Looting costs no cash and can provide weapons, armor, ammunition, equipment, valuables and crafting ingredients, but that value exists only if you survive the trip and extract. Buying is faster and more predictable when a station or Vendor has the exact item you need, yet stock limits, rotating inventories, progression gates and steep prices can consume the reserve you need for a more important fight. Use looting for routine supplies, buying for time-critical or high-impact gaps, and consider bartering or weapon modification before replacing a merely mediocre weapon.
This distinction matters because “DMZ” refers to two documented systems. The 2022–23 Warzone 2.0 version used in-match Buy Stations, Backpacks, Contraband weapons, bartering and Contraband Workbenches. The 2026 Modern Warfare 4 DMZ guide describes a Forward Operating Base (FOB), a persistent Stash, a rotating Vendor and a Gunsmith tied to progression. The sections below label which rules apply to each version.

The short answer: loot for value, buy for certainty
Looting is usually the better economic choice. A building search can yield several useful items without reducing your cash, and an extracted Contraband weapon or stash resource can support later deployments. The trade-off is time, route exposure and the possibility of losing everything before exfiltration.
Buying is worthwhile when the cost of another search is greater than the purchase price. Examples include a mission with a hard requirement, a squad that has just been wiped, or a tactical situation in which a specific item immediately changes the odds of survival. A Buy Station or Vendor also lets you choose an item instead of accepting whatever a container happens to contain.

Do not treat every purchase as progress. A purchased gas mask, armor plate carrier or weapon still has to survive the deployment. If buying leaves no cash for a high-impact utility item or an emergency extraction decision, the purchase may have made the squad poorer without making it safer.
Which DMZ version are you playing?
| Mechanic | Warzone 2.0 DMZ (2022–23) | Modern Warfare 4 DMZ guide (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Between-deployment hub | Backpack and other loadout systems in the documented Warzone 2.0 loop | Forward Operating Base (FOB), described as the home between deployments |
| Storage | Large Backpack carries cash, ammunition, weapons, equipment and valuables during a match | Persistent Stash holds weapons, gear, 3D Printer Ingredients and other loot types |
| How you obtain gear | Loot containers and locations, buy from in-match Buy Stations, barter and modify Contraband at a Workbench | Loot during deployments, use the rotating Vendor and unlock options through player level and FOB upgrades |
| Weapon progression | Extracting with a Contraband weapon unlocks its base weapon across other modes | Gunsmith access and other options are linked to progression in the FOB system |
| Availability rule | Buy Stations have limited quantities and their item lists can differ by shop | Vendor stock rotates daily; Player Level 5 unlocks the Vendor, with higher level and FOB upgrades improving available gear |
These systems should not be mixed. A price from the 2023 Warzone 2.0 economy is historical evidence of how expensive a purchase could be, not a promise that the 2026 Vendor charges the same amount.
What looting actually gives you
Warzone 2.0: the Backpack economy
The official Warzone 2.0 overview describes item gathering as storage management in a large Backpack. Cash, extra ammunition, additional weapons and equipment, and valuables occupy that space. A successful extraction converts those finds into a useful reserve for later matches. A Contraband weapon extracted from DMZ also unlocks its base weapon across other modes, giving a good scavenged weapon value beyond the current run.

2026 DMZ: persistent Stash resources
The 2026 FOB guide expands the persistence loop. The Stash can hold weapons, gear, 3D Printer Ingredients and other loot categories. After every extraction, offload useful items rather than leaving them in an operator’s temporary inventory. A Windows Central report citing Activision material says extracted DMZ Cash, 3D Printer Ingredients and other content are shared across active Operators, so one successful run can improve the starting position of another operator.
The real cost of a “free” item
Loot has no purchase price, but it has an opportunity cost. Searching takes time, may force a detour and can expose the squad to hostile players or AI. A common item found in a nearby low-risk building is usually worth looting. A rare requirement that demands several dangerous buildings may be cheaper to buy or barter, provided the station has it and the squad can reach the station safely.
What Buy Stations and Vendors provide
Warzone 2.0 Buy Stations
The official overview lists gear such as gas masks, killstreaks and armor, along with other equipment and custom weapons sold for a considerable fee. Every shop has limited quantities, and the item list can vary from one shop to another. Therefore, reaching a station does not guarantee that a particular armor, streak or weapon will be available.
2026 Vendor and FOB progression
In the 2026 system, the Vendor unlocks at DMZ Player Level 5. Its wares rotate day to day. Player level and FOB upgrades improve the gear that can appear, so a new operator and an established operator are not shopping from the same effective catalog. Check the rotation and your unlocks before deployment; otherwise you may plan around an item that is not currently obtainable.

Why buying feels better than it is
A purchase removes uncertainty about the item but not about the encounter that follows. The station or Vendor is a predictable destination, often in a location other players also understand. The transaction may be quick, yet approaching, opening the menu and leaving can create a concentrated exposure point. Treat the visit as part of the tactical route, not as a risk-free pause.
Historical prices show why cash discipline matters
Season 06 patch notes for the 2023 Warzone 2.0 economy recorded the following Buy Station changes. These are dated patch values, not current prices for every DMZ implementation.
| Item | Earlier price | Season 06 2023 price | What the change illustrates |
|---|---|---|---|
| Munitions Box | $1,000 | $5,000 | Routine resupply can consume meaningful cash |
| Gas Mask | $2,000 | $3,500 | Protection has a direct but limited tactical window |
| Medium Backpack | $5,000 | $6,500 | Capacity upgrades compete with utility purchases |
| Large Backpack | $30,000 | $50,000 | A major reserve commitment for storage |
| 3-Plate Carrier | $35,000 | $65,000 | Replacing core protection can dominate a budget |
| UAV | $12,000 | $100,000 | Information can be extraordinarily expensive |
| Advanced UAV | $12,000 | $200,000 | Top-tier information requires an exceptional reserve |
| Precision Airstrike or Cluster Strike | $12,000 | $30,000 | Offensive utility has a substantial cash opportunity cost |
| Revive Pistol | $7,500 | $10,000 | Recovery tools compete with ammunition and armor |
The lesson is not that a UAV, carrier or streak is always bad value. It is that the item must create more immediate survival or mission value than the loot route, barter ingredients or reserve you give up. A squad with a clear plan for information may justify a high price; a squad buying routine ammunition while carrying no emergency reserve usually has a weaker trade.
Looting versus buying on four practical axes
Cash efficiency
Looting preserves cash and can produce several categories of value at once. Buying converts a known amount of cash into a known item, but that item may be consumed, lost or rendered unnecessary by the next encounter. Compare the purchase price with the cash you could earn or preserve by searching a safe route.
Time
Buying wins when the item is available and the station is close to your current route. Looting wins when the target is common and nearby. A squad that spends ten minutes crossing the map for a low-value container search is not being economically efficient, even though no cash changed hands.
Risk
Looting spreads risk across travel, searches and the final extraction. Buying concentrates risk at a known destination and can attract attention. Choose the lower-risk path for the current objective, not the path that looks cheaper on a spreadsheet.
Persistence
Extracted loot can feed future deployments. In Warzone 2.0, an extracted Contraband weapon can unlock its base weapon across modes. In the 2026 system, extracted resources enter the persistent Stash and can be shared across active Operators. A bought item has no such advantage if it is lost before exfil.
A fifth question for experienced squads
Ask whether the need can be met through a barter recipe or a Workbench before opening the purchase menu. Ingredients you already carry may be more valuable as a targeted craft than as cash-equivalent loot.
Bartering can beat both random loot and cash purchases
Season 03 added Buy Station bartering recipes in the Warzone 2.0 system. The official overview says recipes could produce plate carriers, backpacks, killstreaks, self-revive kits and keys, with zone-specific options and dozens of combinations. The critical condition is having the required ingredients already in the squad’s inventory.
Bartering is strongest when three conditions line up:
- The recipe produces the exact item needed rather than a merely acceptable substitute.
- The ingredients are already available or can be collected on the current route without a dangerous detour.
- Spending those ingredients will not block a more important mission or extraction requirement.
If ingredients are rare and the squad is uncertain whether it will need them later, cash may retain more flexibility. If the ingredients are common and the recipe replaces a very expensive purchase, barter is often the efficient middle path.
Use the Contraband Workbench before replacing a weapon
The Warzone 2.0 Contraband Workbench lets operators add or remove unlocked attachments from Contraband or Insured Weapons for a cash fee. This changes the value calculation for a weapon found during looting. A rifle with poor sights is not automatically a reason to buy a new gun if the Workbench can fit an unlocked optic or other attachment.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Extract or bring the Contraband or Insured Weapon to a deployment that contains a Workbench.
- Open the Workbench and select the weapon you intend to keep.
- Review the unlocked attachments and the cash fee for each change.
- Spend only on modifications that solve the immediate problem, such as sight picture, ammunition handling or control.
- Keep the modified weapon if it fills the mission role; do not pay for a complete replacement merely because the original was found rather than purchased.
The Workbench does not make every scavenged gun worth keeping. It gives a low-cost improvement path when the base weapon and available attachments already suit the squad’s plan.
What to loot and what to buy in common situations
Fresh or wiped operator
- Search nearby, low-risk buildings before crossing open ground or visiting a station.
- Prioritize a usable weapon, armor, ammunition and equipment that lets you survive the next fight.
- Extract with the first functional loadout rather than extending the run for marginal upgrades.
- Buy only the critical item still missing after the initial sweep.
This pattern restores capability while preserving enough cash to react to the next problem.

Mission with a hard requirement
- Identify whether the requirement is a specific item, a key, a killstreak or a quantity of materials.
- Loot while moving toward the objective instead of searching every possible container.
- Check the Buy Station’s stock, the available barter recipes or the 2026 Vendor rotation if the requirement is not appearing.
- Buy or barter when the known solution costs less risk than another search.
- Leave as soon as the requirement is secured if additional loot does not materially improve extraction odds.
Established operator with cash
Cash gives flexibility, not an obligation to spend. Reserve it for information, recovery or utility that creates a clear tactical advantage. Routine armor and ammunition are better looted when the route is safe and the supply is common. Spending down the reserve for a modest upgrade can leave the squad unable to answer a later threat.
Weapon recovery
Take a reliable Contraband weapon, then use the Workbench to fit known attachments when the fee is reasonable. In the 2026 system, inspect the Gunsmith unlocks at the FOB before deploying so you know whether modification or a Vendor purchase is actually available to your operator.
Recommended Free Tools
Current 2026 DMZ deployment
- At the FOB, check your Player Level, unlocked Gunsmith options and current Vendor rotation.
- Plan which Stash resources you are willing to risk and which should remain available for another Operator.
- Loot during the deployment for both immediate gear and 3D Printer Ingredients or other persistent resources.
- Use the Vendor only for a specific gap that the rotation can fill.
- After extraction, offload the recovered items into the Stash so the next deployment starts with the full benefit.
A simple decision rule at every station
Before spending, answer these questions in order:
- What exact problem does this item solve? If the answer is only “it is slightly better,” continue looting.
- Is the item actually in stock or unlocked? Warzone 2.0 shops have limited, differing inventories; the 2026 Vendor rotates and is progression-gated.
- Can a nearby safe route, barter recipe or Workbench solve the same problem? Prefer the option with the lower exposure and opportunity cost.
- What cash, ingredients or time remain after the purchase? Keep enough flexibility for extraction, recovery and the mission’s next phase.
- Does the item matter before exfil? If it will not affect a planned fight or objective, defer it.
This rule deliberately favors selective buying. It does not forbid major purchases; it makes the squad identify the tactical return before paying for them.
Can looting produce better gear than buying?
Looting can produce a higher-value find than the cash budget would comfortably support, especially when a weapon, carrier, streak or valuable component appears early in a run. It is also the only route that naturally combines gear, cash, valuables and ingredients in one trip. However, looting does not guarantee a better item, and the most valuable find has no practical value if the squad fails to extract.
Buying provides certainty about the category and, when available, the exact item. It does not guarantee superior quality because shop stock is constrained and the 2026 Vendor’s inventory depends on rotation and progression. The best approach is therefore not “always loot” or “always buy”: loot when the target is common and the route is safe; buy when certainty and speed are worth the cash.
Common mistakes and their fixes
Buying before checking stock or rotation
Problem: The squad assumes every station carries the same item or that a 2026 Vendor has a permanent catalog.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix: Inspect the actual shop inventory in Warzone 2.0 and the current Vendor rotation and unlock level in 2026 DMZ before changing the route.

Spending the reserve on routine supplies
Problem: Cash disappears on ammunition, armor or a backpack upgrade, leaving no response to a mission-critical need.
Fix: Loot common supplies first and reserve cash for an item whose immediate tactical value is clear.
Ignoring barter ingredients
Problem: The squad pays cash for a carrier, backpack, streak, self-revive kit or key while carrying the materials for a recipe.
Fix: Compare the recipe, travel risk and future value of the ingredients before purchasing.
Discarding a usable Contraband weapon too quickly
Problem: A weapon is replaced solely because its attachments are inconvenient.
Fix: Check the Contraband Workbench and pay only for the attachment that solves the problem.
Over-looting after the squad is ready to exfil
Problem: Additional containers add little value while increasing exposure and the chance of losing a complete haul.

Bottom line for each version
Warzone 2.0 DMZ (2022–23): Loot nearby supplies, extract Contraband weapons when practical, and use Buy Stations for a specific tactical need. Check limited stock, compare barter recipes and use the Workbench to improve a found weapon before paying for a replacement. The historical Season 06 prices show why large purchases require a deliberate reserve.
Modern Warfare 4 DMZ (2026): Treat the FOB, Stash, Vendor and Gunsmith as a progression system rather than an old Buy Station economy. Check the Player Level 5 Vendor and its daily rotation, keep extracted resources in the persistent Stash, and spend only when the available item solves a problem that looting or crafting cannot solve safely.
