Sometimes—but not automatically. A video’s captions on its regular YouTube upload do not necessarily carry over when a 24/7 service plays that video inside a continuous live stream. YouTube’s live caption workflow requires captions to be sent to the live stream, and support for passing through each video’s caption track depends on the service.
First, identify which version of the video you mean
There are three separate caption situations: the original prerecorded upload, that video playing as part of a continuous live broadcast, and the recording saved after the broadcast ends. A caption track available in one situation does not establish that it will be available in the others.
- Original YouTube upload: YouTube may create automatic captions for eligible videos, and the owner can add captions or subtitles.
- Video inside a 24/7 live stream: Captions must be delivered to the live stream through YouTube’s live-caption workflow. The source upload’s captions are not guaranteed to pass through.
- Saved live recording: YouTube says live automatic captions do not remain after the stream ends. It generates new captions through the VOD process, and those may differ from the live captions.
How captions work on prerecorded YouTube uploads
For a normal uploaded video, creators can add captions by uploading a timed caption file, submitting transcript text for auto-sync, or entering captions manually in the subtitle editor. YouTube may also use speech recognition to create automatic captions for long-form videos and Shorts, depending on language availability and the audio and processing conditions. See YouTube’s automatic captioning guidance and instructions for adding subtitles and captions.
Automatic captions are not guaranteed and may take time to appear. Accuracy can be affected by pronunciation, accents, dialects, background noise, overlapping speakers, and other audio conditions. Review captions before relying on them, especially for names, lyrics, specialist terms, or content where precise wording matters.

What changes when a service plays the video as a live stream?
A 24/7 streaming service sends a broadcast to YouTube Live; that is a different caption path from the source video’s ordinary upload. YouTube’s live instructions say, “To add captions to your live stream, you need to send captions to YouTube.” Its documented options include embedded EIA 608/CEA 708 captions or supported caption software. The embedded workflow supports one caption track on YouTube, even though the 608/708 standard supports more. See YouTube’s live caption requirements.
Therefore, having captions on each source upload is not enough to conclude that viewers will see selectable captions on the live broadcast. The service’s playout system must handle the caption data and deliver it to YouTube as part of the live stream. Captions burned into the picture are different: they appear visually in the video rather than as a selectable caption track.

What to verify with your 24/7 service
Ask the provider about its current handling of captions before choosing it or scheduling a broadcast. YouTube’s documentation describes the platform workflows, but it does not establish what any particular third-party service transmits.
- Does the service pass caption data from each prerecorded asset into its live encoder and stream?
- Does it support embedded captions, separate caption files, or both? Ask which formats and workflow it accepts.
- Will captions appear as a selectable track in the YouTube player, or are they burned into the video image?
- Which languages and how many caption tracks can it send for a stream?
- Does the saved broadcast receive a separate VOD caption track, and does the provider preserve or supply any caption files for that archive?
- Can it confirm the behavior on a private or unlisted test stream before you rely on captions in a public broadcast?
These are verification questions, not features you can assume every 24/7 service offers. Test the live player and the saved recording separately; success on the source upload does not confirm either result.

Live automatic captions and the saved recording
YouTube documents live automatic captions for individual streams in English through its feature workflow, subject to availability and stream conditions. They are not a substitute for verifying caption-track passthrough from prerecorded assets. When the stream ends, live automatic captions do not remain on the video; YouTube generates new captions through its VOD process, which can produce a different result. Check YouTube’s automatic caption guidance for current availability and limitations.
For viewers, the caption control only offers a track if one exists for the video being watched. YouTube’s caption controls guidance explains that there may be no selectable captions when the owner has not supplied them and YouTube has not automatically added them.
