Short answer: A Magic Keyboard can be paired with compatible Apple devices, but Apple does not document a built-in button or key for switching the keyboard directly among several paired hosts. For a Mac-and-iPad workspace, Apple’s separate Universal Control feature can let a Mac’s keyboard and pointer work across nearby devices.
Compatibility is not the same as switching
Apple’s specifications for the Magic Keyboard (USB-C) list compatible devices and minimum operating-system versions. Those details apply to that USB-C model, introduced in 2024; they should not be assumed to cover every older Magic Keyboard. A device being compatible means it can use the keyboard, not that the keyboard offers a quick way to switch among saved Bluetooth hosts.
The USB-C Magic Keyboard connects over Bluetooth and has a USB-C port. Apple lists these minimum software requirements for this model:
- Mac: macOS 15.1 or later
- iPad: iPadOS 14.5 or later
- iPhone: iOS 14.5 or later
- Apple Vision Pro: the latest visionOS
Check the specification page for the exact compatible device models as well as the OS requirement. An older keyboard may have different requirements.

What happens when you pair it directly?
Pairing connects the keyboard to a device; reconnecting restores that connection when the keyboard is turned on or back in range. Apple’s setup guidance does not describe an onboard multi-host switch that lets you tap a control to change the keyboard’s Bluetooth connection between devices.
Mac
A Magic Keyboard supplied with a new Mac should already be paired and reconnect when switched on. To set up or re-pair a supported wireless keyboard, Apple’s Mac setup instructions say to connect it to the Mac with a supported cable, turn it on, allow the USB connection to pair it, and then unplug it for wireless use. Apple says to check that it appears in Bluetooth settings. These steps are for supported rechargeable wireless accessories; do not assume they apply to every legacy keyboard.

iPhone
For iPhone, Apple says to charge and turn on the keyboard, enable Bluetooth in Settings, then select it under Other Devices. There is an important limitation: Apple’s iPhone pairing guide says, “If Magic Keyboard is already paired with another device, you must unpair them before you can connect Magic Keyboard to your iPhone.” That is not the same as switching instantly between two active host pairings.
Apple says the keyboard disconnects when switched off or moved out of Bluetooth range—approximately 33 feet (10 meters)—and may reconnect when turned on or brought back into range and a key is tapped. This is Apple’s approximate guidance, not a guaranteed range in every setting.

Use Universal Control for a Mac-and-iPad desk
If the goal is to type across a Mac and iPad on the same desk, Universal Control is Apple’s documented option. It lets a Mac’s keyboard, mouse, or trackpad control supported nearby Macs and iPads. Move the pointer across the edge of one screen to begin using the adjacent device, or choose a connected display. This is a system feature; it does not mean the Magic Keyboard itself is switching its Bluetooth pairing.
Apple’s Universal Control guide lists these requirements:

Universal Control supports one Mac plus up to two additional supported Mac or iPad devices. These are Universal Control requirements, separate from the Bluetooth and operating-system compatibility requirements for pairing a particular Magic Keyboard.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Which approach fits your setup?
| Approach | What connects | How you move between devices | Key conditions |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct Bluetooth pairing | The Magic Keyboard connects to a device. | Pair or reconnect to the host. For iPhone, unpair it from another device first. | Keyboard generation, supported device and OS, and Bluetooth pairing. |
| Universal Control | A Mac’s keyboard and pointer work across nearby Macs and iPads. | Move the pointer across a screen edge or select a connected display. | Supported devices and OS versions, same Apple Account with two-factor authentication, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Handoff, and proximity. |
For a Mac and iPhone, Apple’s documented direct-pairing instructions require removing the existing pairing before connecting to the iPhone. For a Mac and iPad at one desk, Universal Control may fit if both devices meet its requirements. For a keyboard moving among unrelated or non-Apple hosts, Apple’s cited guidance does not establish a convenient multi-host switching method. Check the specifications and support instructions for your particular keyboard generation rather than assuming every Magic Keyboard behaves identically.
