Sometimes. A browser game may keep progress in cookies, local storage, cache, or another browser-held record, tying the save to one browser and device. Other games attach progress to an online account and can restore it on supported devices. There is no universal rule: closing a tab does not by itself tell you whether a save is permanent, portable, or recoverable.
Before clearing site data, changing browsers, using private browsing, or linking an account, check the particular game’s help and profile settings. The game or hosting platform decides what is saved, where it is saved, and how recovery works.

How browser games save progress
Browser games generally use one of two arrangements, although a game can combine them. The important question is whether the progress record lives only in your browser or is associated with an online profile.
Browser-local saves
A local save is stored by the website in the browser on your current device. Platform support pages use several terms for this arrangement:

- Cookies: Poki says guest progress is saved in browser cookies and describes progress without an account as stored locally in the browser. See its Poki FAQ.
- Local storage: Arkadium says most of its games save progress in the browser’s local storage. Local storage is a browser data store separate from cookies, even though support articles may discuss them together.
- Cache: Spil Games says unregistered progress is stored in the browser cache and recommends allowing cookies and local storage. A cache is not technically identical to a cookie or local storage, and the game’s own wording matters.
Whatever the storage type, the practical result is similar: the save is associated with that browser profile and device. Clearing the relevant site data, switching browsers, changing devices, or using a browser mode that does not retain data can make the progress unavailable.
Account-backed saves
Some games or platforms associate progress with an online account or profile. Poki says an optional account can store progress online and allow a player to continue on a computer, mobile device, or tablet. Arkadium identifies particular games that can attach progress to an online Arkadium profile when the player is signed in.
An account only provides portability when the specific game implements account-backed saving. Signing in to a hosting website does not automatically migrate every guest save, and an account may store only selected games or selected types of progress.

A game can remember completed levels or a profile score while still losing the current unfinished round when the tab closes. Some games save only after a level, puzzle, or match ends; others save continuously. Arkadium notes that different game types save different kinds and durations of progress. Look for wording such as “resume,” “continue,” “profile,” or “save” in the game itself rather than assuming every screen state is persistent.

What happens when you close the browser?
Closing a tab or browser normally does not delete a persistent cookie or local-storage entry. If the game has successfully written a local save, returning to the same game with the same browser profile may restore it. That is a possibility, not a guarantee: the game might save only at checkpoints, require cookies or local storage, or keep the current session only in memory.
For an account-backed game, closing the browser should not remove a server-side save, but you may need to sign in again. A signed-in account also cannot restore progress that the game never uploaded. If the save was still a guest record, it may remain tied to the original browser.
Why browser-game progress disappears
Site data was cleared
Browser privacy controls, “clear browsing data” commands, automatic cleanup utilities, and some security products can remove cookies, local storage, or cached records. Deleting data for one site can be enough to remove a local save while leaving other websites unaffected. Do not clear the game’s site data until you have checked its export, account, or recovery instructions.
You changed the browser or device
A local save in one browser profile is not automatically present in another browser, even on the same computer. It also will not normally follow you to a new computer, phone, or tablet. A synchronized browser account may sync some browser settings, but that should not be treated as a supported backup for a game unless the game explicitly says so.

Private or incognito browsing was used
Private browsing can prevent a save from being retained after the private window closes. Poki explicitly warns that private browsing can stop progress from saving. Individual browsers and games behave differently, so treat private mode as a possible cause rather than a universal explanation.
Cookies or storage were blocked
Cookie blockers, strict tracking protection, content blockers, and browser settings that disable site storage can prevent a game from writing or reading its save. Spil Games recommends enabling cookies and local storage for its site, while Poki identifies cookies as the location for guest progress. If a game repeatedly starts from the beginning, check the site’s permission settings before reinstalling anything.
The wrong account or profile is active
An account-backed save belongs to a particular login. Signing in with a different email, a different social-login method, or a separate platform profile can make the game appear empty. Sign out, then sign back in with the account that originally held the progress. Also check whether the game uses an in-game profile distinct from the hosting website account.

A completed level, high score, unlocked item, and unfinished match may have different save rules. A game may preserve permanent achievements but not a live round, or save only after a result screen. Check the game’s help text for the exact events that trigger saving.

Can you continue on another device?
Yes, but only when the game supports an online account or another explicit transfer method. The usual path is:
- On the original device, open the game’s account, profile, or settings screen.
- Confirm that you are signed in and that the visible progress is associated with that profile.
- Look for a status message, cloud icon, sync control, or save confirmation. Do not assume that merely creating an account uploads an existing guest save.
- On the new device, use the same game and the same account or profile method.
- Check that the expected level, score, or unlocks appear before deleting data from the old device.
Poki documents cross-device continuation for progress stored in a Poki account. Arkadium documents profile saves for particular games, not every game on its platform. Spil Games warns that unregistered progress can be lost when logging in, so read its instructions before attempting to convert a guest save.
Local saves and account saves compared

What to do before clearing cookies or changing devices
Use this checklist while the old progress is still visible:
- Open the game’s help page and search for “save,” “account,” “profile,” “export,” “backup,” or “lost progress.”
- Record the exact game title, platform, browser, and account currently in use.
- Check whether the game offers an explicit account-linking, export, or backup command.
- If linking a guest profile, read the confirmation screen carefully. It may ask whether to keep local progress or existing cloud progress.
- Finish an in-progress level or match if the game appears to save only at completion.
- Verify the destination account by signing in on another supported device or browser before deleting the original data.
- Do not rely on a generic browser backup or cleanup tool as a guaranteed way to recover a game save; the game controls the format and location.
How to diagnose missing progress
- Return to the original environment. Use the same device, browser, browser profile, and game URL first. This separates a portability problem from an actual deletion.
- Check permissions. Make sure cookies and site storage are allowed for the game. Temporarily review content-blocker and tracking-protection settings if the game’s support page identifies them as requirements.
- Check the account. Confirm the exact username, email, or sign-in provider. If the game has a profile selector, choose the profile that previously showed the progress.
- Restart after a normal save event. Complete a level or reach the game’s result screen, close the tab normally, and reopen it. This tests whether the game writes progress at a checkpoint.
- Look for a sync or recovery option. Account-backed games may require signing out and back in to refresh access. Follow the platform’s own recovery steps rather than deleting more data.
- Contact support with precise details. Include the game, device, browser, approximate last successful session, account identifier, and any displayed error. Do not send passwords or payment information.
If the original browser data was already erased, recovery may not be possible. Arkadium says most lost local saves cannot be restored by support, with a named exception for Word Hunt. That policy illustrates why checking instructions before clearing data is more effective than trying to reconstruct a deleted browser record afterward.

What happens when a guest save is linked to an account?
Linking can be beneficial, but it is not always a simple upload. A guest save on the device and an existing cloud save on the account may contain different levels, scores, or timestamps. The game must choose whether to keep the local record, keep the cloud record, merge them, or ask you to decide.
Google’s developer guidance for saved games explains that games should handle these conflicts deliberately and should not silently overwrite significant guest progress when linking to existing cloud progress. That guidance concerns developers and Google Play Games Services, not a claim that ordinary web games use that service. It is nevertheless a useful model for understanding why an account prompt may present a “keep this save” choice.
When a prompt appears, compare the displayed progress and choose deliberately. If no choice is offered and the progress matters, stop before confirming the link and consult the game’s support instructions.
What platform documentation can—and cannot—tell you
Official help pages are authoritative for their own platforms, not for every browser game. Poki’s FAQ covers its cookie-based guest saves and optional accounts across a large catalog; Poki reports more than 1,700 web games and over 100 million monthly players, figures supplied by the company and not measurements of save reliability. Spil Games explains its browser-cache behavior and cookie/local-storage requirement for unregistered play. Arkadium documents local-storage saves for most of its games and account saves for particular titles.
Those examples establish that multiple save systems exist. They do not establish how any unrelated game saves, how long a save is retained, or whether support can restore it. The game’s own help page and settings remain the deciding evidence.
