Usually, no. Active (also called powered) speakers contain their own power amplifiers, so you normally connect a source directly to the speaker and do not add a stereo amplifier or receiver. A separate DAC is optional when the speaker or source already provides suitable digital conversion. A separate preamp is generally unnecessary for line-level sources; the important exception is a turntable whose cartridge signal has not been raised to line level by a built-in phono preamp.
What “active” or “powered” speakers actually include
An active speaker has one or more power-amplifier stages built into the speaker system. Depending on the design, the electronics may be housed in one cabinet and connected to the other with a supplied speaker cable, or each cabinet may contain its own amplification. The practical consequence is the same: the speaker system expects a source signal, mains power, or both. It does not expect the high-power speaker output produced by a separate amplifier.

This differs from passive speakers, which need an external integrated amplifier, stereo receiver, or power amplifier to increase a line-level signal enough to drive their drivers. With an active pair, adding another power amplifier is not an upgrade path; it is a signal-connection error unless the manufacturer explicitly provides a compatible line-level architecture.
“Powered” describes the built-in amplification, not every feature the model may have. One model may accept only analog RCA or 3.5 mm input, while another may add USB, optical, Bluetooth, HDMI ARC, a subwoofer output, a remote volume control, or balanced XLR connections. Those differences determine which source components you need.

Do active speakers need a separate amplifier?
No. The built-in amplifier is the reason active speakers can be connected directly to a phone, computer, streamer, television, or other compatible source. Audioengine describes its powered models this way: the amplifiers are built in, so a separate power amplifier is not required for normal operation.
What you connect instead
Connect the source’s supported output to the speaker’s matching input, then connect the speaker system to AC power. An analog source should feed a line-level input. A digital source can feed a USB, optical, Bluetooth, HDMI ARC, or other digital input only if that input is present on the speaker. The speaker then performs the remaining amplification internally.
Why a receiver is normally unnecessary
A stereo receiver combines source switching, volume control, and a power amplifier. Active speakers already supply the power-amplifier portion, and many include basic source selection and volume control. A receiver therefore adds hardware you may not need. It can still be useful as a source switcher or control center when it offers a suitable line-level or preamp output, but its amplified speaker terminals must not be used.
Do active speakers need a separate DAC?
Only the signal path determines that. Digital audio must be converted to analog somewhere before the speaker amplifier can use it. If the powered speaker has a USB or optical input, its internal DAC performs that conversion. If you send Bluetooth audio, the speaker also handles the required wireless decoding and digital-to-analog conversion internally.
When the speaker’s internal DAC is sufficient
- A computer is connected to the speaker’s USB input and the speaker is selected as the computer’s audio output.
- A television or streamer is connected to a supported optical or HDMI ARC input.
- A phone or computer is using the speaker’s Bluetooth input.
In each case, adding a second DAC is unnecessary because the speaker already accepts the digital stream and converts it before amplification.

When an external DAC can help
An external DAC is an optional alternative when the source provides a poor analog output, such as a computer with audible electrical noise, or when you specifically prefer the connections or conversion stage of an external unit. In that arrangement, connect the computer to the DAC digitally, then connect the DAC’s analog line output to the active speaker’s analog input. The speaker remains the power amplifier; the external DAC only handles conversion.
If your speakers have only analog inputs, a USB DAC for powered speakers can be a practical way to obtain a cleaner line-level output from a computer. It is not a requirement for powered speakers as a category. Check the speaker’s input specifications before buying one: an optical-only speaker cannot accept USB directly, and an analog-only model cannot receive a digital signal without an intervening converter.

Do active speakers need a separate preamp?
Usually not. A preamp prepares and controls a low-level source signal: it may provide volume control, input switching, or the correct gain for a particular source. Phones, computers, streamers, CD players, and most televisions already provide a line-level output that active speakers can accept directly. Many powered speakers also include their own volume and input controls.
The turntable exception: phono level versus line level
A conventional turntable cartridge produces a much lower phono-level signal and requires the correct equalization and gain before it can feed a normal line input. If the turntable has no built-in phono preamp, place an external phono preamp for turntable between the turntable and the powered speaker:
- Connect the turntable’s audio leads to the phono preamp input. Attach the turntable’s ground wire to the preamp ground terminal when the equipment provides one.
- Connect the preamp’s line-level output to the active speaker’s RCA or other analog line input.
- Select the speaker’s analog input and set the turntable and speaker volumes conservatively before playback.
If the turntable includes a phono preamp, set its output to LINE (not PHONO, if a switch is provided) and connect it directly to the speaker’s line input. Do not run a signal that has already been converted to line level through a second phono stage; that can produce excessive gain and incorrect equalization.

How to connect common setups safely
Computer using analog output
- Plug the computer’s headphone or line output into the speaker’s matching analog input.
- Select that input on the speaker.
- Set the computer volume to a moderate level and use the speaker’s control for normal listening, if it has one.
If you hear buzzing, hiss, or interference, try a different computer output or insert an external USB DAC. This changes the conversion and grounding path without adding a power amplifier.

Computer using USB or optical
- Connect the computer to the speaker’s USB or optical input with the appropriate cable.
- Choose the speaker or its digital input as the operating system’s output device.
- Select the corresponding input on the speaker and confirm that its volume is not muted.
No separate DAC is needed in this configuration because conversion occurs inside the speaker. If the model lacks the digital input your computer provides, use an external DAC with an analog output or use a supported analog connection instead.
Phone or tablet over Bluetooth
- Put the active speaker into Bluetooth pairing mode according to its controls.
- Select the speaker in the phone or tablet’s Bluetooth settings.
- Start playback and adjust volume from the source or speaker.
The wireless link carries digital audio; the powered speaker performs the conversion and amplification. A separate amplifier is not part of this setup.
Turntable with a built-in phono stage
- Set the turntable’s output switch to LINE when the model provides a choice.
- Connect its line output to the powered speaker’s analog input.
- Select that input and begin with a low volume.
If the turntable is left in PHONO mode, the signal may be extremely quiet because it has not been raised to line level.
Turntable without a phono stage
- Connect the turntable to an external phono preamp.
- Connect the preamp’s line output to the active speaker.
- Use the speaker’s analog input and adjust volume normally.
The phono preamp is the only additional gain stage required in this typical chain; adding a separate power amplifier would still be incorrect.

Can an AV receiver be used with active speakers?
Yes, but only through a line-level path. Use the receiver’s RCA preamp output, zone output, or another output explicitly designed to feed an external powered speaker. Select sources and control volume on the receiver if its output supports those functions.
Never connect an active speaker input to the receiver’s amplified speaker terminals—the posts intended for bare speaker wire or banana plugs. Those terminals carry power-amplified speaker-level output. Audioengine warns that sending this output into a powered speaker can cause damage, and its support guidance gives the same warning for stereo receivers and power amplifiers.
Receiver connection checklist
- Identify an output labeled PRE OUT, LINE OUT, ZONE OUT, or equivalent; consult the receiver manual for whether its level is fixed or variable.
- Use the receiver output and the speaker’s analog input, not the receiver’s speaker binding posts.
- Start with both devices at low volume to avoid a sudden high-level signal.
- If the receiver has no suitable line-level output, do not use an adapter that merely changes the connector shape; choose a proper line output or a different source-switching method.
What to check before buying extra equipment
Read the exact powered-speaker manual rather than assuming all active models share the same inputs. Confirm these points:
- Signal compatibility: Does the source provide phono-level, line-level, USB, optical, Bluetooth, HDMI ARC, or balanced XLR, and does the speaker accept that format?
- Conversion location: Will the source, an external DAC, or the speaker perform digital-to-analog conversion?
- Control: Does the speaker include volume and input selection, or do you need a preamp or receiver for several analog sources?
- Expansion: Is there a subwoofer output, headphone output, multiple inputs, or balanced connectivity for your intended system?
- Output safety: Are you looking at a genuine line-level or preamp output rather than an amplified speaker output?
Features vary even within one manufacturer. Audioengine’s A5+ documentation, for example, identifies amplification in the left speaker and describes pairing the system with its D1 DAC for desktop use. That example illustrates why the model’s own manual matters more than the word “powered” on a product page.

Troubleshooting connection problems
No sound from any source
- Verify that the active speaker is powered on and that the correct input is selected.
- Check both ends of the signal cable and test a known-good source or cable.
- For USB or optical, confirm that the computer or television is outputting to the connected device rather than its internal speakers.
- For Bluetooth, disconnect other paired devices and pair again.
Turntable is very quiet
The turntable is probably outputting phono level into a line input. Engage its built-in phono stage and select LINE, or add an external phono preamp between the turntable and speaker.

Sound is distorted or unexpectedly loud
Check for two gain stages or an incorrect output. A turntable with an internal phono preamp should not also feed a second phono input. A receiver’s amplified speaker output must never feed an active speaker. Reduce levels on the source and speaker before reconnecting.
Hum or computer noise
Try the speaker’s digital input, a different analog output, or an external USB DAC. Keep signal cables away from power adapters and verify that the source is delivering line level. If a turntable is involved, attach its ground wire as specified by the phono preamp or speaker manufacturer.
One speaker works and the other does not
Inspect the cable linking the two cabinets and confirm that it is connected to the correct terminals. Because some designs place the amplifier in only one cabinet, a loose inter-speaker connection can mute the other channel even when the source and powered cabinet are operating.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsBottom line for a system upgrade
Start with the shortest compatible signal path: source to the active speaker. Add a DAC only when you need a digital input the speaker lacks, want to bypass a noisy source output, or have a specific reason to use an external converter. Add a preamp when you need source switching or control that the speakers do not provide, or when a turntable needs phono-to-line conversion. Do not add a separate power amplifier, and never feed an active speaker from an amplifier’s speaker terminals.
