Yes—regular, non-boss enemies respawn when you rest at a Lantern in Valor Mortis. The dependable farming loop is to activate a Lantern, defeat the nearby regular enemies, collect their Catalysts, return to the Lantern, rest, and clear the same group again. Enraged red-eyed elites and bosses are exceptions: they do not return after a Lantern rest.
That distinction matters because enemy drops are repeatable, while Catalyst Clots, most quest rewards, and boss rewards are effectively one-time sources. Your route, enemy selection, Surplus Amber bonus, and death-recovery discipline determine how many Catalysts each reset is actually worth.

What respawns after resting at a Lantern?
The reset rule is stated in the game’s tutorial: "Resting at a Lantern has the following effects: Health and Nephtoglobin are fully restored. All non-boss enemies are revived." In practical terms, a Lantern rest revives ordinary enemies in the surrounding area, allowing you to farm the same pack repeatedly.
| Enemy or source | Respawns after Lantern rest? | How to treat it when farming |
|---|---|---|
| Regular non-boss enemies | Yes | Repeatable source; clear the pack, rest, and clear it again. |
| Enraged elites with red glowing eyes | No | Usually a one-time encounter for that playthrough. |
| Bosses | No | Boss Catalyst rewards are not an infinite farming loop. |
| World Catalyst Clots | Generally no | Collectible pickups are one-off sources. |
| Quest and most special rewards | Not an unlimited reset source | Use them as progression income rather than a repeatable route. |
Regular enemies are the repeatable source
Any route built around ordinary soldiers, civilians, volunteers, or other non-boss enemies can be run over and over as long as the enemies are close enough to a Lantern to make the travel and reset time worthwhile. A compact group is usually better than a scattered zone because less time is spent moving between kills and the Lantern.

Red-eyed Enraged enemies are an exception
Elite enemies with red glowing eyes enter an Enraged state and do not come back when you rest. Do not build a long-term farm around an elite simply because it pays more than a normal enemy; once that encounter is cleared, its payout is normally exhausted.
How the Lantern farming reset works
- Find and activate a Lantern. Choose one with a nearby pack of regular enemies. Distance is a major part of the route’s real efficiency.
- Rest before the first clear if needed. Resting restores health and Nephtoglobin and establishes the checkpoint from which you will begin the run.
- Clear only the repeatable enemies. Prioritize ordinary non-boss targets. Skip or treat red-eyed Enraged elites and bosses as one-time encounters.
- Collect every Catalyst drop. Confirm the currency has been picked up before returning. A dropped pile on the ground is not protected from a later death.
- Return to the same Lantern and rest. The regular enemies are revived, while your health and Nephtoglobin are restored. You can then repeat the route.
The loop works because the rest action resets enemy state, not because the Catalyst item itself respawns. A Catalyst Clot you already collected is not recreated by resting; instead, the ordinary enemies that pay Catalysts are revived.
Best documented Catalyst farming routes
Route value depends on Catalysts per clear, enemy value per kill, walking distance, reset time, combat risk, and whether every target is a regular enemy. The measured figures below come from 2026 route data and are not guarantees for every patch or platform.
| Route | Area and progression | Targets described | Reported payout per clear | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tribunal Square | City of Orphans | 37 nearby enemies | 13,910 Catalysts | Highest measured repeatable cluster in the cited route analysis once the area is unlocked. |
| Old Mine | Caverns | Nearby regular enemies around Old Mine Lantern | 8,945 Catalysts | Richest early route in the cited data before later regions open. |
| Trenches Lantern | Chapter 1 | Three Risen Soldiers | Not stated | Very early, short, and comparatively safe practice loop. |
| Marketplace barn | Fallen Village, Chapter 3 | Five Shambling Civilians | Not stated | Early progression option with a compact group. |
| Under the Bridge Lantern | Chapter 5 | One Remnant of the Iron Regiment | Not stated | Simple route when you want minimal travel and a single nearby target. |
| Chapel Lantern | Chapter 10 | One Remnant | Not stated | Late-chapter convenience route rather than a measured top-yield cluster. |
Tribunal Square: the highest measured repeatable cluster
MetaBot.GG’s route calculation places Tribunal Square in the City of Orphans at 13,910 Catalysts for a clear of 37 nearby enemies. That is the strongest cited repeatable total, but the total only helps if you can clear the group consistently and reach the Lantern quickly. A slower or riskier run can produce less currency per minute than the headline total suggests.

Old Mine: the early-game choice
Old Mine in the Caverns is listed at 8,945 Catalysts per clear and is described as the richest early route before later regions become available. If Tribunal Square is locked, Old Mine is the clearest progression target for a dedicated farm. Its value comes from having a substantial payout close enough to a Lantern to support repeated resets.
Chapter-by-chapter fallback routes
The shorter routes listed by AllThingsHow are useful when you have not reached the larger clusters. The Trenches Lantern has three Risen Soldiers in Chapter 1; the Marketplace barn in Fallen Village has five Shambling Civilians in Chapter 3; Under the Bridge in Chapter 5 has one Remnant of the Iron Regiment; and the Chapel Lantern in Chapter 10 has one Remnant. Exact Catalysts per clear were not stated for these four examples, so they should be judged by your clear time, safety, and travel distance rather than by an assumed payout.
Which enemies are worth farming?
Enemy count alone is a poor route-ranking method. The cited payout ranges are 1,200–2,700 Catalysts for an Eternal Guardsman, 1,500–3,500 for an Abomination, and 500–2,500 for a Volunteer. Those ranges show why a small, high-value group can beat a large crowd of low-value targets.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Compare value per kill. A route with fewer Abominations or Eternal Guardsmen may outperform a longer route filled with Volunteers.
- Prefer a dense cluster. Every extra corridor, ladder, or arena transition reduces the number of clears you can complete in the same time.
- Account for failure risk. A high-paying group is not efficient if deaths repeatedly erase the currency you were farming.
- Check enemy type before committing. Regular enemies support an ongoing loop; red-eyed Enraged elites do not.
Because the published ranges overlap, there is no universal ranking for every individual enemy. The practical test is your own Catalysts per completed cycle: record the payout, include the time to kill and return, and discard routes that require repeated healing, long detours, or frequent deaths.

Increase each clear with Surplus Amber
Surplus Amber increases the Catalyst payout from kills. The reported bonuses are rank I +10%, rank II +12.5%, and rank III +15%.
| Surplus Amber rank | Reported Catalyst bonus per kill | Reported location |
|---|---|---|
| I | +10% | Valley of Ashes, near Military Camp Lantern |
| II | +12.5% | Caverns, near Old Mine Lantern |
| III | +15% | The Outskirts, near Market Square Lantern |
Use the bonus on repeatable routes where you expect many kills. At rank III, a listed enemy payout is increased by 15% before you compare the route’s total. The locations above are the reported placements; the actual value of collecting one depends on how soon you can reach the relevant area and how often you farm afterward.
How to avoid losing Catalysts when you die
Death changes the farming calculation. MetaBot.GG reports that dying drops every Catalyst you were carrying. You can return and pick up the lost pile, but a second death before recovery permanently deletes it. PowerUp Gaming gives the same warning: the unrecovered pile is lost if you die again.

Spend before a risky run
Spend accumulated Catalysts at a Lantern before attempting a difficult area, boss approach, or unfamiliar route. Banking the currency reduces the amount that can be lost in one mistake. This is especially important when a route’s payout is large enough to tempt you into carrying several clears’ worth of currency.

Recover immediately after a death
- Return to the death location without starting an unnecessary fight.
- Pick up the dropped Catalyst pile.
- Do not begin another farm cycle until the currency is safely recovered or spent.
- If the route is too dangerous, change to a safer Lantern and accept a lower payout rather than risking a second death.
Remnant’s Return
MetaBot.GG also reports that Remnant’s Return absorbs lost Catalysts automatically. Treat this as a recovery safeguard, not as permission to carry unlimited currency: the ordinary rule remains that a second death before pickup deletes the pile, and the exact behavior of any recovery effect should be checked in your current build.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does not provide an infinite reset?
Lantern rests revive regular enemies, but they do not turn every Catalyst source into a farm. The main limits are:
- World Catalyst Clots: a launch-build guide counted 191 world Clots worth 342,450 Catalysts in total. They are placed collectibles, not ordinary enemies that reappear after resting.
- Bosses: boss encounters and their rewards do not respawn through Lantern rests.
- Enraged elites: red-eyed elites remain cleared after defeat.
- Quest and special rewards: these are progression payouts, not a guaranteed repeatable income stream.
The result is a two-part economy: collect one-time exploration and encounter rewards as you progress, then use regular enemy packs for repeatable farming whenever you need more Catalysts.

The cited launch-build data lists a level cap of 400. MetaBot.GG reports 602,002 cumulative Catalysts to reach level 50 and 165,974,460 cumulative Catalysts to reach level 400. These are cumulative totals, not the cost of one level, and they come from the PC launch build, Steam build 25907482, datamined October 13, 2026.
Best Value
At lower levels, a short early route may be sufficient for a single upgrade. At higher levels, the gap between a compact repeatable route and a scattered low-value route becomes substantial, so use the best unlocked cluster you can clear safely. Do not treat the level-400 figure as a permanent target for every version: balance patches can change both enemy payouts and progression costs.
A disciplined farming routine
- Choose the nearest viable Lantern. Start with Old Mine if you are still in the early progression path; move to Tribunal Square after unlocking it if its 37-enemy cluster is practical for your build.
- Equip the highest Surplus Amber rank you have. The reported bonuses rise from 10% to 12.5% to 15% per kill.
- Bank your current Catalysts. Spend them before a run that could kill you, especially if you are testing a new route.
- Clear only repeatable targets. Skip one-time elites and bosses when the goal is sustained income.
- Collect and count the payout. Record the total after each clear so you know the route’s real result rather than relying on enemy count.
- Rest immediately. Use the Lantern to revive the regular pack and restore health and Nephtoglobin.
- Stop when risk overtakes yield. If your death rate rises, bank the currency and switch to a safer route.
Troubleshooting: why an enemy may not be back
The enemy had red glowing eyes
That is the defining sign of an Enraged elite. It is not part of the repeatable regular-enemy pool, so resting will not revive it.
You are checking a boss arena
Bosses do not respawn from Lantern rests. A missing boss is expected behavior, not a failed reset.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou are looking for a Catalyst Clot
Clots are world pickups and generally one-time collectibles. Revisit a route for enemy kills, not to recreate a Clot you already collected.
You did not actually rest at the Lantern
Merely walking past or activating a Lantern is not the same as using its rest function. Complete the rest interaction, then return to the enemy area.
The payout differs from the guide
Published totals are build-specific. The route figures and progression numbers cited here come from PC launch data, Steam build 25907482, dated October 13, 2026. A later patch, another platform, a changed enemy balance, or a different route boundary can alter the result.
Version caveat for all published numbers
The 13,910-Catalyst Tribunal Square total, 8,945-Catalyst Old Mine total, enemy payout ranges, Surplus Amber percentages, Clot count, and leveling costs are reported measurements rather than timeless rules. The respawn rule itself is the stable mechanic described by the in-game tutorial: resting revives all non-boss enemies. For exact farming totals, verify your current version after major balance updates.
