Yes. Graphics modes change the rendering work a game performs and its frame-rate target; they are not cosmetic labels. A quality or fidelity mode normally spends more of the console’s GPU budget on resolution, ray tracing, lighting, shadows and effects, often targeting 30 frames per second (FPS). A performance mode reduces some of those costs to target about 60 FPS or more. Because many games use dynamic resolution and image reconstruction, the visible difference depends on the title, scene and console model.
What a graphics mode changes
Each frame is built from a limited rendering budget. The game must decide how many pixels to shade, how detailed lighting and shadows should be, whether to calculate ray-traced reflections or global illumination, how many effects to draw, and how quickly to repeat that work. A mode is a preset for those trade-offs.

There are two separate things to judge: still-image fidelity and motion and control. Fidelity modes generally improve the first. Performance modes generally improve the second. Neither is automatically “better”; the right choice depends on the game, display and the way you play.

Quality or fidelity mode
Quality, fidelity or resolution modes prioritize the appearance of an individual frame. Developers may raise the internal rendering resolution, enable ray tracing, use higher-quality shadows and reflections, increase foliage or crowd detail, and preserve expensive lighting effects. The extra work usually means a target around 30 FPS, although some games offer 40 FPS or other intermediate targets.

At 30 FPS, a new frame is delivered every 33.3 milliseconds when the game holds its target. A paused image can therefore look cleaner, with finer distant geometry, more stable reflections or sharper edges. During a fast camera turn, however, the image is updated less often than at 60 FPS.
Performance mode
Performance modes are tuned for a more responsive presentation. The game may lower internal resolution, reduce ray-tracing features, simplify shadows or effects, reduce object density, or use a less demanding lighting path. The saved GPU time is used to target about 60 FPS, and some titles support 120 FPS modes.
At 60 FPS, a frame arrives every 16.7 milliseconds when the target is maintained. Camera movement and animation receive twice as many updates as a locked 30-FPS presentation, so motion generally looks clearer and controls feel more immediate. The trade-off can be softer fine detail, less accurate reflections or fewer visual effects.

Some games add a balanced mode between the two familiar choices. A 40-FPS target, for example, requires a frame every 25 milliseconds: smoother than 30 FPS while allowing more visual quality than a typical 60-FPS mode. It normally requires a display running at 120 Hz so that each game frame can be shown evenly three times. Availability, resolution and enabled effects are set by the individual developer; do not assume that a “balanced” label has the same behavior across games.
How the trade-off looks in practice
| What you notice | Quality/fidelity priority | Performance priority |
|---|---|---|
| Frame-rate target | Often about 30 FPS; some titles use 40 FPS or another intermediate target | Often about 60 FPS; selected games support 120 FPS |
| Internal resolution | Usually higher, but may still scale dynamically | Usually lower or more aggressively dynamic |
| Ray tracing | More likely to be enabled or use higher-quality settings | May be disabled or reduced to meet the frame target |
| Lighting, shadows and reflections | More expensive versions are more likely | Some effects or quality levels may be reduced |
| Motion clarity and control | Less frequent updates at a 30-FPS target | More frequent updates and generally more responsive movement |
| Best fit | Slow exploration, cinematic scenes and players who value fine detail | Action, racing, shooters and players sensitive to responsiveness |
This table describes common design choices, not a console-wide rule. A developer can make a 30-FPS mode with unusually high effects, a 60-FPS mode with ray tracing, or a mode that changes several settings at once.

Why the console’s “4K” output does not tell the whole story
Many current games render internally at a changing resolution and then reconstruct the image to the output resolution selected in the console menu. The internal render may drop when a scene becomes expensive and rise again when the GPU has spare capacity. Reconstruction can produce a convincing 4K-like image from fewer source pixels, but the number printed by the console or television is not proof that every pixel was rendered natively at 4K.
Dynamic resolution is normally used to protect the frame-rate target. In a performance mode, the game may reduce internal resolution during a large battle and increase it in a quiet room. Halo Support describes this behavior directly: when system demand decreases, such as entering an area with fewer enemies, resolution can scale back up to improve image quality. The reverse can happen during heavy effects or dense crowds.

Documented examples from current consoles
Grand Theft Auto V on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X
Rockstar Games’ 2022 documentation gives three named modes for the current-generation version. Fidelity Mode is “tuned for the highest visual quality and targets 30 FPS.” It uses native 4K output and ray tracing on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. Performance Mode targets 60 FPS and uses upscaled 4K. Performance RT combines upscaled 4K, ray tracing and a 60-FPS target. These are documented settings for that game, not a universal definition of every console’s modes.
The Elder Scrolls Online on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X
Bethesda’s 2021 documentation lists Performance mode at 60 FPS and 1440p, while Fidelity mode targets 4K at 30 FPS on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. This is a clear example of the usual exchange: a higher frame-rate target paired with a lower stated resolution, and a higher-resolution target paired with a lower frame rate.

What Xbox Series consoles support
Microsoft’s Xbox documentation says Series X and Series S support frame rates up to 120 FPS when a game and display support that mode. Series X is positioned as a native-4K console, while Series S is designed around 1440p with 4K upscaling. 4K at up to 120 FPS requires compatible content and a compatible display; the console’s maximum capability does not make every game run at that setting.
What PlayStation 5 supports
Sony’s current support guidance says PlayStation 5 can output 4K at 120 Hz when the display, HDMI connection and video-output settings are compatible. Sony recommends the included Ultra High-Speed Cable or another cable rated for 4K at 120 Hz. A game still has to provide a high-refresh mode, and the television or monitor must accept the signal on the specific HDMI input being used.
Is performance mode really lower quality?
Usually, yes in at least one measurable rendering dimension, but “lower quality” is incomplete. Performance mode may render fewer internal pixels or disable an effect, yet the higher frame rate can make moving detail easier to follow. In a fast game, a 60-FPS image can appear clearer during a turn than a sharper 30-FPS image because the display receives updates twice as often.
The difference is also scene-dependent. A static view of a distant skyline may reveal the resolution and ray-tracing advantage of fidelity mode. A rapid pan across that skyline may favor performance mode because motion is sampled more frequently. Variable refresh rate (VRR), when supported by both game and display, can reduce visible tearing or unevenness when the frame rate fluctuates, but it does not restore effects or pixels removed by the performance preset.
Does a 120 Hz display make console graphics look better?
Not by itself. A 120 Hz panel can refresh twice as often as a 60 Hz panel, but it improves the picture only when the console and game supply additional frames or a mode such as 40 FPS that benefits from even frame spacing. A 30-FPS quality mode does not become 60 FPS merely because the television is capable of 120 Hz.

To use supported 4K/120-Hz output, all of these links must work together:
- A console model that supports the required output.
- A game with a 120-FPS, 40-FPS or other high-refresh mode.
- A television or monitor with a 120-Hz panel and an HDMI input that accepts the required signal.
- An HDMI connection rated for the bandwidth, such as an “Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable for 4K 120 Hz.”
- Video-output settings on the console that permit 120-Hz operation.
If any component is limited to 60 Hz, the system will fall back to a lower refresh rate or resolution. Check the display’s manual for which HDMI ports support 4K/120 Hz; ports on the same television are not always equivalent.
How to choose a mode on PS5 or Xbox
- Check the game’s own description. Open its graphics, display or video menu and read the explanation for each mode. Names such as Fidelity, Quality, Resolution, Performance, Frame Rate or Balanced are not standardized.
- Match the choice to the game. For competitive shooters, racing and other camera-heavy action, start with the highest stable frame-rate option. For slower exploration or a visually focused single-player game, test the quality option.
- Check your display first. If the display is 60 Hz, a 120-FPS or 40-FPS option cannot be shown at its intended refresh rate. A 4K television may still accept a 60-FPS signal while rejecting 4K/120 Hz.
- Look for a separate ray-tracing switch. Some titles expose ray tracing independently; others include it only in a named mode. Enabling it can alter the frame-rate target or trigger a lower dynamic-resolution range.
- Test movement, not only a paused image. Rotate the camera, traverse a busy area and watch fine geometry at distance. Note whether the benefit you value is sharper static detail or steadier motion.
- Recheck after patches. Developers can change resolution ranges, frame targets and effects in updates, so a mode’s behavior can evolve during a game’s life.
Troubleshooting unexpected results
The game looks soft in performance mode
That can be expected. Performance modes commonly reduce internal resolution or use more aggressive dynamic scaling. Confirm that the game is actually in performance mode, then compare a quiet area with a busy one; the image may sharpen when the GPU load falls.
The television says 60 Hz when 120 Hz is selected
Verify the game supports a 120-Hz mode, connect the console directly to a compatible HDMI input, use the included or another Ultra High-Speed HDMI cable, and check the console’s 120-Hz video setting. Soundbars, receivers and HDMI switches can impose a 60-Hz limit if they do not support the required signal.

The frame rate feels uneven
A target is not a guarantee. Heavy scenes can push a game below its target, and uneven frame pacing can be noticeable even when an average counter appears close to 60 FPS. Enable VRR if the game, console and display all support it, and check whether the title offers a capped or balanced option.

Two consoles show different options
Mode availability depends on the game’s implementation and console model. Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S and PlayStation 5 do not necessarily receive identical resolution ranges or effects, even when the menu labels match. Use the specifications and mode notes supplied by the game’s developer for that platform.
What the labels do—and do not—promise
Microsoft Game Dev documentation treats resolution, frame rate and graphics modes as material rendering variables because they change GPU workload. That explains why switching a mode can affect several settings at once. The label does not promise a fixed internal resolution, a locked frame rate in every scene or identical ray-tracing quality across platforms.
Rockstar’s GTA V and Bethesda’s ESO figures demonstrate the pattern with specific targets, while Xbox and Sony documentation defines the hardware and signal requirements for high-refresh output. Treat those values as documented examples for those products and dates, not as a preset shared by every PS5 or Xbox game.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesBottom line
Console graphics modes make real technical trade-offs. Fidelity or quality mode usually buys higher internal resolution and more advanced lighting at about 30 FPS; performance mode usually sacrifices some of that detail for about 60 FPS or higher. Dynamic resolution and reconstruction mean neither the resolution number nor the mode name tells the entire story. Choose based on whether you value still-image detail or motion and control, then verify the game’s own description and your display’s refresh-rate and HDMI requirements.
