Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYes—both are possible, but neither effect is identical across all GNOME Shell weather extensions. Privacy depends on how an extension determines your location, which weather or geocoding services it contacts, and whether it documents analytics or caching. Performance depends on its code, refresh schedule, animation, and compatibility with your GNOME Shell release.
Weather data must normally be retrieved from the internet, so at least one request leaves your computer. A location chosen manually can disclose less than automatic IP geolocation, while a poorly implemented extension can consume shell resources because its JavaScript runs inside the GNOME Shell process. However, no controlled comparison establishes a typical CPU, memory, battery, or responsiveness cost for weather extensions. Treat the exact extension and version—not the category—as the subject of your privacy and performance assessment.

What a GNOME weather extension can expose
A weather display seems simple: show temperature, conditions, and an icon in the panel. To do that, an extension usually has to resolve a place and request weather data. Those operations can involve several systems:

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minute- Location input: a city selected by you, latitude and longitude, GNOME’s location service (GeoClue), or an IP-geolocation lookup.
- Geocoding: converting a place name or coordinates into a location that a weather service accepts. This can involve a separate service from the weather provider.
- Weather retrieval: a request to one or more providers, potentially on every refresh.
- Local behavior: timers, notifications, animated artwork, and cached data running as part of GNOME Shell.
Because each extension chooses its own providers and defaults, two extensions that look alike in the panel can have materially different data flows. A listing’s privacy wording describes the author’s stated design; it is not an independent audit of every release. For higher assurance, inspect the current source code or observe the extension’s network behavior.

Why location settings are the main privacy decision
Manually selected city or coordinates
Choosing a city in the extension’s preferences generally avoids sending your public IP to an IP-geolocation service. The weather provider still receives the selected place, and a geocoding service may receive the search text or coordinates, but the request need not reveal your network address as a location signal. Manual coordinates can be more precise than a city name, so use a level of precision that matches your comfort.
Automatic IP geolocation
An automatic mode may send your public IP to a geolocation service, which estimates an area and returns coordinates for weather lookup. The Weatherglass documentation explicitly says that its automatic IP mode includes the public IP in the request and offers city selection as an alternative. That statement applies to that extension’s documented behavior, not to every extension using automatic location.
GNOME location services
Some extensions use GeoClue or another system location service. This can avoid an extension performing its own IP lookup, but it does not make location processing disappear: the system service and the extension’s chosen weather or geocoding provider remain relevant. Check both GNOME’s location permissions and the extension’s own settings before assuming that “system location” means local-only processing.

Provider and geocoder chains
A single weather update can involve more than one organization. An extension might send a city name to a geocoder, then send returned coordinates to a weather API. It might use different providers for forecasts, maps, and reverse geocoding. The names shown in the listing or preferences are therefore important: they tell you which parties may receive a location-related request, even when the extension itself is free.

What specific listings reveal
The following examples illustrate why a generic claim about “GNOME weather extensions” is misleading. They are descriptions of the cited listings and documentation, not a guarantee that current or replacement versions behave identically.
| Extension or listing | Documented location behavior | Documented data sources or dependencies | Privacy and performance significance |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenWeather Refined | “My Location” uses location services and Nominatim, with an IP-geolocation service as a fallback. | External weather providers; the listing says the extension is retired and points users to SimpleWeather. | Its disclosure demonstrates that fallback IP lookup can be part of a location path. Because it is retired, verify any replacement independently rather than transferring its behavior to another extension. |
| Weatherglass, version 7 listing | Automatic GeoClue or IP-based location; city search and manual coordinates are available. | Open-Meteo, MET Norway, and NOAA NWS. | The author says IP mode includes the public IP. The listing also describes animation at about 20 frames per second that pauses when the display is unmapped; that is an implementation detail, not a benchmark of CPU or battery use. |
| Weather or Not | The listing does not establish a unique location privacy model. | Requires GNOME Weather and an active internet connection. | Its dependency shows that a panel extension may rely on another application and network retrieval instead of being a self-contained data source. |
Project documentation for weather extensions commonly states that forecast data is fetched from external providers and allows provider configuration. That establishes third-party involvement, but not identical behavior across versions or installations.
How extension code can affect system performance
The shell-process mechanism
GNOME’s official safety guidance states: The code in a GNOME Shell extension becomes part of the core operating system.
A GNOME Extensions review page likewise describes extension JavaScript executing in the shell process. This architecture creates a direct route to user-visible effects: inefficient code, excessive timers, repeated network work, memory leaks, or continuous animation can compete with the shell for resources or make the interface less responsive. GNOME also warns that extensions can cause system misbehavior or crashes.

This is a mechanism, not proof that a particular weather extension is slow. A small extension that updates infrequently may have little observable effect, while another with frequent polling, elaborate animation, or a compatibility bug may behave differently on the same machine.

Refresh and animation choices
Weather data changes slowly compared with a desktop frame rate. An extension that refreshes far more often than necessary creates additional network and parsing work. Animated panels can add ongoing rendering work; Weatherglass documents roughly 20 frames per second and says its animations pause when unmapped. That documentation does not reveal actual CPU use, battery drain, or how the extension compares with a static display.
What is not established
No controlled CPU, memory, battery, or responsiveness comparison among named weather-extension versions is available in the material supporting this article. There is therefore no defensible generic percentage, megabyte figure, battery estimate, or claim that users will normally notice a slowdown. Any numerical answer would need to identify the extension and version, GNOME Shell release, hardware, provider, location mode, refresh interval, and idle-versus-active test conditions.
Privacy checks to perform before enabling an extension
- Confirm compatibility. Record your GNOME Shell release and compare it with the extension listing’s supported releases. An extension built for a different shell version can misbehave and may not receive timely fixes.
- Read the current listing and project page. Look for the default location mode, provider names, geocoding services, update behavior, analytics, accounts, and disk-cache statements.
- Open Preferences before turning on automatic location. Identify options labeled “My Location,” “Detect location automatically,” “city search,” “manual coordinates,” GeoClue, or IP location.
- Choose the least revealing location method that still works. A manually selected city is usually preferable when avoiding IP-based location inference matters to you.
- Check every provider. Weather, geocoding, and fallback services may be different companies. A provider list is more informative than the extension’s name.
- Inspect maintenance signals. Note the latest release, supported shell versions, issue activity, and whether the listing is retired. A review badge is useful context, not a security guarantee.
GNOME Extensions says it reviews submissions for malicious behavior, while also warning that extensions can still cause crashes or other misbehavior. Treat review as one check among several, not proof that an extension is harmless or private.
A privacy-conscious setup workflow
1. Start with a known baseline
Write down the GNOME Shell version, distribution release, extension name, and extension version. This makes later troubleshooting meaningful and prevents you from assuming that documentation for one release applies to another.

2. Set a fixed location first
In the extension’s Preferences or Settings panel, select a city or enter coordinates instead of enabling automatic detection. If the extension offers a separate geocoding provider, note it before saving.
3. Review network-related options
Disable optional analytics, accounts, or telemetry when the extension provides such switches. Check whether weather data is cached on disk and whether the cache can be cleared. If the documentation is silent, do not infer that no data is retained.
4. Use conservative update behavior
If a refresh interval is configurable, choose a reasonable interval rather than the shortest available value. Disable animated effects when an option exists and you do not need them.

After saving, confirm that the displayed city is correct and that the extension does not unexpectedly switch back to automatic location. For stronger assurance, inspect the extension’s source or observe outbound requests with a network-monitoring tool you already trust; the listing alone cannot prove implementation.

Diagnosing a privacy concern
The extension keeps asking for automatic location
Reopen Preferences and look for a separate fallback setting. Some designs use manual selection until a lookup fails, then fall back to IP geolocation. If you cannot disable that behavior, choose another compatible extension or leave the extension disabled.
A provider appears that was not expected
Check whether the unexpected domain belongs to geocoding, a fallback service, or an update checker rather than the forecast API. Compare the observed request with the current documentation and source. If the behavior is unexplained, do not assume that a privacy statement covers it.
The extension is retired or no longer compatible
Remove or disable it and evaluate a maintained alternative against the same checklist. A replacement with a similar name can have different providers, defaults, and retention practices.

Diagnosing a performance concern
- Reproduce the symptom. Note whether the problem occurs during panel opening, while the weather display is visible, during refresh, or only after the desktop has been running for a long time.
- Toggle the extension off. Use GNOME’s Extensions application or the installed extension manager, then observe whether the symptom disappears. This is an isolation test, not a benchmark.
- Reduce optional work. Turn off animation, notifications, and unusually frequent refreshes if the extension exposes those controls.
- Check version pairing. A shell-extension mismatch can produce instability unrelated to the weather request itself. Install only a release that lists your GNOME Shell version as supported.
- Keep it disabled if instability remains. GNOME’s architecture means a faulty extension can affect the shell; removing it is a reasonable recovery step when symptoms persist.
How to measure “how much” without misleading yourself
If you need a quantitative answer for your own computer, use a repeatable comparison rather than a universal estimate. Record:
- the exact extension and version;
- the GNOME Shell and distribution versions;
- hardware, power state, and display configuration;
- location method and provider selection;
- refresh interval and animation settings;
- idle behavior and active panel use; and
- the same observations with the extension disabled.
Repeat each condition long enough to distinguish a transient startup effect from a sustained one. Compare CPU, memory, battery behavior, and shell responsiveness using the same workload. Report the conditions with any result; without them, a number cannot be generalized to other extensions or systems.
How to choose among compatible extensions
| Decision factor | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Shell compatibility | Does the current release explicitly support your GNOME Shell version? | Incompatibility can cause crashes or misleading performance symptoms. |
| Location default | Is automatic detection enabled initially? Can you select a city or coordinates? | Defaults determine whether an IP or system-location lookup occurs before you change settings. |
| Providers | Which weather, geocoding, and fallback services receive requests? | Each service may receive different location-related data. |
| Retention and analytics | Does the author document accounts, telemetry, or disk caching? | Silence is not evidence of no collection; it identifies an area requiring source or network verification. |
| Update and visual workload | How often does it refresh? Are animation and notifications optional? | These settings provide the clearest implementation-level route to resource use. |
| Maintenance and review | Is the project maintained, and has it passed the GNOME Extensions review process? | Review and maintenance improve confidence but do not guarantee security, privacy, or stability. |
Bottom line for GNOME users
GNOME Shell weather extensions can affect privacy because weather and location requests may leave the computer, sometimes involving public-IP geolocation, GeoClue, geocoding, and multiple providers. They can affect performance because their code runs in the shell process, where inefficient refreshes or animation can influence responsiveness. The extent is extension-specific, and no reliable generic performance figure exists. Select a maintained release compatible with your shell, prefer a manual city when you want to avoid IP-based location inference, review every provider and data-policy statement, and disable the extension if it causes instability.
