Short answer: A VPN did not lower ping in Gizmodo’s 2026 Counter-Strike 2 comparison. Every one of the six services tested added latency to both the London and American game servers. The best London result was 57 ms through a VPN versus 42 ms without one; the American server measured 262 ms at best versus 241 ms without a VPN.
A gaming VPN can still be useful for masking your IP, addressing a suspected routing or throttling problem, reaching a particular region, or connecting consoles through a router. It is not a universal lag fix. Your game server’s geography, the route chosen by your ISP, VPN-server load, protocol, jitter and device setup matter more than a “gaming” label.

What the 2026 CS2 test actually measured
Gizmodo’s Florian Gray published its comparison on September 15, 2026. The team measured six VPN services inside Counter-Strike 2, not with a generic browser speed test. It used a fixed London community server and a fixed American server, connected each VPN to a matching location, and read latency from the game itself. That distinction matters: a speed-test server can be geographically or operationally different from the server your game uses.
The figures below are Gizmodo’s observations under its particular setup. They are not guarantees for another country, ISP, Wi-Fi network, game, protocol or time of day.

London Counter-Strike 2 server
| Connection | Ping reported by Gizmodo | Change from 42 ms baseline |
|---|---|---|
| No VPN | 42 ms | Baseline |
| ExpressVPN | 57 ms | +15 ms |
| NordVPN | 58 ms | +16 ms |
| CyberGhost | 60 ms | +18 ms |
| Proton VPN | 62 ms | +20 ms |
| Private Internet Access | 66 ms | +24 ms |
| Sixth tested service (name omitted) | 67 ms | +25 ms |
ExpressVPN had the lowest measured London latency at 57 ms, but it was still 15 ms slower than the unprotected connection. The sixth service had the highest result in this particular run at 67 ms.
American Counter-Strike 2 server
| Connection | Ping reported by Gizmodo | Change from 241 ms baseline |
|---|---|---|
| No VPN | 241 ms | Baseline |
| NordVPN | 262 ms | +21 ms |
| CyberGhost | 264 ms | +23 ms |
| Proton VPN | 268 ms | +27 ms |
| ExpressVPN | 274 ms | +33 ms |
| Private Internet Access | 284 ms | +43 ms |
| Sixth tested service (name omitted) | 285 ms | +44 ms |
The American server was already 241 ms away without a VPN. That large baseline shows why physical and network distance usually dominates the result. Even the fastest VPN path in this test, 262 ms, remained far too slow for most competitive play.

Gizmodo also measured latency to UK, US and Japan locations from a 190.36 Mbps Windows 11 Ethernet connection in Europe. The stated baseline was 10 ms. These are not Counter-Strike 2 server readings, so they should not be merged with the in-game table.
| Service | UK | US | Japan |
|---|---|---|---|
| CyberGhost | 39 ms | 121 ms | 256 ms |
| NordVPN | 41 ms | 134 ms | 215 ms |
| ExpressVPN | 42 ms | 129 ms | 223 ms |
| Proton VPN | 45 ms | 135 ms | 218 ms |
| Private Internet Access | 48 ms | 150 ms | 270 ms |
| Sixth tested service (name omitted) | 51 ms | 144 ms | 241 ms |
CyberGhost was lowest for the UK location in this measurement, while NordVPN was lowest for Japan. Those outcomes illustrate why there is no single global winner: the best route depends on where you are and where the game server is.

Did a gaming-labeled server help?
Gizmodo connected to a gaming-labeled CyberGhost server and a standard server in the same city, one immediately after the other. Both returned 30 ms. In that comparison, the label itself produced no measurable improvement. A specialized label can describe routing, prioritization or server selection, but only a repeatable in-game measurement tells you whether it helps your connection.
Does a VPN lower ping for gaming?
Usually, no. A VPN encrypts your traffic, sends it to a VPN endpoint, and then forwards it to the game server. That extra encrypted hop can add processing and distance. In Gizmodo’s test, all six services increased ping on both game servers.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A VPN could reduce latency in an unusual case where your normal ISP route is congested, poorly peered or taking an indirect path. A nearby VPN endpoint with a better route may then outperform the default path. That is a routing exception, not a property of VPNs in general. You must compare the same game server, at similar times, with and without the VPN.
Latency is only one part of playability. Jitter (variation between packets), packet loss, brief congestion and server tick behavior can cause stutter even when an average ping number looks acceptable. A provider that posts high download speeds is not automatically the one with the most stable game connection.

Nearby competitive PC gaming
For a player whose game server is nearby, start with the shortest physical route and the lowest measured in-game ping. ExpressVPN recorded Gizmodo’s lowest London CS2 result at 57 ms and was described as strongest under load in that session. Its Lightway protocol is intended for quick, stable connections. It does not offer port forwarding, which can matter for hosting or peer-to-peer games.
Distant regions
NordVPN was Gizmodo’s distant-server recommendation: 262 ms on the American CS2 server and 215 ms to Japan in the three-region test. The article highlights NordLynx, Smart DNS, a kill switch and Meshnet for games that support LAN-style connections. Those numbers still represent one European test setup; a player in North America or Asia could see a different order.
Free access and privacy emphasis
Proton VPN was presented as the free-plan and privacy choice in Gizmodo’s comparison. The same source notes port forwarding as a relevant feature. Free capacity can be more crowded and may offer fewer locations, so test the actual game route rather than assuming the free plan will match paid performance.
Hosted servers and incoming connections
Private Internet Access was recommended by Gizmodo for hosted game servers because of port forwarding, with the qualification that port forwarding is unavailable on its US servers. Port forwarding can help certain hosting or peer-to-peer arrangements, but it does not lower ordinary match latency by itself.
Lower idle latency in a UK measurement
CyberGhost was labeled the lowest idle-ping option in Gizmodo’s UK measurement and had 39 ms in that publisher’s three-region table. A longer refund window was also highlighted. Treat both the latency and refund details as source-specific and subject to change.

Household and multi-device use
When several people play, stream or work at once, prioritize simultaneous-device limits, router support, stable performance under load and easy account management. A VPN that is fast on a single wired computer can behave differently when a whole household shares one tunnel. Check whether your chosen plan supports the number and types of devices you actually use.
What to compare besides a headline ping
- Game-server geography: Choose an endpoint near the game’s actual region. Connecting to a VPN in your own city can still be slower if the game server is elsewhere.
- Jitter and packet loss: Look for consistent in-game readings over several matches, not one favorable sample.
- Load behavior: Repeat the test while another device streams or downloads. Gizmodo specifically described one provider as strongest under load, but that observation came from its own session.
- Protocol: Modern protocols can reconnect quickly, but the fastest option depends on your operating system, router and network. Compare stability, not just a protocol name.
- Port forwarding: Useful for some hosted or peer-to-peer games; it is separate from ordinary ping and may be restricted to particular countries or servers.
- LAN features: Mesh-style networking can help games that require players to appear on one local network. Confirm that the game supports that arrangement.
- Kill switch: Prevents traffic from reverting to the normal connection if the VPN drops, but test it before relying on it during a match.
- Smart DNS: Can help devices that cannot run a VPN application, but it does not provide the same encrypted tunnel as a full VPN.
- Device compatibility: Check native support for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, plus the setup method for consoles and routers.
- Commercial terms: Compare the current subscription price, renewal price, billing period, device allowance and refund conditions. These details change and are not established by the latency tables.
How to use a VPN with a console
PlayStation and Xbox do not provide native VPN applications, according to Security.org. Console players generally choose one of three approaches:
- Virtual router: Run the VPN on a compatible Windows computer and share that connection over Wi-Fi or Ethernet to the console. This is inexpensive but leaves the computer running and can add setup complexity.
- VPN-capable router: Install the VPN configuration on router hardware so every connected device uses the tunnel. This is convenient for a household, but router performance, firmware support and configuration quality affect latency.
- Smart DNS: Enter the provider’s DNS details on the console when the goal is location handling rather than full encryption. Smart DNS does not mask traffic in the same way as a VPN tunnel.
After setup, verify the console’s NAT status, matchmaking region, download behavior and in-game ping. If the VPN causes strict NAT, disconnects or higher jitter, the router configuration may be unsuitable even if browsing works.
A repeatable way to test your own connection
- Choose the actual game and server region you care about. Do not substitute a nearby speed-test server.
- Record several in-game matches with no VPN. Note average ping, visible jitter, packet loss and disconnects.
- Connect to the nearest VPN endpoint, then record the same metrics under similar time and household-load conditions.
- Try one or two alternate endpoints in the same country. The nearest city is not always the best peering route.
- Repeat during your usual evening play period. A single daytime result can hide congestion.
- Compare stability and matchmaking behavior, not only the lowest number. Keep the VPN only if it solves a specific problem without making play less reliable.
Keep a simple record of date, game server, VPN endpoint, protocol, wired or wireless connection and observed ping. That context prevents a result from being mistaken for a universal provider ranking.

VPN or game accelerator?
A VPN is a general encrypted tunnel with privacy and location features. A game accelerator is designed primarily to select or combine routes for particular games and regions. Either can improve a bad route in an individual case, and either can add delay when its chosen path is longer or congested.
Best Value
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
Choose a VPN when IP masking, encrypted traffic, router-wide coverage or a specific port-forwarding/LAN feature matters. Consider an accelerator only when it supports your exact game and region and gives you a way to measure its route against your normal connection. Neither category can guarantee lower ping, immunity from attacks or uninterrupted matches.
Security, regional access and terms-of-service limits
Security.org describes a VPN as encrypting traffic and routing it through a server so the player’s direct IP is masked. That can reduce direct exposure to targeted attacks, but it is not a promise that every distributed attack or service disruption will be prevented. Keep game accounts protected with unique passwords and multi-factor authentication as well.
Some players use a VPN to address suspected ISP throttling or to reach a different regional service. Gizmodo cautions that changing regional store access or similar settings may conflict with a game or platform’s terms. Check the current rules before switching regions; a VPN does not override them.

Independent comparisons use different games, locations, hardware, protocols and scoring systems. Security.org says it tested more than 60 VPN services across 1,400 testing hours with eight experts. Top10VPN reports 59 services and more than 30,000 testing hours, with its page marked last tested September 2026. Those totals describe different methodologies and cannot be combined into one leaderboard.
Security.org assigns category picks for professional gamers and streamers, PC, free, mobile, console and Mac use. Top10VPN names ExpressVPN its overall pick and NordVPN its paid low-ping runner-up. Gizmodo’s CS2 measurements produce a different emphasis. The responsible way to cite any result is to include the publisher, date, game, server region and test method.
Who should use a gaming VPN?
- Use one if you need IP masking for a specific threat model, a router-wide encrypted connection, a particular regional route or a documented ISP-routing problem.
- Test first if your only goal is lower ping. Gizmodo’s six-service CS2 test found the opposite for every service.
- Skip it for a competitive match when it raises jitter, packet loss or ping and provides no compensating feature.
- Use a router or Smart DNS approach only after checking console compatibility, NAT behavior and the game’s rules.
Verdict
There is no evidence here for a universal “best gaming VPN” or a zero-lag promise. In Gizmodo’s September 2026 CS2 measurements, the unprotected connection was fastest on both tested servers: 42 ms versus 57–67 ms in London and 241 ms versus 262–285 ms in America. Pick a provider only for a defined use case—such as a distant route, privacy, port forwarding, LAN connectivity or console coverage—and validate it on your own game server before committing to a long plan.
For broader context, consult the Security.org gaming VPN methodology, Top10VPN’s September 2026 comparison and TechRadar’s gaming VPN overview. Their differing results are a reminder to match the test to your game, region and hardware.
