Elephants can imitate sounds, but the best-known report does not show that they routinely copy one another’s deep rumbles. A 2005 study described two individual cases: one elephant produced truck-like rumbles, while another made chirp-like calls associated with Asian elephants. A separate 2024 study found evidence of name-like calls used to address particular elephants; its authors said those calls probably do not rely on copying the receiver.
What elephant vocal imitation has been documented?
In a 2005 Nature report, Joyce H. Poole and colleagues described two examples of vocal imitation by African savannah elephants. These are case reports, not a measure of how often elephants imitate sounds or how widespread the behavior is.
Mlaika produced truck-like rumbles
Mlaika, a young elephant living near a highway, produced rumbling sounds resembling the trucks she heard. The example shows imitation of a familiar environmental sound—not an elephant copying another elephant’s rumble.
Calimero made Asian-elephant-like chirps
Calimero, an African elephant who had lived for 18 years alongside two female Asian elephants, produced chirp-like calls associated with Asian elephants. This case is relevant to sound learning between species, but it does not establish that elephants generally imitate one another’s deep calls.

What did the 2024 “name-like calls” study find?
A 2024 study reported evidence that wild African elephants use individually specific calls to address particular receivers. The researchers combined machine-learning analysis with playback experiments to investigate whether calls were receiver-specific. Their finding concerns who a call is directed to, not an elephant copying the sound of another elephant’s rumble.

The authors’ interpretation was that elephants probably do not imitate the receiver’s calls when addressing that individual. Lead author Michael Pardo described this as more like the way human names work. “Name-like” is a comparison about addressing individuals; it does not establish that elephant calls are human language.

How the two findings differ
| Finding | Question studied | Evidence and scope |
|---|---|---|
| 2005 vocal-imitation report | Can elephants reproduce sounds they hear? | Two individual examples: truck-like rumbles and Asian-elephant-like chirps. They do not show how common imitation is. |
| 2024 name-like-call study | Do calls address particular elephants? | Machine-learning analysis and playback experiments supported receiver-specific calling; the authors said addressing probably does not depend on imitating the receiver. |
Why might elephants imitate sounds?
The 2005 authors proposed that vocal imitation could help maintain individual-specific bonds as elephant social groupings change. That is a suggested function, not something demonstrated by the two cases themselves. A 2021 review discusses elephant vocal flexibility, including vocal learning and reported mimicry, but review context does not turn the case reports into evidence that imitation is routine.
