Yes—but none of these features is universal. Heroic, Playnite and GOG’s desktop tools handle different parts of the experience, while the store, individual game and operating system decide what actually works. Heroic offers cloud-save synchronization and a controller-oriented interface; Playnite provides a strong fullscreen controller front end but keeps its own library data locally; GOG provides the clearest offline route through DRM-free games and downloadable installers, with cloud saves available only for qualifying titles.
What “support” means in practice
A launcher can support a feature without guaranteeing it for every game. Cloud saves require cooperation from the store service and the game’s save-file layout. Offline play depends on licensing checks, DRM, installed dependencies and whether the game needs an online connection. Controller support may cover only the launcher menus, while the game itself still needs compatible input handling.

That distinction explains why two games installed through the same launcher can behave differently. One may upload saves and start without a network; another may have no cloud-save implementation, require an online check, or accept only keyboard and mouse input. Compatibility layers such as Wine or Proton add another variable on Linux and macOS.

How cloud saves actually work
Heroic: a synchronization feature, not a universal guarantee
Heroic advertises “Sync saves with the cloud.” In practical terms, the launcher can request save files from a supported store and synchronize them for a compatible game. The store still has to expose the save data, and the game must write saves in a way the service recognizes. A title that never implemented cloud saves cannot gain them merely by being added to Heroic.

Operating-system and compatibility-layer details matter. On Linux or macOS, a Windows game may run through Wine or another compatibility layer. The path that the game uses for its save files can differ from the native Windows path, and a game update can change that path. Before switching machines, start the game, make a new save, exit normally and allow the launcher to finish its synchronization. If the launcher reports a conflict, do not blindly choose the newest timestamp: compare the local and remote files first, because a newer but empty or newly created profile can overwrite useful progress.
Playnite: library synchronization is not save synchronization
Playnite is primarily a library front end. Its documentation states that library data is stored exclusively on the PC. That data includes the catalog and Playnite’s own configuration; it is not a universal copy of every game’s save files. Playnite launches titles through integrations and plugins, so save behavior remains owned by the connected store and the game.
You can back up Playnite’s library separately, but that does not make a game’s progress portable. For a migration, identify the save location and the store’s own cloud feature, then copy or synchronize the save files using a method appropriate to that title. Treat Playnite’s catalog backup and the game-save backup as two different jobs.

GOG documents automatic cloud synchronization when cloud saves are enabled and supported: files are synchronized every time the game is launched or closed. That wording is important. The service does not promise cloud saves for every game in the catalog.
GOG’s quality rules limit eligibility. Cloud saves are possible only for titles that store saves in a separate subfolder and whose total save-file quota does not exceed 200 MB. A game can therefore display no cloud-save option even though other games from the same store synchronize normally. Games using unusual save layouts, oversized profiles or unsupported online systems may fall outside the rules.

How to verify cloud-save support before you rely on it
- Check the game’s store listing. Look for a cloud-save indicator and read any notes about platform or edition limits. Do not infer support from the launcher alone.
- Confirm the account and store. A title installed through one storefront may use a different save service from the same title purchased elsewhere.
- Create a test save. Launch the game, make a clearly named or dated save, exit through the normal menu and wait for synchronization to complete.
- Test restoration on the target device. Install or launch the game on the second PC, allow the sync process to finish and verify that the test save appears before moving important progress.
- Keep a manual copy. Cloud synchronization is not the same as versioned backup. Retain a local copy before changing operating systems, compatibility layers or game versions.
When a conflict appears, stop launching the game repeatedly. Repeated starts and exits can cause the wrong file set to become the newest remote version. Preserve both copies, determine which contains the desired progress and then restore deliberately.
Offline play: the most reliable path
Why DRM-free installers are different
GOG provides browser-downloadable offline backup installers. The support procedure is to choose DOWNLOAD OFFLINE BACKUP GAME INSTALLERS, save the setup files, run them on the target computer and launch the installed executable without the app. For a DRM-free title that supports this mode, the game can run without Galaxy or an internet connection.

Multiplayer matchmaking, cloud synchronization, achievements, news, friends lists and other online services require a connection. A game can be fully playable offline while its connected extras are unavailable.
Other stores and launchers
Heroic can manage installed games, but offline behavior is inherited from the underlying store and game. Some titles start after the launcher has cached credentials; others perform a license check or depend on an online service at launch. Compatibility layers may also need a first-run download of runtimes, shaders or redistributables, so test offline operation before travelling.
Playnite does not change those rules. It can start an installed executable, but the integrated store may still require its own client, cached authentication or a network check. A Playnite shortcut is not proof that the title is DRM-free.

Offline preparation checklist
- Install and start the game once while connected.
- Complete first-run setup, including graphics settings and any required redistributables.
- Sign in to the relevant store and let its credentials or offline mode be established.
- Download patches, language packs and downloadable content you will need.
- For GOG titles, keep the offline installer files on an external drive or another storage location.
- Disconnect the network and test a complete launch, loading a save and starting a new game.
- Record which online features disappear so you know what to expect.
If the game fails offline, reconnect and read the exact error. A missing executable dependency, expired cached authorization and an online-only game require different fixes; reinstalling the launcher will not solve all three.
Controller support: launcher navigation versus game input
Heroic’s controller-oriented interface
Heroic describes a full-screen, controller-friendly interface designed for television and Steam Deck-style use. This makes browsing, selecting and launching games practical from a sofa. It does not certify that every game accepts a controller once launched. Input support still depends on the title, its controller API and the operating system or compatibility layer.
Playnite Fullscreen Mode
Playnite’s Fullscreen Mode offers controller support and is recommended for a couch or console-like experience. It is especially useful when the PC is connected to a TV and the launcher itself must be operated without a mouse. After a game starts, however, Playnite’s role is largely finished: the game’s own input implementation determines button mapping, vibration, hot-plug behavior and support for multiple controllers.
GOG and title-specific support
Controller compatibility in the GOG ecosystem is title-specific. Store pages identify support per game, so check the individual listing rather than assuming that a modern controller will work everywhere. Older games may require an in-game setting, a community configuration or a wired connection; those requirements belong to the game, not to the launcher.
Controller troubleshooting by symptom
The launcher does not respond
- Switch to the launcher’s full-screen mode, then reconnect the controller.
- Use a wired connection to rule out Bluetooth pairing or battery problems.
- Disconnect other gamepads and input devices that may be taking focus.
- Check whether the operating system detects button presses before changing game settings.
The launcher works but the game does not
- Verify controller support on the game’s store page.
- Open the game’s own input menu and select the correct device or layout.
- Try launching through the store integration the game expects; some titles handle input differently when started from a direct executable.
- On Linux or macOS, test the same title under the recommended compatibility layer and note whether the problem appears only there.
Buttons are duplicated or mapped incorrectly
Multiple translation layers can expose one physical controller as two virtual devices. Close other remapping utilities, remove duplicate profiles and test with one input method at a time. Save a working profile before experimenting with alternative layouts.

Operating-system and compatibility considerations
Windows
Playnite is Windows-focused and can aggregate installed libraries through integrations. The main risks are store-specific authentication, games that require their original client and titles that run only while an online service is available.
Linux and macOS
Heroic is the more natural fit when the goal is a shared Epic, GOG and Amazon library across Windows, Linux and macOS. On non-Windows systems, verify the game’s compatibility layer, required runtime and anti-cheat status before assuming that a cloud-saved title will launch. A synchronized save is useful only if the game can read it on the target platform.
Handheld and television setups
A controller-friendly full-screen interface reduces the need for a keyboard, but initial installation, account sign-in and troubleshooting are still easier with one nearby. Keep a mouse or keyboard available for launchers that expose an error dialog outside their gamepad interface.
Choosing the right option
Choose Heroic when you need a cross-store front end
Heroic is the strongest fit for a unified Epic, GOG and Amazon library on Windows, Linux or macOS, especially when cloud-save features and couch-friendly navigation are priorities. Confirm each game’s store support, compatibility layer and anti-cheat requirements before moving a save between systems.

Choose Playnite when library organization comes first
Playnite suits Windows users who want a customizable catalog and reliable controller navigation in Fullscreen Mode. Plan your save strategy separately: Playnite stores its library locally and does not provide a universal cloud-save service.
Choose GOG offline installers when independence from a launcher matters
GOG’s offline installers are the clearest choice when you want to install and play DRM-free titles without Galaxy or a live connection. Accept that cloud saves and online services remain conditional, and maintain your own backup if the game does not qualify for automatic synchronization.
A practical decision framework
Use the following order when evaluating a specific game:
- Store coverage: Is the game available through the launcher or integration you intend to use?
- Save ownership: Does the store list cloud saves, and does the game meet the service’s file and quota rules?
- Offline licensing: Can it launch without a network, or does it need a cached client or recurring check?
- Platform compatibility: Does the title run natively, or through Wine/Proton or another compatibility layer?
- Controller requirements: Does the game list controller support, and is a specific layout or remapper required?
- Recovery plan: Do you have an installer, a local save copy and a way to restore progress if synchronization fails?
Answering those questions per title prevents the most common mistake: treating a launcher’s headline feature as a guarantee for every game in the library.
Common failure modes and recovery
A cloud save is missing
Check that the game was closed normally, the correct account is active and the title actually supports cloud saves. Look for a local save in the game’s documented folder and preserve it before reinstalling. If the game uses a compatibility layer, confirm that the layer is pointing to the same prefix and save path as before.
The wrong save overwrote the right one
Stop launching the title, disconnect synchronization if the launcher permits it and locate both local and remote copies. Restore the desired local file first, then launch once while connected and verify the resulting remote state. Without version history, a separate manual backup may be the only recovery source.
An offline game asks for a connection
Reconnect, complete any pending first-run setup and check whether the title is DRM-free or requires the store client. Download missing dependencies and test offline again. If the game’s design requires an online service, no alternative launcher can remove that requirement.
A controller works in menus but not in gameplay
Confirm title-specific support, select the controller inside the game and remove competing remappers. If the problem appears only through Wine or Proton, compare a different supported compatibility version and retain the configuration that works.
Bottom line
Alternative PC launchers can cover all three needs, but only in combination with the right store and game. Heroic offers cloud synchronization and a controller-friendly full-screen experience; Playnite excels as a Windows library front end with controller navigation but leaves save management to each integration; GOG’s DRM-free catalog and offline installers provide the most dependable disconnected play. Verify cloud-save eligibility, offline licensing, platform compatibility and controller support for every title before relying on a launcher as your only copy of a game or save.
