DNS vs. DoH vs. DoT: What’s the Difference and Which Should You Use?

Use encrypted DNS when you want to protect queries between your device and a trusted recursive resolver. Choose DNS over HTTPS (DoH) when you need protection in one browser or application; choose DNS over TLS (DoT) when you want an operating-system or network-level setting and your platform supports it. Neither option makes the resolver unable to see your queries, turns DNS into a VPN, or guarantees that every destination is hidden from your network provider.

The right choice depends on scope, authentication, network policy and the resolver’s privacy practices—not on a universal claim that one protocol is always faster or more private.

What DNS does before encryption enters the picture

When you enter a domain name, a DNS resolver translates that name into records such as an IP address or service endpoint. Your device sends a query to a recursive resolver, which may answer from cache or ask authoritative servers elsewhere in the DNS hierarchy.

Traditional DNS commonly sends the client-to-resolver exchange without the transport encryption used by DoH or DoT. Someone able to observe that path—such as an access provider, Wi-Fi operator or other on-path party—may be able to read the names being requested, alter responses, or block the exchange. The exact exposure depends on the network and resolver configuration.

DoH and DoT change that client-to-recursive-resolver connection. They do not automatically encrypt every communication between recursive and authoritative servers, and they do not remove the resolver’s role. The resolver still receives and processes the names you ask it to resolve.

DoH and DoT in one view

Characteristic Traditional DNS DNS over HTTPS (DoH) DNS over TLS (DoT)
Payload transport DNS messages sent through the conventional DNS transport DNS messages carried in HTTP exchanges protected by HTTPS DNS messages carried through a TLS connection
Typical configuration scope System, router or network Usually an individual browser or application, although system and router implementations also exist Usually operating-system, device or network level
Default service port stated by the standard Conventional DNS ports Uses the HTTPS service selected by the DoH endpoint TCP port 853
What is encrypted Not encrypted by the conventional protocol itself The connection between the client and selected recursive resolver The connection between the client and selected recursive resolver
Resolver visibility The resolver sees the query The resolver sees the query The resolver sees the query
Important identity issue Resolver selection and authentication follow ordinary DNS/network configuration The client uses a configured endpoint, commonly represented by a URI template, and validates the HTTPS service The client should authenticate the TLS server; strict configurations can pin or otherwise preconfigure trusted server identity

ICANN’s Office of the CTO described the transport distinction in April 2020 as follows: “Whereas DoT is ‘DNS messages transported over TLS,’ DoH is ‘DNS messages wrapped in HTTP messages, transported over HTTP over TLS.’” That distinction explains the protocols without implying that every current product uses them in exactly the same way.

What DNS over HTTPS actually is

How a DoH exchange works

DoH packages a DNS query and response inside HTTP, with HTTPS providing the encrypted and authenticated connection. RFC 8484, published by the IETF in October 2018, defines it this way: “This document defines a protocol for sending DNS queries and getting DNS responses over HTTP.” A DoH client is configured with an endpoint URI template or receives that configuration through another trusted channel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because DoH uses the HTTP ecosystem, it can fit naturally into an application that already knows how to make HTTPS connections. A browser can send only its own lookups through DoH while the rest of the operating system continues to use its configured DNS service. That can be useful when you want a browser-specific setting, but it can also create split behavior that is easy to overlook.

DoH’s additional privacy considerations

HTTPS protects the DNS message in transit, but HTTP can carry identifiers beyond the DNS payload. RFC 9076, published in July 2021, notes that cookies, user-agent and language headers, distinctive request-header patterns and other implementation details can provide correlation information. A DoH service may therefore receive both the query and metadata associated with the HTTP client.

Good implementations minimize unnecessary headers and other identifying data. The protocol itself does not promise that every DoH client has the same privacy profile. Check whether the application sends DoH directly, whether it uses a proxy or a shared service, and whether it falls back to conventional DNS when the HTTPS endpoint is unavailable.

What DNS over TLS actually is

How a DoT exchange works

DoT carries ordinary DNS messages through a TLS connection. RFC 7858, published by the IETF in May 2016, specifies TCP port 853 as the default listening port. A client opens a TCP connection, performs a TLS handshake, validates the server according to its configuration, and then exchanges DNS messages inside that protected channel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Authentication modes matter

DoT deployments can use different levels of server authentication. In an out-of-band, pinned configuration, the client is given the expected server identity or key material and refuses an unexpected endpoint. In an opportunistic configuration, the client may try to establish encrypted DNS but accept weaker discovery or fallback behavior. RFC 7858 warns that opportunistic discovery without adequate server validation can allow an on-path attacker to remove the privacy protection.

For a device-wide deployment, prefer a configuration that validates the intended resolver’s certificate and hostname, and understand exactly what happens when validation fails. A padlock or “encrypted” label is not enough if the client silently falls back to ordinary DNS.

What both protocols protect—and what they do not

Protection provided

  • Confidentiality on the client-resolver path: a correctly authenticated DoH or DoT connection prevents ordinary observers on that path from reading the DNS messages directly.
  • Integrity on that path: TLS helps prevent an on-path party from modifying responses without detection when the client validates the intended service.
  • Resistance to simple DNS interception: a network that only watches conventional DNS traffic cannot automatically read a properly encrypted session.

Limits that remain

  • The resolver still sees your queries. It must process them to answer, so its logging, retention and disclosure practices matter.
  • The global DNS hierarchy is not automatically encrypted end to end. The protection described here concerns the client-to-recursive-resolver leg.
  • Other traffic can reveal destinations. IP addresses, connection metadata, application behavior and, in some cases, unencrypted name indicators can allow a network observer to infer where you connect.
  • Encrypted DNS is not a VPN or anonymity system. It does not hide your device’s traffic from every observer or make you anonymous to the resolver.
  • Policy controls still apply. A workplace, school, hotel or household network may manage DNS, block encrypted endpoints or require an approved resolver.

DoH and DoT therefore improve transport privacy; they do not provide comprehensive concealment of online activity.

DoH versus DoT: the practical differences

Where you configure them

ICANN’s April 2020 report characterizes DoH as primarily application-oriented and DoT as primarily operating-system-oriented. Treat that as a design orientation rather than a guarantee. Modern operating systems, browsers, routers and security products can support either protocol, and product defaults change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

DoH is usually the most direct choice when one browser or application offers a clearly labeled Secure DNS or DNS over HTTPS setting. DoT is a natural fit when the operating system, device or router provides a DNS-over-TLS option and you want multiple applications to use the same encrypted resolver.

How the network treats the traffic

DoH resembles ordinary HTTPS traffic, which can help it pass through networks that permit web traffic but can also make organizational monitoring and policy enforcement more difficult. DoT’s conventional destination is TCP port 853, making it straightforward for a network administrator to identify, allow or block. Neither behavior is inherently better; it depends on the policy and threat model of the network you are using.

What the client may reveal

DoH inherits HTTP’s metadata surface, including possible cookies and distinctive request headers. DoT has a narrower DNS-over-TLS message format, but the resolver hostname, TLS handshake and connection timing still form observable metadata. The privacy outcome depends on the complete client and resolver implementation, not just the protocol name.

Performance and reliability

There is no protocol-level rule that DoH is always faster or DoT is always slower. Results vary with resolver location, connection reuse, TLS setup, HTTP implementation, packet handling, congestion and middleboxes. Measure the particular client, network and resolver if latency is important. A configuration that repeatedly falls back to conventional DNS may be less private even if its encrypted mode performs well when available.

Which one should you use?

Choose application-level DoH when…

  • You want encrypted DNS in one browser or app rather than on the whole device.
  • The application offers a clear DoH setting and lets you select or verify the resolver.
  • You need the protocol to operate over a network that permits standard HTTPS but treats other DNS transports differently.

Before enabling it, determine whether the application overrides system DNS, whether other applications continue using conventional DNS, and what fallback occurs if the DoH endpoint cannot be reached.

Choose system or network-level DoT when…

  • You want a single encrypted DNS policy for the operating system or a managed device.
  • Your platform supports DoT with certificate and hostname validation.
  • You can use the standard TLS service on TCP port 853 and the network policy permits it.

Use a strict, authenticated configuration when privacy is the goal. If the only available mode is opportunistic and can silently downgrade, understand that its protection is weaker.

Use the network’s approved configuration when…

On a work, school or managed network, consult the administrator or documented policy before changing DNS. Encrypted DNS can interfere with internal names, filtering, security monitoring, captive portals and split-DNS rules. Do not treat it as a way to bypass those controls. If the network requires a particular resolver, use that service with the approved encryption method or leave the managed setting unchanged.

How to enable encrypted DNS safely

Browser or application DoH

  1. Open the application’s Privacy, Security or Network settings.
  2. Find the setting labeled Secure DNS, DNS over HTTPS or a similar term. Labels and locations vary by product version.
  3. Choose the resolver supplied by your organization or select a custom DoH endpoint only when you trust its ownership and privacy policy. A custom endpoint is normally entered as the URI template specified by the application.
  4. Save the setting and restart the application if it requests a restart.
  5. Use the application’s connection or DNS diagnostics, if available, to confirm that the selected endpoint is being used.
  6. Check whether the application has a fallback option. Decide whether failure should stop resolution or permit ordinary DNS, based on the policy you must follow.

Operating-system or router DoT

  1. Open the device’s network adapter or DNS settings, or the router’s DNS-encryption page.
  2. Choose DNS over TLS or encrypted DNS rather than an ordinary DNS-only mode.
  3. Enter the resolver hostname supplied by the administrator or resolver operator. Set TCP port 853 when the interface asks for a port.
  4. Enable certificate and hostname validation. If the interface offers “opportunistic” and “strict” choices, read the fallback description and select strict validation when your policy requires dependable encryption.
  5. Apply the setting to every active interface—wired, Wi-Fi, cellular or virtual adapters—as appropriate. VPN software may replace these settings while connected.
  6. Reconnect to the network and test name resolution. Confirm that internal domains, local devices and required security services still work.

Router-level deployment

A router can apply one encrypted resolver policy to many devices, but support and fallback behavior vary widely. Confirm whether the router encrypts only its own upstream queries or also prevents clients from sending conventional DNS directly. Document the resolver identity and recovery procedure before deploying it on a household or small-office network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshooting encrypted DNS

Websites stop resolving

First check the resolver hostname, certificate validation and port. A typo, expired certificate, blocked TCP 853 connection or unreachable HTTPS endpoint can prevent resolution. Temporarily restore the approved ordinary setting to determine whether the problem is transport-specific, then correct the encrypted configuration rather than leaving an unintended fallback enabled.

Internal names no longer work

Organizations often use split DNS, where internal names are answered by an internal resolver and public names by another service. A browser-level DoH setting may bypass that policy. Disable the application override or use the organization’s designated endpoint and search-domain configuration.

Captive-portal sign-in fails

Hotels, airports and guest networks may require an initial web sign-in before permitting external connections. Encrypted DNS can fail during that stage. Follow the network’s sign-in instructions, use its approved resolver temporarily, and re-enable the authorized encrypted setting after access is established.

The setting says encrypted, but ordinary DNS is still visible

Look for fallback, multiple active adapters, VPN-provided DNS, background applications and router-level clients. A browser’s DoH setting does not automatically cover the operating system. Test each layer separately and verify which process is generating the query.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A managed device keeps reverting the setting

Device-management policies can enforce resolver addresses, certificates or transport choices. Do not repeatedly override them; ask the administrator which encrypted mode is supported and whether a sanctioned profile is available.

DNS encryption is not DNSSEC

DNSSEC and encrypted DNS solve different problems. DoH and DoT protect the transport between your client and recursive resolver. DNSSEC validates cryptographic signatures on DNS data, helping the resolver or validating client detect forged or altered records when the domain publishes the necessary records.

The technologies can coexist. A resolver may receive queries over DoH or DoT and perform DNSSEC validation before returning an answer. Encrypted transport does not prove that a response is authoritative, and DNSSEC validation does not hide a query from an observer who can read an unencrypted transport.

How to evaluate a DNS resolver

Protocol support is only one part of the decision. Before selecting a resolver, check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Privacy policy: what query data is collected, for what purpose, and whether it is shared.
  • Retention and deletion: how long operational and query logs are kept and whether deletion is documented.
  • Authentication: whether the service supports validated DoH or strict DoT, and how clients obtain the correct endpoint identity.
  • Policy compatibility: filtering, malware blocking, parental controls and handling of internal or special-use names.
  • Availability: endpoint addresses, supported transports, geographic reach and an outage or fallback plan.
  • Operational transparency: clear documentation of resolver behavior rather than a generic claim that the connection is “private.”

Remember that choosing a resolver transfers DNS queries to that service. Encryption protects the route to it; it does not eliminate the service’s ability to observe and retain what it resolves.

A decision checklist

  • Do you need protection for one application or the whole device?
  • Who controls the network, and does its policy permit or require a particular resolver?
  • Can the client authenticate the resolver, or does it merely attempt opportunistic encryption?
  • Will the client fall back to ordinary DNS if encryption fails?
  • Does the selected resolver publish understandable logging and retention practices?
  • Could the setting break internal names, filtering, captive-portal access or VPN behavior?
  • Have you tested every network and interface on which the device operates?

If the answers point to an application-only need, enable a properly authenticated DoH option in that application. If they point to device-wide control and your platform supports strict authentication, configure DoT at the operating-system or network layer. In either case, use a resolver whose policies you accept and document the fallback behavior.
