Do Belt-Drive E-Bikes Need Gears? How Internal-Gear Hubs Work

No. A belt-drive e-bike can use one fixed ratio, but the belt does not determine whether the bike has gears. Gearing is a separate choice. A single-speed belt bike can be excellent on relatively flat routes with modest loads; multiple ratios become valuable on hills, with cargo, in stop-and-go traffic, or whenever you want to keep your legs turning at a comfortable cadence while speed changes.

An internal-gear hub puts those ratios inside the rear hub. That keeps the belt-and-sprocket drive clean and removes the exposed derailleur and cassette found on many chain bikes. The trade-off is that the complete system—hub, sprockets, beltline, frame clearance and tension—must be designed to work together.

What “belt drive” and “gears” each mean

A belt drive describes how motor and pedal power reaches the rear wheel. A toothed carbon-reinforced belt engages matching front and rear sprockets. It is not the same component as a gear train, and it does not prescribe a gear count.

Gears describe the ratio between crank or motor speed and wheel speed. A low ratio makes climbing and starting easier; a high ratio lets the wheel turn farther for each pedal revolution. The same belt can therefore be used with one ratio, an external derailleur-style system designed for belt use, or an internal-gear hub.

Gates describes its belts as carbon-fiber-reinforced and says, “The need for lubrication is eliminated, reducing upkeep.” That means there is no chain oil to attract grit, but it does not mean the drive is maintenance-free. Correct sprocket alignment, belt tension, frame clearance and periodic inspection still matter.

When a single-speed belt e-bike is enough

Single-speed is the simplest arrangement: one front sprocket, one rear sprocket and no shifting mechanism. It is often suitable when the route, rider and load stay within a predictable range.

  • Mostly flat terrain: If gradients are mild, the motor can provide assistance without requiring a very low mechanical ratio.
  • Light loads: A rider carrying little luggage places less demand on the starting and climbing ratio than a cargo setup.
  • Consistent speeds: Commuters on steady roads may not need to change cadence frequently.
  • Low mechanical complexity: There is no derailleur, shifter cable or multi-ratio hub to adjust.

Single-speed does not automatically mean easier pedaling. The chosen ratio is a compromise: one that feels comfortable at cruising speed may feel heavy when starting on a slope. A motor can mask some of that load, but battery assistance cannot change the rider’s preferred cadence or remove every high-load start.

Why add gears to a belt-drive e-bike?

Multiple ratios expand the conditions in which the bike feels natural. A lower gear reduces the pedal force needed at the wheel during a climb or standing start. A higher gear prevents the rider from spinning uncomfortably fast when the bike is moving quickly or descending.

Hills and frequent starts

On a steep hill, a low ratio lets the rider contribute useful torque without forcing an awkwardly slow cadence. The same advantage appears when pulling away repeatedly at intersections, especially with a heavy bike or trailer. Internal hubs can also keep the gear protected from mud and impacts that would reach an exposed derailleur.

Cadence and motor behavior

E-bike motors and riders both operate most comfortably within a cadence range. Changing ratio lets you keep cadence steadier as road speed changes, instead of choosing between mashing a heavy gear and spinning a light one. The best range depends on the motor’s control strategy, wheel size, terrain, rider strength and total mass; there is no universal “correct” number of gears.

Loads and utility riding

Cargo, child seats, panniers and trailers increase the force required to accelerate and climb. A ratio that feels fine on an unloaded test ride can be inconvenient when the bike is loaded. For utility use, the useful question is not whether a belt can handle gears, but whether the selected hub range covers the steepest climb and the fastest normal cruising speed.

How an internal-gear hub works

An internal-gear hub encloses reduction stages inside the rear hub shell. The pedals and, on many e-bikes, the motor drive the hub input. Inside, planetary gear sets—sun gears, planet gears and ring gears—are coupled in different combinations. Selecting a combination changes the reduction ratio before torque reaches the wheel. Because the mechanism is sealed within the hub, the belt remains a simple, straight-running loop outside it.

A cable shifter, electronic actuator or an integrated e-bike control system selects the ratio. Shimano documents compatible e-bike systems that can select an optimum gear automatically. Automatic behavior is not inherent to every internal hub: it requires the specified hub, sensor, controller and software combination.

Some internal hubs permit shifting while stopped because the rider is selecting a mechanism inside the stationary hub rather than moving a chain across sprockets. The exact shift rules vary. A particular hub may require reduced pedal pressure, a brief pause or electronic coordination with the motor. Follow that model’s instructions instead of assuming every hub shifts identically.

Internal hub examples and gear-range figures

Gear range is the percentage difference between the lowest and highest ratios. The figures below are manufacturer specifications, not independent comparative tests.

Hub or system Published ratios Published overall range What the figure tells you
Shimano NEXUS INTER-5E 5 263% A mainstream five-ratio range intended for compatible e-bike applications; the specification comes from Shimano’s current product information.
Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 and E-14 14 526% for the E-14 A much wider fourteen-ratio spread; the 526% figure is reported by Rohloff AG in current E-14 product information.

A larger percentage does not by itself prove that one bike climbs better or is faster. Final performance also depends on the chosen front and rear sprocket sizes, wheel diameter, motor limits, rider input and total load. These hubs also require frame and control-system compatibility checks.

Belt drive versus chain and derailleur

Consideration Belt with internal hub Chain with derailleur
Cleanliness No chain lubricant is needed; the belt and enclosed hub keep the shifting mechanism relatively clean. Requires chain lubrication and cleaning, and the exposed cassette and derailleur can collect grit.
Gear choice Ratios are enclosed in the hub; shifting can be cable-operated or electronic, and some compatible e-bike systems offer automatic selection. Many external sprockets provide closely spaced ratios, but the chain must move across them while riding.
Shifting while stopped Some hubs allow it, subject to the model’s operating instructions. Usually requires the chain to be moving through the derailleur.
Installation demands Needs a belt-compatible frame, matched sprockets, correct beltline and controlled tension. Uses standard chain-compatible frame and derailleur mounting dimensions.
Exposure to damage The hub’s gears are enclosed; the belt has no derailleur cage hanging below the axle. Derailleur, chain and cassette are exposed to impacts, contamination and misalignment.

Neither layout is universally superior. A belt-and-hub bike prioritizes a clean drive and protected gearing, while a derailleur can offer a broad selection of closely spaced ratios with familiar service procedures.

Are belt-drive e-bikes good for hills?

They can be, provided the ratio range and motor system suit the hill. A single-speed model may climb a moderate grade if its ratio, motor torque and rider effort are appropriate, but it offers no way to select an easier mechanical gear when the slope steepens. A multi-ratio hub gives you that option while retaining the belt’s clean operation.

Before choosing a hill-going model, evaluate:

  • the steepest grade you regularly ride, not just the average route;
  • total system weight, including rider, battery, luggage and any trailer;
  • whether the motor supplies assistance at the cadence you can maintain;
  • the hub’s lowest ratio and the front/rear sprocket combination;
  • whether the manufacturer permits the intended motor torque and belt system together.

Use a low ratio before the climb becomes difficult rather than waiting until the motor and rider are already heavily loaded. If the control system shifts automatically, confirm how it responds to cadence, torque and stops; automatic selection is specific to the compatible Shimano or other system, not a universal feature of internal hubs.

Can you replace a chain with a belt?

Usually not as a simple parts swap. A belt is toothed and must run on matching sprockets. The frame must also provide a way to install a continuous belt—commonly a split in a seatstay or chainstay—because a belt cannot be opened like a chain and threaded through a closed rear triangle.

Gates’ e-bike integration guidance calls for selecting the rear hub, front sprocket assembly, rear sprocket and target beltline as a matched system. Rohloff’s OEM guidance likewise lists installation constraints for belt-drive SPEEDHUB builds. A conventional chain bike may lack the frame opening, sprocket spacing, hub interface or tension adjustment needed for a safe conversion.

Checks before buying a replacement belt

  • Read the markings on the existing belt and record its tooth count and specified length.
  • Identify the exact sprocket family and tooth profile; a visually similar sprocket may not be compatible.
  • Verify the beltline—the distance and alignment between front and rear sprockets.
  • Confirm that the frame has adequate clearance and the required belt-removal opening.
  • Check the hub model, axle hardware and permitted belt-drive configuration.

Do not infer belt size from wheel diameter alone. Two bikes with the same wheel size can use different crank positions, chainstay lengths, sprocket sizes and belt lengths.

How to tension an e-bike belt

Tension is the controlled force that keeps the toothed belt engaged without excessive load on bearings and hub components. Too little tension can allow tooth skipping; too much can add drag, noise or premature wear. The correct value is system-specific.

  1. Make the bike safe. Switch the e-bike off, remove the battery if the manufacturer instructs you to do so, and support the frame so the rear wheel can move without the bike falling.
  2. Find the adjustment method. Depending on the frame, tension is set with sliding dropouts, eccentric bottom-bracket hardware or another manufacturer-specified mechanism. Do not loosen axle or dropout fasteners without knowing how the wheel is retained.
  3. Clean and inspect first. Look for damaged teeth, frayed belt cords, embedded stones, cracked sprocket flanges or a belt that walks sideways. Correct those problems before measuring tension.
  4. Use the specified gauge or procedure. A Gates-compatible tensioning tool or gauge can be useful, but use the value and measurement method supplied for your exact belt and frame. A finger “feel” test is not a calibrated measurement.
  5. Align the rear wheel and beltline. Adjust both sides evenly so the wheel remains centered and the belt tracks in the middle of both sprockets.
  6. Secure and recheck. Tighten fasteners to the frame or hub manufacturer’s torque specification, rotate the cranks through several revolutions, and measure again at multiple belt positions.
  7. Test under light load. Apply motor power gradually and listen for skipping, clicking or rubbing. Stop if the belt moves laterally or jumps teeth, then correct alignment and tension before riding normally.

Never substitute a generic chain-tension rule for the belt manufacturer’s specification. The correct setting varies with belt construction, center distance, sprocket sizes and the frame’s adjustment system.

Maintenance and troubleshooting

Routine checks

  • Wipe dirt and grit from the belt with the cleaning method approved by its manufacturer; do not apply chain oil.
  • Inspect belt teeth and carbon cords for cuts, missing material or exposed reinforcement.
  • Check that the belt tracks centrally and does not rub the frame.
  • Look for loose sprockets, damaged teeth and unusual hub play.
  • Follow the hub maker’s service intervals for oil changes, seals or electronic calibration where applicable.

If the belt skips teeth

Common causes are insufficient tension, a misaligned rear wheel, worn or damaged sprockets, contamination between teeth or a load beyond the system’s design. Stop riding under high motor power, inspect the belt and sprockets, then measure tension with the specified method. Replacing only the belt may not solve a worn-sprocket problem.

If the belt walks toward one side

Sideways tracking usually points to beltline misalignment, uneven dropout adjustment, a bent sprocket or a rear wheel that is not seated squarely. Do not “fix” tracking by overtightening one side. Re-center the wheel and verify alignment through a full crank rotation.

If shifting is noisy or incomplete

Reduce pedal pressure while shifting unless the hub instructions say otherwise. Check cable routing, electronic battery state and the control system’s compatibility. A hub that shifts at a standstill may still require the cranks to be unloaded; a jammed or repeatedly incomplete shift needs professional service rather than force.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing the right setup

Choose a single-speed belt system when your route is mostly flat, your load is predictable and simplicity matters more than cadence flexibility. Choose an internal-gear hub when you regularly climb, carry substantial weight, start on slopes or want protected, sometimes automatic shifting. Compare the usable lowest and highest ratios—not just the number of gears—and confirm that the motor, hub, belt and frame are approved as one system.

For any purchase or repair, obtain the exact belt specification and hub model from the bike’s markings or manufacturer documentation. A correct belt installation is a matched mechanical system; treating it as a generic chain replacement is the fastest route to noise, skipping or damage.
