For a foldable phone’s inner display, keep the factory-fitted protective film in place unless the manufacturer’s instructions for your exact model say otherwise. Samsung, Motorola and Google warn that removing or improperly replacing this film can damage the display or affect how it works. The outer cover screen is separate: an additional protector there is an optional, model-specific accessory.
Why the inner screen’s factory film is different
The flexible inner display is built as a device-specific assembly, and its fitted film is designed to work with that folding design. It is not simply an ordinary flat-screen protector that can be peeled off and swapped for any film. Motorola says the Razr’s protector is tailored to its folding design, while Samsung describes the Galaxy foldable main-screen film as intended for foldable devices.
That is why removing, lifting or casually replacing the inner film carries risk. Google says not to remove or peel back the Pixel Fold’s pre-installed protector because doing so can cause damage. Samsung warns that unauthorized removal or unofficial film may damage the panel or cause touch irregularities. Motorola advises against third-party protectors for the Razr, warning they may affect sensitivity, cause the screen to become unresponsive or damage the display.
What to do if the inner film bubbles or lifts
If the factory film bubbles, warps or separates from the main screen, do not pull it off or press a replacement onto the display yourself. Follow the maker’s service guidance for the specific phone and region.

- Motorola Razr: Motorola says to contact an authorized service center if the protector bubbles, warps or separates, and warns against unauthorized replacement. Its advice is specific to Razr models and should not be treated as a universal warranty rule for other brands or markets. Motorola Razr hardware guidance.
- Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip: Samsung directs owners to a service center for replacement and warns that arbitrary removal or application can damage the panel or cause touch problems. Its guidance is regional and includes older model-specific material, so check the current local support page for your generation. How to protect the flexible display during everyday use
A fitted film does not make the inner screen immune to concentrated pressure or debris. Motorola advises against pressing hard or using sharp objects on the main screen. Before closing a foldable, check that there is no object between the screens or caught in the hinge; Google likewise warns against closing the Pixel Fold with particles on the display or in the hinge.
- Keep sharp objects and hard pressure away from the inner display.
- Check the display and hinge area for debris before folding the phone shut.
- Use the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning and service rather than lifting the film to remove something underneath it.
Does the outer cover screen need its own protector?
The outside cover screen is a different surface from the flexible inner display. The manufacturer warnings about removing or replacing factory film on the inner screen do not establish that every foldable needs an extra protector on the outside. If you want one, choose an accessory made for the exact phone generation and cover-screen dimensions, and confirm that it is intended for the exterior screen—not the folding display.
