Rockstar publishes a dedicated policy.
