No. In God of War Ragnarök, changing an item’s appearance does not change the gameplay properties of the gear you have equipped. Use Edit Appearance to keep the stats and perks of your equipped armor while choosing a different look from the appearances available to you. The feature is available from the beginning of the game on PlayStation and PC after the January 30, 2025 update.
What changes—and what stays the same?
Think of gear and appearance as two separate choices. Your equipped armor supplies its gameplay properties, such as stats and perks; the appearance setting changes how that equipment looks. Santa Monica Studio described transmog as a way to pair the equipment perks you want with your preferred look in its official gameplay tips.

- For a build: choose equipment based on its gameplay properties and upgrades.

For example, if you prefer the look of one armor set but want to use another set’s perks, equip the gear with the perks you want and apply the preferred appearance, if it is available. The look is not a separate stat-bearing build.

Open the equipment menu, select the armor piece you want to customize, and choose Edit Appearance. Pick an appearance available for that item and confirm. The appearance selection changes its visual presentation; the equipment you actually have equipped remains the source of its gameplay properties.

The available looks depend on what you have in your inventory or have unlocked. A specific reward, shop purchase, edition bonus, or New Game Plus condition may be required for some appearances.
Is Level 9 still required to change an appearance?
No—not on PlayStation or PC with the January 30, 2025 update. At launch, PlayStation’s November 2022 guide said equipment had to reach Level 9 before its appearance could be edited. Santa Monica Studio’s January 29, 2025 update announcement says Edit Appearance became available from the beginning of the game for all PlayStation and PC players when the update released on January 30, 2025.

That update changed the unlock requirement; it did not make appearance editing a gear upgrade. Upgrading equipment and choosing how it looks remain separate actions.

How New Game Plus appearances differ from upgrades
New Game Plus adds both appearance options and equipment progression, but they are not the same system. Santa Monica Studio’s New Game Plus guide describes 13 remixed armor appearances with new color combinations and styles. They can be purchased at the Huldra Brothers’ Shop and applied to existing Level 9-or-higher armor. The guide separately explains that Level 9 equipment can be converted into Plus versions for additional progression.

The same guide says the new Berserker Armor appearance is acquired by defeating the Berserker King in New Game Plus. That is a specific reward condition, not a general requirement to unlock Edit Appearance.

Edition and promotional labels tell you how particular content is offered; they do not make that content a prerequisite for transmog. PlayStation’s God of War Ragnarök FAQ lists Risen Snow Armor and Atreus Risen Snow Tunic as preorder bonuses, and Darkdale Armor and Darkdale Attire (cosmetic) as Digital Deluxe Edition content. Those labels should not be confused with the properties of other gear you equip.

PlayStation’s game page says the Dark Odyssey collection became available at no additional cost to owners on PlayStation Store and PC on March 22, 2025, for the series’ 20th anniversary. Store availability and collection details can change; check the relevant PlayStation Store listing for current availability. The cited announcement does not establish item-by-item stats or a complete list of appearance slots, so it should not be treated as evidence that every item can be applied to every piece of gear.

- Compare armor pieces by their equipped gameplay properties and upgrade level.
- Choose an appearance separately, from looks available to you for that item.
- Check a reward or edition’s unlock conditions when a particular look is missing; owning a cosmetic does not by itself upgrade your equipped gear.
