Yes, they can. A foldable case may interrupt or slow wireless charging when it adds too much distance, contains cards or metal, or prevents the phone’s coil from sitting over the charger’s active area. Magnetic charging introduces a separate compatibility issue: the phone, case and magnetic accessory must support the same system.
“MagSafe” is not a universal synonym for Qi2. The reliable answer depends on your exact foldable model, case construction, magnetic standard and charger design.

Why a foldable case can affect wireless charging
Wireless charging transfers power across a short air gap between coils. One coil is inside the phone and another is in the charging pad or stand. A case does not need to block the signal completely to cause trouble; extra distance or a small alignment error can reduce the coupling between those coils enough to make charging intermittent, very slow or unavailable.

Added distance from a thick cover
Every case places another layer between the phone and pad. Flexible plastic or thin leather may have little practical effect, while a rigid, multilayer or reinforced cover can move the coils farther apart. Foldable cases can be more substantial because they protect a hinge, cover two phone halves and sometimes include a front flap or wallet section.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
There is no universal thickness limit for every foldable. Samsung’s numeric guidance applies specifically to its Galaxy Z Fold8: remove a third-party cover thicker than 5 mm before charging. That is a model-specific support instruction, not an industry-wide rule for all foldable phones.
The visual center may not be the coil center
On a slab phone, placing the center of the handset over the center of a pad is often a reasonable starting point. A foldable may put its charging coil noticeably above or below that visual midpoint. Samsung says the Galaxy Z Fold8’s coil is toward the bottom of the phone and instructs users to position the lower portion near the pad’s center. A case can make this harder by hiding the phone’s markings or adding a hinge guard that keeps the handset from lying flat.
Cards, metal and accessories are common troublemakers
Wallet cases and card slots deserve special attention. Samsung tells Galaxy Z Fold8 owners to remove cases holding credit cards before charging. Cards can increase the gap, and magnetic strips or embedded metal can interfere with the charging field or heat up. The same caution applies while testing any foldable: remove payment cards, metal plates, kickstands, ring grips and detachable wallets before concluding that the phone or pad is defective.

Pad coil layouts vary
Two chargers that both advertise Qi support may use different coil arrangements or have different active areas. Samsung notes that third-party wireless chargers have varying coil structures and recommends looking for the official Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) Qi certification mark. Certification helps establish that a charger follows the Qi program, but it does not remove the need to place your particular phone correctly.
What official guidance says about current foldables
The clearest instructions are model-specific. The following statements come from manufacturer documents rather than a universal test of all cases and chargers.
| Phone or guidance | What the manufacturer says | How to apply it |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 | Samsung’s Canada support page, updated September 4, 2026, places the charging coil toward the bottom. It says to remove a third-party cover thicker than 5 mm or a case holding credit cards, and recommends a WPC Qi certification mark on third-party chargers. | Align the lower part of the phone with the pad’s active area. Troubleshoot without a thick or wallet cover. This page specifically excludes Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra. |
| Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold | Google says magnetic attachment and wireless charging work best with no case or with a case designed for Qi2 wireless charging, such as a Google Pixelsnap case. | For magnetic accessories, use a Qi2-designed case or test with no case. Do not assume an ordinary thin case has the required magnetic arrangement. |
| Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 | The Galaxy Z Fold6 user manual warns that wireless charging may not work smoothly depending on the type of accessory or cover. | Treat the case and attached accessories as part of the charging setup. Remove them when diagnosing a problem. |
What these statements do—and do not—establish
They establish that cases and accessories can affect charging on named models and that alignment matters. They do not establish a failure rate, an average case thickness, a universal distance limit or a percentage of foldable owners who experience interference. No such prevalence statistic is supplied in the official material cited here.

How to troubleshoot a foldable that will not charge through its case
Use a controlled sequence so you change one variable at a time. The goal is to determine whether the problem is the phone, the case, the accessory or the charger position.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Identify the exact phone. Check the model name and regional edition, then read that manufacturer’s wireless-charging and case guidance. Instructions for one generation do not automatically apply to another.
- Strip the setup to essentials. Remove the case, card wallet, magnetic plate, grip, kickstand and any metal insert. Leave only the phone and the charger. If charging starts in this configuration, an accessory or the case is implicated.
- Use the correct phone orientation. Place the phone’s charging-coil area over the pad’s active center. For a Galaxy Z Fold8, start with the lower portion of the phone near the center rather than centering the entire handset by eye.
- Check the charger. Confirm that it is an appropriate Qi charger for the phone and, for a third-party unit, look for the WPC Qi certification mark recommended by Samsung. A certified pad can still have a layout that requires careful placement.
- Test the case by itself. Refit the empty case with no cards or attachments. If charging now fails, the case’s thickness, hinge structure or alignment is the likely variable. If it works, add cards and accessories one at a time to find the trigger.
- Try a second known-compatible pad. Different coil layouts can produce different results. Keep the phone and case position constant while changing only the charger.
- Watch for heat and repeated disconnects. Stop testing if the phone or accessory becomes unusually hot. Reposition the phone and remove the case before trying again; persistent problems should be handled through the phone or charger maker’s support channel.
This process can show that a case is involved, but it cannot by itself identify whether thickness, a card, a metal component or coil placement is the precise cause. Avoid claiming a specific cause unless removing or adding that component changes the result.
Wireless charging and magnetic attachment are different questions
A phone can charge wirelessly without attaching magnetically, and a magnetic ring can hold a phone in place without guaranteeing that the charging coils are compatible. Evaluate these functions separately:

- Wireless power: the phone and pad must use a compatible charging standard and have their coils close enough and correctly aligned.
- Magnetic alignment: the phone or case must contain the appropriate magnet arrangement, and the accessory must be designed for that arrangement.
- Case clearance: the case must preserve both the magnetic geometry and the short distance needed for charging.
What “MagSafe” means in this context
MagSafe is a branded magnetic accessory system. Qi2 is a wireless-charging standard that can include magnetic alignment. They are related in practical use, but the names are not interchangeable. A case advertised only as “MagSafe-compatible” may not provide reliable attachment or charging on a foldable phone that expects a different magnetic layout or Qi2 implementation.
Google’s Pixel 10 Pro Fold guidance
Google’s Pixel Help guidance says the Pixel 10 Pro Fold works with Pixelsnap and other Qi2-certified devices, and that magnetic attachment and wireless charging work best without a case or with a case designed for Qi2 wireless charging. For this model, a case should explicitly state Qi2 design rather than relying on a generic magnetic-ring description.
Samsung’s magnetic-case example
Samsung lists a Galaxy Z Fold8 Carbon Magnet Case with built-in magnets intended to help align the phone for wireless charging. That is a model-specific accessory claim; it should not be read as proof that the same case or magnetic arrangement fits another foldable. Samsung also warns that magnetic accessories may interfere with wireless charging and NFC, so remove magnetic add-ons if either function behaves unexpectedly.

How to choose a case and charger
Use the following checks before buying or replacing anything. A case that passes one check can still fail another.
| Check | What to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Exact model fit | The listing names your precise foldable generation and regional variant. | Coil position, hinge dimensions and magnetic hardware can change between generations. |
| Charging-system support | Explicit Qi or Qi2 support, or the phone maker’s named magnetic accessory system. | “Wireless charging” and “magnetic” are not enough to prove compatibility with both functions. |
| Thickness and construction | A slim, non-metal back; no unnecessary hinge bulk over the charging area. | Less material means a shorter coil-to-coil gap and easier alignment. |
| Wallet contents | No payment cards or metal inserts during charging. | Cards and metal can increase distance or interfere with the charging field. |
| Magnet placement | A ring or array designed for the phone and standard, not a generic adhesive magnet. | Correct placement affects both holding strength and coil alignment. |
| Charger certification | A WPC Qi certification mark for a third-party Qi charger. | It is a useful baseline for charger compliance, while placement remains model-specific. |
Symptoms, likely variables and corrective actions
| Symptom | First change to make | What the result means |
|---|---|---|
| No charging icon appears | Remove the case and align the phone’s coil area with the pad. | If charging starts, the case or alignment is involved; if not, investigate the charger, power source or phone. |
| Charging starts and stops | Remove cards, metal accessories and grips, then keep the phone still. | A shifting phone, accessory interference or marginal coil overlap may be responsible. |
| Charging is unusually slow | Test with the bare phone on a known-compatible Qi pad. | A thicker case or poor overlap may be reducing effective power transfer. |
| Magnet will not hold | Use a case explicitly designed for the phone’s supported magnetic system, or test without a case. | The case may lack the correct magnet layout even if wireless charging itself works. |
| NFC stops working after adding an accessory | Remove the magnetic accessory and retest. | Samsung warns that magnetic accessories can interfere with NFC as well as charging. |
Practical expectations and limits
A case that charges successfully on one pad is not guaranteed to behave the same way on another. Foldables have moving hinges, unusual proportions and model-specific coil locations, so small changes in placement matter more than a generic “works with wireless charging” badge suggests.
Do not treat the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8’s 5 mm instruction as a universal pass/fail measurement for every foldable. Likewise, do not infer that every Qi2-certified case will magnetically attach to every phone. Certification and marketing labels narrow the possibilities; the exact phone-case-pad combination still has to be compatible.
