Usually not if “free” means a timed trial or free-play event. Those offers grant temporary permission to launch the game, and the permission can end on the stated date. A separate “free to keep” promotion adds a lasting entitlement to the account when you claim it. Bethesda’s own support instructions illustrate both the distinction and its limits: an Elder Scrolls Online free-play event required a full purchase after the event, while Fallout 76 trial progress could carry over if the player later bought the game.
Your answer therefore depends on the exact offer, the platform account that claimed it and whether the store recorded a permanent entitlement. Installing the game, adding an event listing to a library or retaining save files does not, by itself, prove that you own a continuing license.

“Free” can describe four different kinds of access
Before assuming a game will remain playable, identify what the store actually offered. Bethesda games can appear in several promotion formats, and each creates a different account status.
Timed free-play event or free trial
A free weekend, trial week or other event temporarily unlocks the full game. The store normally specifies an end date. When that date passes, the launch entitlement can be removed unless you purchase the game or otherwise qualify through a subscription. A trial download may remain on your drive, but the license check can prevent you from starting it.

Free-to-keep giveaway
A free-to-keep promotion has a claim window, but the entitlement is intended to remain after that window closes. You generally must complete the claim on the correct platform account. The strongest evidence is a zero-price transaction or an entry in the account’s purchase or entitlement history. Merely seeing a game advertised as free, or downloading a trial client, is not equivalent.
Subscription access
A game included with a subscription is playable only while the subscription and the catalog inclusion remain active. It may look like a free download, yet the right to launch is tied to the subscription rather than permanently attached to your library. Canceling the subscription can therefore produce the same practical result as an expired trial.
Transfer of an already-owned game
A platform migration is different again. If you bought a title on Bethesda.net before the launcher was retired, Bethesda said eligible library titles could be transferred to Steam and that purchases would carry over. That policy protects an existing purchase; it does not convert a temporary event into permanent ownership.

How the offer types compare
| Offer shown by the store | What your account receives | What happens when the offer ends | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free weekend, free-play event or trial | Time-limited launch permission | Access can stop; a full purchase may be required | Event end date and purchase requirement |
| Free-to-keep claim | Permanent entitlement after a successful claim | Game should remain available on that account, subject to platform rules | Completed claim and transaction/entitlement record |
| Subscription catalog | Access linked to an active subscription | Access ends when the subscription or catalog eligibility ends | Subscription status and catalog terms |
| Bethesda.net-to-Steam migration | Transfer of an eligible previously owned title | Ownership record can transfer even though the old launcher stops running games | Correct Steam account and migration status |
Bethesda’s own examples show why the wording matters
The Elder Scrolls Online free-play event
Bethesda Support’s article “How do I join The Elder Scrolls Online Free Play Event?” describes an event that ran from August 5 through August 12, 2025. Its direct instruction is: “Once the event is over, you will no longer be able to access the game without a full purchase.” That is a clear example of event access ending; it is not a current promotion calendar and does not establish the terms of every future Bethesda offer.
If you participated in that event, the fact that the game was installed, appeared in a launcher or had a shortcut on your device would not change the stated requirement for a full purchase after August 12. The applicable store account and the event’s own terms control.
Fallout 76 Free Trial Week
Bethesda’s “How can I participate in the Fallout 76 Free to Play event?” instructions say the event includes the full game during the trial. They also state: “If you decide you want to purchase the full game after the Free Trial Week has ended, all of your save data will carry over.”

That sentence promises continuity of progress after a purchase. It does not say the trial itself becomes a permanent license. Treat saved progress and launch permission as separate account properties: your character data may be retained while the game remains locked until you buy it.

Players often use “in my library” to mean three different things:
- A catalog listing: the store can display a game you are eligible to try or buy.
- An installed file: the game data remains on your drive, even when the license has expired.
- A permanent entitlement: the account can launch the game without the event, subscription or trial continuing.
Only the third item answers whether you can keep playing. A listing can disappear because a filter is hiding it, or because an event product was removed. An installed copy can remain visible but fail an entitlement check. Conversely, a permanent entitlement can remain recorded even if the game is uninstalled.

How to identify what you claimed
Use this process before buying the game again or contacting support.
- Read the original offer language. Look for “free weekend,” “free trial,” “free play event,” “free to keep,” “claim permanently,” “subscription” or a specific end date. A timed phrase indicates temporary access; a permanent-claim phrase indicates a different entitlement.
- Check the platform account. Confirm the signed-in Steam, console or Bethesda account is the one used when you claimed the offer. A second account can make a valid entitlement appear missing.
- Review transaction or entitlement history. A completed zero-price purchase, receipt or permanent license entry is stronger evidence than a download button. If the history shows only a trial or event entry, do not assume it will survive the end date.
- Check the offer’s end date and purchase condition. Bethesda’s ESO example explicitly required a full purchase after the event. Other promotions can have different rules, so use the terms attached to your specific listing.
- Separate save status from access status. If the game offers cloud saves or retained characters, that information tells you about progress, not whether you can launch without purchasing. Fallout 76’s documented save carryover is an example of this distinction.
- Record the platform and edition. A PC entitlement may not unlock a console edition, and a migration from Bethesda.net to Steam concerns eligible owned titles rather than every temporary promotion.
If the game is missing after the event
First check account and filters
On the platform where you claimed the offer, sign out and back in with the original account. Then clear library filters that hide uninstalled, hidden or previously owned titles. Bethesda’s migration troubleshooting specifically recommends confirming the correct Steam account and checking filters before escalating.
Look for a transaction, not just a download
Search the platform’s purchase or account history for the game. If there is no permanent transaction and the original listing was a trial or event, the disappearance may be the expected end of access rather than a technical failure.
Best Value
Use the platform’s missing-game tools when ownership is documented
For a title that should have transferred, Bethesda directs users to verify the Steam account and use Steam Support’s missing-game lookup. Those instructions apply to migration and recorded ownership. They should not be treated as proof that every free event creates a transferable license.
Migration-specific case: a free title failed to appear
Bethesda’s migration guidance says that, for free games that did not transfer correctly, users should navigate to the Steam store and download the game. This is a recovery step for an eligible migration record, not a general method for extending an expired trial. If your account never had a permanent entitlement, downloading the store client will not create one.
What Bethesda’s launcher migration did—and did not—preserve
Bethesda announced that games owned on the Bethesda.net Launcher could be moved to Steam and that purchases would carry over. It also said players would retain access to their Bethesda.net library after May 11, 2022, even though games could no longer be played through that launcher. A separate support answer said that users who missed the migration period could still migrate their library after the launcher became inactive.

These statements concern the record of previously owned titles. They distinguish four things that are easy to conflate:
- Library record: an account history showing a title you own.
- Launcher access: whether a particular application can still start the game.
- Steam transfer: moving an eligible ownership record to another platform.
- Event access: a temporary permission that expires under the promotion’s terms.
Keeping a library record after a launcher shutdown does not mean the old launcher remains usable, and a migration policy does not make a free-play event permanent.
Common assumptions that lead to the wrong answer
- “I clicked Add to library, so I own it.” Some event pages use library language for a temporary product. Confirm the transaction or entitlement type.
- “The files are still installed, so I can keep playing.” License checks can block launch after the event.
- “My saves are present, so the trial became permanent.” Save retention and game ownership are independent; Bethesda documents save carryover for Fallout 76 after purchase.
- “Bethesda migrated libraries, so every free game should transfer.” The migration covered eligible previously owned titles. Temporary access is a separate category.
- “The game vanished, so Bethesda deleted my purchase.” An incorrect account or a library filter can hide a valid entitlement. Check those before assuming loss.
The practical rule
Assume a Bethesda free-play event or trial ends when its terms say it ends. Treat a game as yours to keep only when the offer explicitly says so and the claiming platform records a permanent entitlement on the account you use. If the offer is unclear, preserve your saves, note the end date and verify the transaction history before spending money or opening a support case.
