Some classic arcade-shooter ports on Steam support couch multiplayer and gamepads, but there is no catalog-wide guarantee. Ikaruga is explicitly listed for local two-player play, including a mode that lets two players share one controller, and it names an Xbox 360 controller alongside keyboard and mouse support. Other collections make broader claims about playing with a friend or using a gamepad without identifying controller models or explaining whether two separate pads work. Check each title’s own Steam listing and controller settings before buying or planning a two-player session.
What “local multiplayer” and “controller support” actually promise
Store-page wording can describe several different experiences. “Local” means the players are on the same computer rather than connecting over the internet, but it does not by itself tell you how many controllers are required. A game may offer two-player shared-screen action, split-screen play, a one-controller mode, or a combination of those. “Gamepad” or “controller support” indicates an input method, not a guarantee that every current USB or Bluetooth device will be recognized.

For a useful compatibility check, separate four questions:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Does the listing explicitly mention local, shared-screen, or split-screen multiplayer?
- Does it identify a controller type, or does it use only a generic “gamepad/controller” label?
- Can two people use two separate controllers, or is there a one-controller option?
- Is the advertised multiplayer local, online, remote, or unspecified?
The official examples available for this topic answer those questions unevenly. That is why a positive statement for one port should not be treated as proof for an entire franchise or genre.

What the documented Steam examples say
| Port or collection | Local-play evidence | Controller information | What remains unspecified |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ikaruga (Steam, released February 18, 2014) | Steam listing says “2 Players game (Local),” lists shared/split-screen play, and describes a two-player mode that can use one controller. | Xbox 360 controller, keyboard, and mouse are named. | The listing does not specifically guarantee current-generation gamepads or explain every two-controller arrangement. |
| Contra Anniversary Collection | Konami describes playing alone or with a friend and lists Steam as a platform. | No controller model or detailed per-title input matrix is given in the cited material. | Whether each included game supports local co-op, which games require one or two pads, and how newer controllers behave are not established by that page. |
| Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection | Steam’s support listing reports shared/split-screen co-op. | The listing recommends a gamepad or controller. | No particular modern controller model, dual-controller layout, or per-game behavior is identified. |
This table is deliberately conservative: “not specified” is different from “unsupported.” It means the cited official page does not make the promise you would need for a confident setup.
Ikaruga: the clearest local two-player case
Ikaruga provides the strongest documented answer. Its Steam page identifies “2 Players game (Local)” and shared/split-screen play. It also states that two players can play with one controller in its Double Play Mode. That is unusually useful information for a couch setup because it confirms local play and identifies a way to start without two physical pads.
What the input disclosure covers
The same listing names an Xbox 360 controller, keyboard, and mouse. Treat that as a specific disclosure about the hardware category the publisher chose to document, not as a blanket certification for every newer Xbox, PlayStation, Switch-style, Bluetooth, or generic USB pad. The page does not specifically guarantee current-generation gamepads.
One controller is not the same as two controllers
Double Play Mode answers the question “Can two people play using one controller?” It does not, by itself, answer “Can two people each use a separate controller?” If separate pads matter to your setup, confirm the game’s current controller configuration after installation and test both devices before inviting a second player.
Contra Anniversary Collection: friend play is documented, details are not
Konami’s collection page says the games can be played alone or with a friend and lists Steam among the platforms. That supports the broad expectation of cooperative or competitive friend play on the collection, but the cited description does not provide a controller compatibility matrix. It also does not state which individual titles share the same multiplayer behavior.
Because a collection can contain games with different original arcade or console control schemes, do not infer that every included title accepts two modern pads in the same way. Open the Steam page for the collection, then check any per-game manual, options screen, or in-game player-select prompt after installation.

Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection: gamepad recommended, model not named
Steam’s support listing for Arcade Classics Anniversary Collection includes shared/split-screen co-op and recommends a gamepad or controller. That is a useful indication for couch play, yet it stops short of naming a specific controller family. A recommendation to use a gamepad should therefore be read as “a controller is the intended input,” not “every current controller will work without configuration.”
How to verify a port before you buy
Use the following process for any classic shooter not covered by an explicit statement above. It avoids assuming that a genre, publisher, or collection uses one universal control scheme.
- Open the individual Steam store page. Do not rely on a franchise description or a retailer’s short summary. Look for the Features area and any text that says local, shared-screen, split-screen, or two-player.
- Record the exact multiplayer wording. “Local co-op,” “shared/split screen,” “multiplayer,” and “online co-op” are not interchangeable. If the page mentions only online or remote play, it has not established couch multiplayer.
- Check the input disclosure. Note whether the page names a model or standard, such as the Xbox 360 controller, or uses only “gamepad/controller.” A named device is stronger evidence for that device than a generic icon is for all devices.
- Look for player-count and mode details. Determine whether the game supports two local players, whether it offers a one-controller mode, and whether the display is shared or split. If any of those details are absent, mark them as unknown rather than assuming.
- Review the system requirements and recent developer notes. These may reveal a platform-specific limitation or a change to input handling. Keep the qualification attached to the version you are buying; a page’s wording can change with updates.
- Check Steam’s per-game controller settings. In the Steam Library, open the game’s Properties and select the Controller section. The available options can vary by client version and title. If Steam Input is offered, note whether it is enabled, disabled, or set to a per-game default before troubleshooting.
- Test before the event. Connect the intended controller or controllers, launch the game, and reach its input or player-select screen. Confirm that each device moves the expected player and that buttons can be remapped if necessary.
This process is especially important when a listing identifies only a generic controller. It gives you a way to distinguish a missing store-page promise from an actual configuration problem.
Setting up local play with one or two controllers
One-controller sessions
For a title that explicitly offers one-controller multiplayer, connect the pad before launching, start the local mode, and follow the game’s player-join prompt. In Ikaruga, the listing specifically documents Double Play Mode, so a second physical controller is not required for that mode. The game still needs to expose the mode in its own menus; a generic two-player label does not automatically mean one-controller play.
Two-controller sessions
When two separate pads are the goal, connect both before entering the multiplayer menu. Watch for a distinct “Press Start,” “Join,” or player assignment prompt for each device; the exact wording is game-dependent. If both controllers control player one, the title may be using a shared profile, a Steam Input layout, or a one-device mode rather than recognizing two independent players.
Recommended Free Tools
Use wired USB temporarily if Bluetooth pairing introduces uncertainty. A wired test does not prove that Bluetooth will work later, but it helps isolate pairing and wireless-power issues from the game’s own input handling. Once both players are assigned correctly, save or note the working Steam Input configuration if the client offers that option.

Keyboard plus controller
Ikaruga‘s listing names keyboard and mouse as supported inputs in addition to an Xbox 360 controller. That confirms multiple input categories are documented for that port, but it does not state every possible keyboard-plus-pad player assignment. Test the exact combination you intend to use rather than assuming that a supported keyboard can always serve as player two.
Modern-controller compatibility: what you can and cannot infer
“Modern controller” is a broad description covering devices with different connection methods, button labels, drivers, and operating-system mappings. The documented Ikaruga disclosure names an Xbox 360 controller; the two collection examples use either no model name or a generic gamepad recommendation. None of those statements establishes universal support for every current device.
Steam Input can sometimes translate a controller’s signals into the layout a game expects, but its presence is not evidence that a particular port has been tested with your hardware. Treat it as a configuration layer to verify, not a compatibility guarantee. A current pad may work immediately, require a community or custom layout, expose duplicate inputs, or fail to appear until another input mode is selected. Only the game’s own listing and your test can settle that question for your setup.

Signals that deserve extra caution
- The store page says “controller support” but names no standard or model.
- The game is a collection whose individual titles may have different player-count rules.
- The listing advertises multiplayer without saying local, shared-screen, or split-screen.
- You need two independent controllers, while the page documents only a one-controller mode.
- Your pad connects through Bluetooth and has not been recognized in the game’s own input screen.
Troubleshooting branches when local play fails
The game launches but shows no controller input
Confirm that the operating system sees the device, reconnect it, and relaunch the game. Then inspect the title’s Steam Properties → Controller setting and test the available Steam Input choices one at a time. If the store page names a specific device but yours is a different model, regard the mismatch as an unresolved compatibility question rather than a defect proven by the listing.
Only one of two controllers is detected
Close the game, connect both devices, and start again so they are present during initialization. Check whether Steam has assigned both pads to the same player or virtual device. If the title documents only one-controller play, the absence of a second-player assignment may be a game limitation, not a hardware fault.
Both players control the same character
Look for a player-join or controller-assignment screen and reset the input layout. Disable duplicate virtual mappings if Steam Input is creating a combined device, then retest. Do not assume that a shared-screen label means independent controls; the game’s mode description must specify how players are assigned.

The controller works in menus but not in gameplay
Check whether the game uses separate menu and gameplay bindings, then remap the affected actions in its options. A controller recognized by Steam is not necessarily mapped to every in-game action. Save the working layout and test a complete local match, not only the title screen.
A practical buying decision
Choose a port with confidence when its page answers all four questions: local play is explicit, the display or mode is described, the number of players is clear, and your controller type is named or has been verified in a trial session. Ikaruga meets the first three in its listing and names an Xbox 360 controller; its one-controller Double Play Mode is an additional option. The two anniversary collections provide useful friend-play or gamepad evidence, but leave more hardware and per-title details for you to confirm.
If your priority is a living-room session with two current pads, do not buy on the strength of a generic “multiplayer” badge alone. Favor a page that says local or shared/split-screen, then test both controllers during the refund-eligible period available under Steam’s policies. Keep your expectation narrow: a documented feature is evidence for that game and version, not a promise about every classic arcade shooter port.
What the available documentation does not establish
The examples above are representative, not an exhaustive survey of classic shooter ports. They do not provide a compatibility percentage, a complete list of supported modern controllers, or a universal answer about dual-controller behavior. Controller model compatibility beyond the devices explicitly named on each page remains title-specific. Check the individual listing and the game’s own controller configuration whenever that detail affects your purchase.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can two people play Ikaruga with only one controller?
Yes. Its Steam listing explicitly describes Double Play Mode, in which two players can use one controller.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDoes a generic “gamepad supported” label guarantee that my current controller will work?
No. It confirms an intended controller input category, but it does not identify every compatible model. Verify the specific device in Steam Input and in the game’s player-assignment screen.
Are all games in an anniversary collection guaranteed to have the same local multiplayer controls?
No. A collection-level statement does not establish per-title player counts, controller assignments, or two-pad behavior for every included game.
