Short answer: it depends on which Gemini feature you call an automation. Gemini scheduled actions prepare recurring chat responses in the background and can notify you while an Android phone is locked, subject to notification settings. Gemini Spark schedules are separate workflows that Google explicitly warns may run while you are offline. Requests you make to Gemini from a locked Android phone work only for supported tasks, and sensitive personal information can still require an unlock. Google has not explicitly confirmed that every chat-based scheduled action executes when the phone itself has no internet connection.
“Gemini automation” can mean three different features
Google uses related names for capabilities that behave differently. Treating them as one system leads to incorrect expectations about a locked screen or an offline handset.

Scheduled actions in Gemini chats
Scheduled actions are recurring prompts that run daily, weekly or monthly. Examples include asking Gemini to prepare a regular briefing or digest. Gemini prepares the response in the background and sends a notification in the mobile app when it is ready. This is a cloud-oriented recurring prompt feature, not a general Android task scheduler.

Spark schedules belong to Gemini Spark, Google’s task and workflow feature. A Spark schedule can be triggered by a time or a condition and may perform actions in a workflow. Google’s Spark documentation explicitly warns that a schedule can run while you are offline, so you might not be able to stop an unintended action.

On-demand assistance from the lock screen
This is not a scheduled automation. You invoke Gemini by touch or with “Hey Google” while the Android phone or tablet is locked. Gemini can handle selected requests without unlocking, but requests involving personal content can be held until you authenticate.
What works while the phone is locked or offline?

How scheduled actions prepare and deliver responses
Google says Gemini prepares scheduled-action content in the background so it is ready by the delivery time. Without a Google AI plan, preparation may happen up to several hours before delivery. With a Google AI plan, Google says preparation occurs within the hour before delivery. This timing matters for information that changes quickly: a stock price, live score or breaking-news detail can be stale by the time the notification arrives because the response may have been prepared earlier.
The mobile app notification is the handoff you see. Google phrases lock-screen behavior conditionally: the notification may appear while the device is locked, depending on your settings. A visible notification therefore proves only that Android surfaced a prepared result; it does not prove that the phone performed the computation locally or that the process would continue without network access.
Requirements and setup for a scheduled action
Availability and account eligibility are part of the feature. Google says scheduled actions are gradually rolling out to personal accounts, so the control may not be present for everyone. The documented requirements are:

- Sign in to Gemini with a personal Google Account or a qualifying work or school Google Workspace account.
- Turn on Keep Activity. Scheduled actions are not available when that activity setting is disabled.
- Use a connected service when the prompt depends on another app, such as a Google Workspace service.
- Stay within the limit of 10 active scheduled actions.
To check or create one in the Android Gemini app, open Gemini, tap your profile picture, choose Scheduled actions, then create a prompt and select a daily, weekly or monthly recurrence. If the prompt needs another app, connect that service when Gemini requests it. Review the generated schedule and its destination before saving.
For delivery, check Android’s notification controls. On many current Android versions the route is Settings → Notifications → App notifications → Gemini; wording can differ by manufacturer and Android release. Allow notifications and, if you want the result visible without unlocking, allow lock-screen notifications in the system’s lock-screen notification settings. These controls determine whether you see the prepared response, not whether Gemini’s background preparation is guaranteed to run offline.
Does a scheduled action run with no internet connection?
The safest answer is that Google’s scheduled-actions help does not settle that question. It documents background preparation and a notification that can appear on a locked device, but it does not explicitly promise execution when the phone has no active connection at the scheduled time. Do not describe chat scheduled actions as guaranteed offline automations, and do not claim that the phone must be unlocked.

For content that must reflect the latest information, schedule enough connectivity for Gemini to prepare and deliver the response, then verify the timestamp in the app.

Why Gemini Spark is a different offline case
Spark schedules are attached to tasks and workflows rather than recurring prompts in a Gemini chat. They can use a time trigger or a condition and may carry out an action without waiting for you to open the app.
Google’s safety warning is explicit: “If a schedule runs when you’re offline, you may not be able to stop Gemini from completing an unintended action.” That sentence establishes that an eligible Spark schedule can run while its user is offline. It does not establish the same behavior for every chat scheduled action, Android setting, or lock-screen request.
Before enabling a Spark schedule
- Read the trigger in plain language: confirm the time zone, recurrence and any condition that can fire it.
- List every action in the workflow, including messages, edits, external-service changes or other effects.
- Ask what happens if the phone loses service, you are asleep or a condition changes while you cannot intervene.
- Use a low-consequence test when possible, then inspect the result and execution history before attaching an important account or irreversible action.
The offline warning makes review especially important. If an action could send information, modify data or create a cost, configure it so an unintended run is reversible or requires a later confirmation whenever the workflow offers that choice.

Google says Gemini can be opened by touch or “Hey Google” on most Android phone and tablet lock screens when the lock-screen setting is enabled. Supported examples include general questions, alarms and timers, media control, selected device settings and smart-home control. Calls or messages can be available with the relevant opt-in, and some reminders, events, notes and lists are supported.

Lock-screen access is deliberately narrower for private data. A request to read a calendar is an example Google gives of a personal-content task that may require unlocking. The same principle can apply to other information tied to your account, contacts or private apps. Seeing the Gemini interface on the lock screen does not mean every request is authorized there.
Enable and check lock-screen access
- Open the Gemini Android app and open its profile or settings area.
- Enable the setting labeled Gemini on lock screen if it is available on your device.
- Review Android microphone, notification and assistant permissions, plus any separate permission requested for calls, messages, smart-home devices or another connected service.
- Lock the phone and test a harmless request such as setting a timer. Then test a personal-data request only when you are prepared to unlock.
Menus and labels can vary by Android version, device maker and account type. If the lock-screen option is missing, the feature may not have reached that account or device, or another assistant setting may control access.

Gemini’s Device assistance feature is available in the Android Gemini mobile app. It focuses on controlling the handset and apps, with supported examples including alarms, timers and selected device settings. Some actions depend on granting permissions or making the Google app the default digital assistant.

Device assistance can explain why a simple timer works when a richer question does not: the former may be a local or assistant-level control, while a request that needs Gemini’s online model, account data or a connected service needs network access and possibly an unlock. Google’s Device assistance page does not redefine cloud-based Gemini work as offline processing.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The scheduled result exists, but no lock-screen notification appears
- Open Android notification settings and confirm Gemini notifications are allowed.
- Check the lock-screen notification privacy setting; some phones hide sensitive content even when notifications are enabled.
- Open Gemini and inspect Profile → Scheduled actions to verify that the action is active rather than paused, failed or deleted.
- If the account recently received the feature, allow for gradual rollout differences between personal and Workspace accounts.
The action used to work but now fails
- Confirm Keep Activity is still on.
- Check whether a connected Google Workspace or other app service was disconnected or lost permission.
- Count active schedules; Google documents a maximum of 10.
- Review the prompt for information that changes rapidly and compare the preparation time with the delivery time.
Gemini answers on the lock screen but refuses a request
Try unlocking the phone. Requests involving personal content can require authentication even when general questions and device controls remain available. Also check whether calls, messages, microphone access or the requested smart-home service has been explicitly enabled.
A Spark workflow ran while the phone was offline
Treat that as expected behavior under Google’s warning, not as evidence that every Gemini automation is offline-capable. Inspect the workflow’s trigger and actions, undo any unintended reversible change, and narrow or disable the schedule before reconnecting it to consequential services.
Privacy and reliability decisions
Lock-screen convenience trades some visibility for less authentication. Notifications can reveal that a Gemini response is ready, and Android’s privacy controls determine whether text is shown on the lock screen or hidden until unlock. For personal digests, use the more private notification setting if someone else could see the handset.

For reliability, distinguish a prepared response from a live action. A scheduled chat response may be prepared before delivery and can become stale. A Spark workflow may execute while you are offline and may be difficult to stop. An on-demand lock-screen request depends on the permissions, account data and connectivity required by that specific request. Choose the feature whose failure mode you can tolerate rather than assuming the word “automation” guarantees the same behavior everywhere.
A practical decision guide
- You want a recurring briefing: use Gemini scheduled actions, enable Keep Activity, connect required apps and allow notifications. Treat the result as prepared content, not a live data feed.
- You want a workflow that changes something: use Spark only after reviewing its triggers, consequences and offline behavior. Google warns that it may run while you are offline.
- You need a quick answer or device control with the phone locked: enable Gemini on lock screen and test the exact request. Expect an unlock for private account content.
- You need an alarm, timer or selected setting: check Device assistance permissions and default-assistant requirements; do not infer that broader Gemini tasks will work without a connection.
The bottom line
Gemini automations do not have one universal locked-or-offline rule. Scheduled actions prepare recurring chat responses in the background and may notify you on a locked phone, but Google does not explicitly guarantee execution with the phone offline. Spark schedules are the exception with an explicit offline warning: they may run when you are offline, potentially before you can intervene. Lock-screen Gemini handles selected requests, while personal-content tasks can require authentication. Identify the feature first, then configure its account, activity, permissions, connectivity and notification requirements.
