Yes. Aircraft emissions released during cruise can contribute to ground-level air pollution after winds transport them and atmospheric reactions transform them. A 2010 model-based study, reported by Chemistry World, estimated that cruise emissions accounted for 80% of the modeled health impact of aircraft emissions—about 8,000 early deaths annually. Those are historical estimates from a model, not a current count of deaths or a measurement of aviation’s present-day impact.
What the 2010 study estimated
Chemistry World reported on 7 September 2010 that MIT-based scientists combined an emissions inventory with a chemistry transport model to estimate how aircraft pollution affects people at ground level. The report attributed two headline figures to the study: cruise emissions accounted for 80% of the modeled total health impact of aircraft emissions, corresponding to around 8,000 early deaths per year.

Both figures describe the study’s modeled estimate as relayed in that 2010 report. They should not be read as observed deaths, a current annual toll, or a direct measurement of today’s aviation emissions and health effects. The primary paper is identified as Environmental Science & Technology, DOI 10.1021/es101325r; the report does not provide enough detail to independently assess the model’s assumptions or uncertainty.

Take-off and landing emissions are released near the surface, where people may be exposed relatively directly. Cruise emissions are released at altitude, but that does not mean they remain there: atmospheric transport can carry pollutants, while chemical reactions can create secondary aerosols that later affect breathing-zone air.

The report discussed fine particulate matter (PM2.5, particles smaller than 2.5 micrometres), including black and organic carbon, as well as aerosols formed through reactions involving nitric and sulfuric acids. These pathways make cruise emissions relevant to air quality as well as to the aircraft’s climate effects. The study’s reported health estimate concerns air-pollution impacts, not simply carbon dioxide or climate forcing.
Landing and take-off versus cruise
| Flight phase | Where emissions are released | Relevance to ground-level air, as described in the 2010 report |
|---|---|---|
| Landing and take-off (LTO) | Near the ground | Can contribute to local air pollution around airports. |
| Cruise | At altitude | Can affect breathing-zone air after atmospheric transport and chemical transformation; the study attributed 80% of its modeled aircraft-emissions health impact to this phase. |
Lead researcher Steven Barrett described the earlier assumption this way: “We used to assume that climate was due to full flight emissions and air quality was just due to the landing and take-off emissions.” Environmental health expert Frank Kelly of King’s College London added: “What this paper’s tending to say is that they can in certain circumstances influence our breathing zone, and also influence the sort of atmospheric chemistry that’s going on.” Both quotations appeared in Chemistry World’s 2010 report.

What the report said about geography
The report said the model placed the largest health burden in Asia despite comparatively lower air traffic than in the United States. It also described a rough transport pattern from Europe toward China. These are results attributed to the historical model in a 2010 news report, not an independently established current ranking of aviation-related health impacts by region.
Why the finding matters for policy
If air-quality assessments count only emissions released close to the ground, they can miss a pathway by which aircraft pollution at altitude contributes to exposure later and elsewhere. The report’s policy implication was to consider cruise emissions in air-quality regulation and in efforts to reduce total aircraft emissions. That is distinct from assessing aviation’s climate impact, even though the same flight emissions can matter for both questions.
