Call of Duty describes DMZ as an extraction shooter set in a persistent, open-world combat environment. Player Level and unlocks
Call of Duty’s DMZ guide says DMZ Player Level will run from level 1 to level 70. Every deployment contributes to that progression. A dedicated progression track is described as awarding key 3D Printer recipes, unlocking FOB stations, and providing other content through level 70. These are announced details, and the guide does not establish how quickly players will advance.

The Forward Operating Base
The FOB is the command hub for managing progression, preparing gear, and planning deployments. It is expected to grow as players complete Operations across Hajin, eventually housing more than a dozen stations. The guide names Active Duty Operators, Stash/Loadout, DMZ Orders, Firing Range, and Survival Kits among the FOB stations, alongside unlockable stations such as the 3D Printer, Gunsmith, Vendor, bounty leaderboard, Boss Board, and Dog Tag Case.

What can players do during a deployment?
DMZ Orders
Orders provide mission directives and are intended to help onboard players, explain systems and story, and guide activity in the exclusion zone. Call of Duty recommends checking an Order’s requirements and preparing an Operator, gear, and route before insertion.

Players will be able to choose a Dynamic Operation before insertion or begin one by finding an Operations phone in Hajin. Successful completion grants DMZ XP and DMZ Cash, followed by a Supply Drop. The guide says Supply Drop loot quality can rise from Common to Uncommon to Rare after successive successful Operations during one deployment; the contents vary. One listed operation, Hunt Operators, means taking on a full squad of rival Operators.

Side Ops and Lieutenant hunts
Side Ops are presented as lower-intensity activities, including finding lost Supply Drops, repairing trucks, and climbing damaged radio towers. A tower can reveal the general location of a nearby Lieutenant. The guide describes Lieutenant hunts as more dangerous: a Lieutenant may be active whether or not a player is tracking the target, and has increased durability and distinct combat behavior. A kill can award XP, cash, a weapon, and possibly a key to a special loot room.
There is also a risk attached to the Dog Tag Case: picking it up broadcasts the player’s position to all Operators. The guide notes that a quick exfil can be a tactical response.

Commander encounters
Commanders are described as roaming bosses that may appear in multiple locations. They resist many standard weapons, and an encounter can draw nearby enemy forces, rival Operators, or squads pursuing the same target. Defeating one can award high-value 3D Printer Ingredients, XP, and DMZ Cash, while advancing FOB Boss Board progress.
Looting and combat
Looting and fighting AI enemies or rival Operators remain part of the broader extraction loop. The listed activities create different reasons to stay in the zone, but the announcement does not establish that any one route is safer or more rewarding in practice.

When does Modern Warfare 4 and DMZ launch?
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is scheduled for October 23, 2026, with PC availability announced. Because that date is still in the future, it should be treated as the planned release date rather than a completed launch. The official announcement also describes digital preorder availability.
