Do Fitness App Reminders Actually Help You Move More? What the Evidence Shows

Short answer: fitness-app reminders can make you open or use an app, but current evidence does not show that reminders alone reliably make you take more steps. The most directly relevant randomized trial, involving 20,187 users in France, found that peer-comparison messages increased app utilization but did not significantly increase steps. Larger reviews find modest activity gains from broader digital programs that usually combine prompts with goals, tracking, feedback or social support. Those results cannot be credited to notifications alone.

What “help” should mean in this question

A reminder can produce several different outcomes, and they are not interchangeable:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Engagement: opening the app, checking a dashboard or responding to a message.
  • Activity: taking more steps or accumulating more moderate-to-vigorous physical-activity minutes.
  • Persistence: maintaining any change weeks or months later.

An app visit is an intermediate behavior, not proof that someone walked more. This distinction matters because many products report notifications opened or sessions completed, while the health outcome readers care about is movement. A persuasive message can therefore succeed on the first measure and fail on the second.

The most direct test: a 2026 randomized field trial

The closest match to the question is a randomized field experiment conducted among 20,187 users of a walking-rewards app in France. The study by Beatrice Braut, Claire Mollier and Sarah Zaccagni assigned users to peer-comparison messages, self-comparison messages or generic reminder messages for either one or three weeks. Its research record is for “Step into action: how reminders shape engagement in fitness apps,” published in Economica 93(372) in 2026 (DOI 10.1111/ecca.70053).

What was compared Duration Measured result
Peer-comparison messages One or three weeks Significantly increased app utilization; no significant increase in steps
Self-comparison messages One or three weeks No significant step increase reported
Generic reminder messages One or three weeks No significant step increase reported

The important result is not that messages were useless. They changed an engagement metric. The important result is that the change did not translate into a statistically significant step increase during the short study period. The authors caution against judging behavior-change programs by app activity alone, writing that the findings “highlight the limitations of relying on engagement metrics alone when evaluating app-based interventions aimed at behaviour change.”

This was one app, one national setting and a one- or three-week intervention. It is strong evidence against claiming that a push notification, by itself, reliably makes people move more; it does not establish what would happen after several months or in other populations. It also does not show that reminders can never help an individual. It shows that a large, real-world test did not detect a reliable step increase from these message strategies.

Why broader reviews look more positive

Reviews of digital-health interventions generally find small or moderate improvements in activity. However, the interventions in those reviews are bundles. A typical program may include reminders alongside a step goal, self-monitoring, progress feedback, educational material, incentives, coaching or social support. When the bundle performs better, the evidence does not identify the notification as the cause.

Review Evidence base Reported activity result What it does—and does not—show
npj Digital Medicine umbrella review (2024) 47 meta-analyses, 507 randomized controlled trials, 206,873 participants; searches through June 1, 2023 1,329 additional steps per day (95% CI 593.9–2,065.7) and 55.1 additional minutes per week of moderate-to-vigorous activity (95% CI 13.8–96.4) after intervention Digital and mobile-health programs can improve activity overall; the pooled estimate is not a reminder-only effect
Laranjo et al., British Journal of Sports Medicine (2021) 35 eligible trials; 28 trials and 7,454 participants in the meta-analysis; adults aged 18–65 without chronic illness About 1,850 additional steps per day (95% CI 1,247–2,457) Apps or trackers were associated with activity gains; text messaging and personalization correlated with stronger interventions, but components were not isolated
Romeo et al., Journal of Medical Internet Research (2019) 9 app-only trials with 1,740 participants; 6 supplied step-count data 476.75 additional steps per day (95% CI −229.57–1,183.07), not statistically significant (P=.19) App-only evidence was inconclusive; shorter interventions appeared more favorable, with no firm evidence of lasting effects

The 2024 umbrella review itself says that the “longevity and sustainability of these interventions in real-world contexts remain paramount for future investigations.” That is a reminder that a post-program average is not the same as a durable lifestyle change.

How to read the different step estimates

The figures above are not competing measurements of one identical intervention. The 2024 umbrella review combines e-health and m-health programs, including mobile apps, web programs and SMS. The 2021 review focuses on smartphone applications and activity trackers, while the 2019 review limits inclusion to app-only trials. They also differ in participant characteristics, follow-up periods and the other behavior-change tools supplied with the app.

A confidence interval shows the range of effects compatible with the data. The 2019 estimate ranges from a possible decrease of 229.57 steps per day to an increase of 1,183.07, and its P value of .19 means the result was not statistically significant. The larger positive estimates in 2021 and 2024 indicate that some digital programs can help, but they do not isolate reminders or guarantee a similar effect for a particular user.

Laranjo and colleagues also noted heterogeneity between studies, possible publication bias and the need for longer investigations. In other words, an average can conceal substantial variation: one program may help, another may do little, and the active ingredient may be a goal, feedback system, coaching element or social commitment rather than the alert itself.

What may make a reminder more useful

The evidence does not support a guaranteed winning message style, but it does indicate which design questions are worth asking.

Personalization and social framing

In the 2021 review, interventions that used text messaging and personalization were associated with stronger outcomes. The association does not prove that a personalized push notification caused the improvement. In the direct 2026 trial, peer comparison improved app utilization without producing a significant step increase. Social framing may therefore be good at attracting attention while still being insufficient to change movement.

A specific action instead of a vague prompt

“Move more” is difficult to execute. A reminder is more actionable when it is tied to a defined behavior, such as a ten-minute walk after lunch, taking stairs for one trip or walking during a scheduled break. This is a practical design choice, not a result proving that any particular wording works.

A measurable target and feedback loop

Programs in the positive reviews often combine prompts with a goal and a way to see progress. If you use reminders, connect them to a target you can measure—steps, active minutes or completed walks—and review the result rather than counting notifications opened.

Social support and accountability

Some digital interventions include challenges, coaching or social support. These additions can supply a reason to act after the alert is dismissed. They also make it impossible to attribute the whole effect to the reminder itself, so comparisons between apps should identify the full package.

Duration and persistence are unresolved

The direct reminder experiment lasted only one or three weeks. That is long enough to observe an immediate response, but not to establish a habit or determine whether people adapt to repeated alerts. The 2019 app-only review suggested that interventions lasting less than three months performed better than longer ones, while also saying that evidence about sustaining effects was needed. A short burst of extra walking during a study is therefore not equivalent to a year-round increase.

When an app advertises a success percentage, ask when the measurement was taken and whether participants were still using the program after the formal intervention ended. A durable effect should be visible in activity data after novelty and intensive prompting have faded, not just in the first days after installation.

How to test whether reminders work for you

Population studies give averages. You can still evaluate whether a reminder changes your own behavior without treating your result as proof for everyone.

  1. Choose one outcome. Use daily steps or weekly moderate-to-vigorous activity minutes. Do not use app opens as the primary endpoint.
  2. Record a baseline. Track the outcome for at least one week with your normal routine and no new reminder schedule.
  3. Predefine the intervention. Select a reminder time, wording and linked action. Keep other changes—new workouts, diet changes or a different tracker—as consistent as practical.
  4. Run the reminder period. Continue long enough to cover ordinary workdays and weekends. A one-week result is easily distorted by weather, illness, travel or an unusual schedule.
  5. Compare like with like. Compare average steps or active minutes with baseline, and note missed alerts, days away from home and technical gaps.
  6. Check persistence. Turn reminders off for a period and see whether the behavior remains. A temporary increase while alerts are present is different from a habit that survives without them.

This approach can tell you whether a particular prompt is useful in your routine. It cannot establish that the reminder caused every difference, because daily activity has many competing influences.

Do you need to buy a tracker?

No purchase is necessary to answer whether reminders help you move. A phone can record steps, and a wearable can make measurement easier, but owning a tracker is not evidence that its notifications cause more activity. The broader tracker studies evaluate complete interventions, not a purchase effect. Choose equipment for measurement convenience or features you value, not because the hardware itself has been shown to make reminders effective.

How to judge a fitness app’s reminder claims

Before treating a notification feature as an activity intervention, look for answers to these questions:

  • What outcome was measured? Prefer steps or active minutes over opens, clicks or a self-reported feeling of motivation.
  • What else was included? Identify goals, tracking, feedback, incentives, coaching and social features.
  • How long did the study last? The direct reminder trial lasted one or three weeks, and the longer-term effect remains uncertain.
  • Who participated? Results from adults without chronic illness, a particular country or one app may not generalize to your situation.
  • Was the comparison randomized? A randomized control is more informative than an app’s before-and-after engagement chart.
  • Was the result statistically clear? Look for confidence intervals and whether the step outcome—not merely engagement—was significant.

No source establishes one fitness app or one message format as best. A fair comparison should describe the measured outcome, reminder design, intervention length, bundled behavior-change features, population and geography.

Common interpretation pitfalls

  • Confusing attention with action: a high open rate can coexist with unchanged steps.
  • Taking a bundled result apart: if an intervention includes goals, feedback and coaching, its overall gain cannot be assigned to the notification.
  • Overgeneralizing one setting: the 2026 result came from one app and users in France.
  • Ignoring uncertainty: a confidence interval that crosses zero, as in the 2019 synthesis, does not establish an effect.
  • Assuming short-term novelty lasts: immediate engagement may decline, and long-term persistence has not been established.

What the evidence does not establish

  • Opening an app does not demonstrate that a person walked more.
  • A wearable or step tracker can measure activity, but owning one is not evidence that its reminders cause more activity.
  • The pooled gains from digital-health reviews cannot be reassigned to notifications when the interventions also used goals, feedback or support.
  • The 2019 app-only synthesis was not statistically significant for steps, so it should not be presented as proof of an app effect.
  • There is no established universal health benefit or specific risk attributable to notification reminders alone in the evidence summarized here.

Practical verdict

Use reminders as prompts, not as proof that a program is working. They may help you notice a goal or return to an app, especially when personalized and connected to a concrete plan. But the best direct trial found engagement without a significant step increase, and the more favorable meta-analyses evaluated multi-part programs. To know whether reminders are helping you move, measure steps or active minutes over time and check whether the change persists when the alerts stop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do fitness-app reminders increase physical activity?

They can increase app engagement, but the strongest direct test—a 2026 randomized trial of 20,187 users—found no statistically significant increase in steps from peer-comparison, self-comparison or generic reminder messages over one or three weeks.

Why do some reviews report more steps?

The 2024 and 2021 reviews evaluated broader programs that combined apps or trackers with goals, self-monitoring, feedback, text messaging, personalization or social support. Their pooled gains cannot be attributed to reminders alone.

Are personalized or social reminders better?

Personalization and text messaging were associated with stronger outcomes in the 2021 review, and peer-comparison messages increased app use in the 2026 trial. Neither finding proves that those message styles independently increase steps.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How long do reminder benefits last?

That remains uncertain. The direct trial lasted one or three weeks, and reviews have called for longer follow-up to determine whether activity gains persist after the prompts or program end.

Do I need a smartwatch or paid app?

No. A purchase is not required to test the question. A phone or existing tracker can measure steps, while ownership of a wearable has not been shown to make reminder notifications effective.

How can I tell whether reminders help me personally?

Track steps or active minutes for at least a week before and during a predefined reminder schedule, keep other routines as consistent as practical, and then check whether activity remains higher after turning alerts off.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: reminders may bring you back to an app, but app engagement is not the same as movement. Evidence for reminders alone is inconclusive; measure steps or active minutes and look for a lasting change.
