Do Four 2.5GbE Ports Make a Mini PC a Good Router?

Sometimes—but four 2.5GbE ports alone do not make a mini PC a good router. They provide useful physical connections for WAN, LAN and separate network segments, yet routing quality depends on the processor, memory, storage, Ethernet controller, operating-system drivers and the features you intend to run. OPNsense puts the decision in workload terms: “The hardware required for your local OPNsense will be determined by the intended minimum throughput and feature set.”

A four-port box can be an excellent compact firewall for a home, lab or small office when its exact components are supported and sized for the traffic. It can also disappoint if its ports use poor controllers, its CPU is overwhelmed by VPN or inspection, or its advertised 2.5Gbps links are mistaken for guaranteed routed throughput.

What four 2.5GbE ports actually give you

Four physical Ethernet ports let you build a router without adding a separate multi-port network card. A common layout is one port for the Internet connection and one for the internal LAN, leaving two ports for a second LAN, a guest network, a storage network, a lab segment or an additional WAN. You can also connect a managed switch and carry multiple VLANs over one port.

That flexibility is different from switching capacity. A port count does not prove that the mini PC contains a hardware switch, can route four links at their maximum line rate simultaneously, or has enough CPU time for firewall inspection, VPN encryption and logging at the same time. In many installations, two interfaces are sufficient; extra ports are valuable when you want physical separation, link redundancy or simpler cabling.

Port speed is a link rate, not a routing result

“2.5GbE” describes the negotiated Ethernet link between the mini PC and its peer. Real routed throughput is affected by packet size, interrupt handling, firewall rules, NAT, queueing, storage activity and the operating-system driver. A device may negotiate 2.5Gbps on every connector yet deliver much less when traffic passes through encrypted VPN tunnels or threat-protection engines.

Four interfaces versus VLANs

Separate ports can make a network easier to understand and troubleshoot, but VLANs can create several logical networks over one physical link when your switch supports them. Choose four ports for a concrete physical requirement—not because a larger number automatically improves performance.

OPNsense hardware requirements and what they mean

OPNsense supports the amd64/x86-64 processor architecture. Its current hardware-sizing guidance describes two baseline tiers:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
OPNsense tier CPU Memory Storage Planning throughput category
Reasonable specification 1GHz dual-core 4GB RAM 40GB SSD 151–350Mbps with all features and substantial users/networks
Recommended specification 1.5GHz multi-core 8GB RAM 120GB SSD 350–750+Mbps with all features and substantial-plus users/networks

These are planning categories from the OPNsense hardware sizing and setup guide, accessed October 12, 2026. They are not a benchmark for every mini PC and do not promise that a system with four 2.5GbE ports will route 2.5Gbps. OPNsense says the recommended tier fits most use cases, while the actual requirement depends on your minimum throughput and feature set.

Why the feature list changes sizing

Basic NAT and stateful firewalling are lighter workloads than deep inspection or high-volume services. OPNsense specifically identifies a caching proxy and a large captive portal as examples that can change hardware needs. Squid caching relies heavily on CPU work and disk-cache writes. A captive portal serving hundreds of simultaneous users needs additional CPU capacity.

State tracking also consumes memory. OPNsense estimates about 1kB of RAM per state-table entry; an average 1,000-entry table is therefore about 1MB. Busy networks, many clients, long-lived connections and extensive logging can make memory headroom more important than the port count.

How to evaluate a four-port mini PC before buying

  1. Define the traffic you must carry. Record the Internet service speed, expected east-west traffic between internal networks, number of users and whether traffic will be inspected or encrypted. A gigabit Internet line with ordinary NAT has a different requirement from multi-gigabit service with simultaneous VPN and intrusion prevention.
  2. Identify the exact processor. Check the CPU model, core count, generation and cooling design rather than relying on a generic “firewall appliance” label. Compare it with the OPNsense reasonable and recommended baselines, then leave headroom for the features you will enable.
  3. Verify RAM and upgradeability. Confirm installed memory, maximum capacity and whether a slot is accessible. Eight gigabytes aligns with OPNsense’s recommended tier; more may be useful for large state tables, additional services and extensive logs.
  4. Check the SSD and serviceability. OPNsense lists 40GB as a reasonable minimum and 120GB as recommended. An SSD with spare capacity is preferable when logs, reports, cache data or frequent updates will be written. Check whether the drive is replaceable and whether the vendor documents a recovery procedure.
  5. Find the Ethernet controller model. “Intel 2.5G LAN” is more useful than an unnamed controller, but the exact chipset and hardware revision still matter. OPNsense states that Intel chipset NICs deliver higher throughput at reduced CPU load and describes Intel LAN cards as reliable and fast. Treat that as project guidance, not a guarantee: verify the controller, driver support and behavior for the operating-system version you will install.
  6. Confirm all four ports are independent interfaces. A specification can describe four connectors while hiding an internal switch or a shared bus. Look for the controller details, interface names in the operating-system hardware list and documentation about VLAN and link behavior.
  7. Inspect cooling, power and support. Fanless designs are quiet but depend on adequate heatsinking and airflow. Ask for whole-appliance power figures rather than comparing processor thermal design power with wall consumption. Also consider firmware updates, warranty, replacement parts and the seller’s return terms.
  8. Check the exact configuration. Memory, SSD, NIC revision and wireless modules can vary by seller or production batch. A manufacturer PDF describes a product family; it does not prove that every marketplace listing contains the same parts or is currently in stock.

A real four-port example: the Partaker C12

The manufacturer’s Partaker N100 Mini PC C12 specification describes a fanless system with an Intel N100 processor, four Intel i225-V 2.5G LAN ports, one DDR4 SODIMM slot supporting up to 16GB, and stated storage options. It lists router, firewall, VPN and network-security applications.

This demonstrates that the category is available in a compact, low-power form. The document is a product specification, not an independent performance test. It does not establish the throughput of a particular retail configuration, current availability, driver behavior under your chosen operating system or power draw in your installation. Use workload-specific numbers, not a headline 2.5Gbps claim

The most useful comparison asks what the device can do for your workload. Test or obtain results for plain firewall/NAT routing, inter-VLAN traffic, encrypted VPN, and any threat-protection features separately. A single “maximum throughput” number is ambiguous unless the packet size, number of connections, enabled services and test direction are stated.

What to measure after installation

  • WAN-to-LAN and LAN-to-WAN throughput with ordinary NAT and your normal firewall rules.
  • Inter-VLAN throughput when clients on separate internal networks communicate.
  • IPsec or other VPN throughput with the encryption settings you will actually use.
  • CPU utilization, interrupt load, temperature and packet loss during sustained transfers.
  • Performance with logging, intrusion or threat-protection services enabled, not only with a clean baseline.

Run tests from wired clients capable of exceeding the target rate. Test one direction and both directions, repeat at different packet sizes, and watch for thermal throttling. Results from a different mini PC, operating-system release or NIC driver are not a substitute for testing your exact configuration.

How a turnkey appliance provides a useful reference

If you prefer a supported appliance over assembling a generic mini PC, Deciso’s official DEC600 2.5GbE Series page lists a model with four 2.5GbE ports, preinstalled OPNsense, 8GB RAM and a 256GB NVMe drive. The vendor reports:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
DEC697 specification Vendor-reported figure
Firewall port-to-port throughput 2.3Gbps
IPsec VPN throughput 600Mbps
Threat-protection throughput Approximately 540Mbps
Typical power consumption 13W

Those figures apply to the DEC697 and the measurement conditions described by its vendor. They are not a benchmark for an Intel N100 mini PC, a different NIC revision or a self-installed operating system. The comparison is still useful because it shows how sharply throughput can change by workload: the reported firewall result is close to the port aggregate, while IPsec and threat protection are substantially lower.

Choosing between a DIY mini PC and a turnkey box

Decision factor DIY four-port mini PC Turnkey OPNsense appliance
Hardware choice You select CPU, RAM, SSD and NICs, but must verify every component. Memory, storage, ports and software are specified as a tested product configuration by the vendor.
Flexibility Often easier to repurpose, upgrade or run another operating system. Usually optimized for the supplied firewall software and form factor.
Support You diagnose firmware, drivers, cooling and replacement parts yourself. One supplier is responsible for the appliance and may provide a clearer support path.
Performance evidence Independent results may be unavailable for the exact listing. Vendor figures can be easier to find, but still apply only to stated test conditions.
Physical networking Four ports can be arranged for your preferred WAN, LAN and segment layout. The listed appliance also provides four 2.5GbE ports, with OPNsense preinstalled.

OPNsense’s hardware guide points readers seeking turnkey equipment toward Deciso or listed project partners. The trade-off is straightforward: a DIY box can cost less or offer more upgrade freedom, while a turnkey appliance reduces compatibility and support uncertainty.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Buying by connector count

Four sockets do not compensate for an underpowered CPU, inadequate cooling or unsupported NIC drivers. Make the processor, controller and software compatibility checks before treating port count as a benefit.

Assuming “2.5G” means 2.5Gbps through a VPN

Encryption and inspection consume CPU and can reduce throughput considerably. Use workload-specific figures; the DEC697’s vendor-reported 600Mbps IPsec result illustrates why a line-rate claim cannot answer a VPN question.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ignoring drivers and revisions

Confirm that the exact Ethernet controller is recognized by your OPNsense release and that all ports remain stable under sustained load. If an interface disappears, negotiates at only 1Gbps or drops packets, update firmware and drivers where supported, test another cable and check for thermal or power issues before assuming the link is defective.

Underestimating storage writes

Long retention logs, proxy caching and frequent reporting can write continuously. Use an SSD with the capacity and endurance appropriate to those services, and monitor free space so a full filesystem does not become a networking outage.

Confusing physical separation with security by itself

A dedicated port does not automatically isolate users. Apply firewall rules, VLAN configuration and routing policy deliberately. Whether networks share a port through VLANs or use separate connectors, the security boundary is created by the configuration.

A practical installation and validation sequence

  1. Download the current OPNsense installer for amd64/x86-64 from the project and verify that the mini PC boots from the installation media.
  2. Record each physical port and its operating-system interface name. Label cables before assigning WAN and LAN so a reboot does not create an accidental topology change.
  3. Install to the SSD, set the administrative credentials, and apply updates before enabling optional services.
  4. Assign WAN, LAN and any additional interfaces. Configure VLANs only after the basic two-interface route works.
  5. Establish a baseline speed test with ordinary NAT and firewall rules. Save CPU, memory, temperature and packet-loss observations.
  6. Enable VPN, proxy, captive portal or threat-protection features one at a time. Repeat the same tests after each change and document the resulting throughput.
  7. Stress-test during the warmest expected operating conditions. Confirm that the fanless enclosure does not throttle and that every port remains linked at the intended rate.
  8. Back up the OPNsense configuration and keep a recovery image, spare SSD or replacement plan available before making the router the sole path to the Internet.

So, is a four-port 2.5GbE mini PC a good router?

It is a good candidate when you need several physical interfaces, the exact NICs have solid operating-system support, and the CPU, RAM, SSD and cooling match your traffic and enabled features. For ordinary home or small-office routing, a properly configured system can provide substantial flexibility in a very small enclosure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not automatically a good router because of the four-port label. OPNsense’s reasonable hardware tier is aimed at 151–350Mbps planning workloads, while its recommended tier covers 350–750+Mbps categories under the documentation’s stated assumptions; neither tier promises multi-gigabit performance. If your requirement is close to 2.5Gbps with VPN or threat protection, demand measurements for that exact workload or choose an appliance with published, comparable results.
