DMZ Backpack and Inventory Management (2026): What to Keep, Stow, and Drop

Manage a DMZ inventory around one question: what does the next deployment need, and what must survive outside it? Put deployment equipment in the Loadout, keep reserve gear and loot in the Stash, carry only the ingredients and tools relevant to your immediate objective, and move worthwhile finds out of the Backpack after a successful exfil. The announced 2026 mode uses a limited-slot system, so sorting, merging stacks and understanding exfil risk matter as much as finding valuable items.

How the 2026 DMZ inventory is organized

Activision’s “DMZ Deep Dive, Part 2: How to Play – Forward Operating Base (FOB) Full Intel Guide,” published October 9, 2026, describes four connected inventory areas: the Stash, Loadout, Backpack and item slots. The guide is a pre-launch explanation for the announced October 23, 2026 release, so the figures below should be checked against the live game after launch.

Stash: your out-of-deployment storage

The Stash holds equipment and loot when you are not in a deployment. The guide lists 40 initial Stash item slots and 12 weapon slots, counted separately. Use it as your reserve: keep weapons, equipment and useful ingredients there until you know what the next run requires. Stash space is not the same as weapon capacity, so a full item section does not necessarily mean all weapon slots are occupied.

Loadout: what enters the deployment

The Loadout is the equipment selected from the Stash for active use in a deployment. Once a deployment starts, the chosen weapons, gear and carried items are represented in your Backpack and its slots. Selecting a Loadout is therefore a risk decision: anything you bring can be exposed to a failed exfil unless the live game places it in a Secure Slot.

Backpack and slots: the working limit

The Basic Pack is described as having eight available slots. A slot can hold a stack of several units when the item supports stacking, so eight slots do not always mean eight individual objects. Larger or specialized backpacks may add slots or change slot types. Their actual 2026 specifications should be verified in the in-game description rather than inferred from older DMZ guides.

Inventory area or rule What the 2026 guide establishes How to use it
Stash item storage 40 initial item slots Keep reserve gear, loot and ingredients outside a deployment
Stash weapon storage 12 initial weapon slots, counted separately Store candidate weapons without consuming item slots
Basic Pack Eight available slots Prioritize the next objective; stack compatible items
Resources Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals and Metals are automatically broken down Their totals do not use Stash slots
Exfil result A successful exfil returns the Loadout; anything outside a Secure Slot is lost on failed exfil Treat unsaved carried items as expendable until you leave

These are figures from the pre-launch guide, not independent measurements of a live build. A patch, regional build or launch change can alter them.

What to keep in your Backpack during a run

Backpack space should serve the current deployment, not become a second Stash. Before leaving, identify the mission, crafting plan or extraction objective and reserve slots for the items that directly support it.

Keep mission-critical and immediate-use equipment

  • Required objective items: carry objects needed to complete the selected mission or reach its extraction condition.
  • Survival equipment: retain the armor, medical supplies or other defensive items your route and squad composition require.
  • Crafting inputs for a near-term recipe: keep 3D Printer Ingredients only when you expect to craft equipment during this deployment or immediately after it.
  • Space for uncertain finds: leave at least one flexible slot when entering an unexplored area or high-loot location. A completely full pack forces you to discard something before you know what the next container holds.

Do not treat a full stack as automatically expendable. If the next objective consumes that resource, replacing it may cost more time or risk than the slot is worth. Conversely, carrying a low-priority item “just in case” can prevent you from taking a required mission object.

Understand the ingredient distinction

The guide separates automatically processed Resources from 3D Printer Ingredients. Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals and Metals are broken down automatically; their totals do not occupy Stash slots. 3D Printer Ingredients remain physical Backpack items during a deployment. After a successful exfil, they can be moved into the Stash and used for equipment crafting or FOB station upgrades.

This distinction changes what you should pick up. A resource total can grow without consuming a storage slot, while an ingredient takes a visible slot until you exfil and offload it. If a recipe or FOB upgrade is not part of your near-term plan, an ingredient may be less valuable than an open slot for mission loot.

What to stow after a successful exfil

Successful exfil is the point at which carried items become useful outside the deployment. Activision’s guide advises offloading loot because successful deployments can quickly fill a Backpack. Use this sequence before starting the next run:

  1. Open the post-deployment inventory and sort it. Use the documented Type and Rarity sort, or the alternate Rarity-then-Type order when you want valuable objects grouped first.
  2. Merge compatible stacks. Consolidating partial stacks can free a slot without discarding an item.
  3. Move 3D Printer Ingredients to the Stash. Keep ingredients needed for planned recipes or FOB station upgrades; store them rather than leaving them in the active Loadout.
  4. Return equipment you are not taking next time. Weapons and other useful gear belong in the Stash when they are reserve options rather than part of the next Loadout.
  5. Review the remaining loot. Decide whether each item should be retained, sold, discarded or crafted, based on storage limits, saved-funds limits and your next objective.
  6. Build the next Loadout last. Select only the gear you can justify carrying into the next deployment, leaving reserve capacity in the Stash.

All DMZ Cash, Resources, 3D Printer Ingredients and other acquired content are described by the guide as shared across Active Duty Operators within the named categories. That makes post-exfil sorting important even if you change operators: organize the shared pool before equipping another one.

What you can drop, sell or craft

The official guide does not publish an item-by-item value chart or a universal sell-versus-drop ranking. Use a decision test instead of assuming that a particular item is always junk.

  • Drop: an item that does not support the current mission, survival plan or a clearly intended craft, especially when you need a slot immediately.
  • Sell: an item when storage is tight, saved-funds limits make additional accumulation inefficient, and you have no identified crafting or upgrade use for it.
  • Craft: an ingredient set when the resulting equipment or FOB upgrade improves the next deployment more than keeping the raw ingredients does.
  • Keep: an item with a known upcoming use, a scarce replacement cost, or a role your next Loadout cannot otherwise fill.

Make the choice at the point of need. Do not discard an object solely because it is common or keep it solely because it is rare; rarity is one sorting signal, not a complete mission priority.

Exfil failure: what happens to Backpack items

The 2026 guide states that “anything not placed in a Secure Slot is lost if you fail to Exfil.” In practical terms, a failed exfil can remove weapons, equipment, ingredients and loot that were in the deployment Loadout or Backpack. A successful exfil returns the Loadout, allowing you to sort and store those items afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because the guide does not establish the complete launch specification for every backpack, do not assume that a backpack’s name, rarity or size protects its contents. Check the live item description for any Secure Slot, its eligibility rules and its capacity. Until an item is in a confirmed Secure Slot or safely back in the Stash, treat it as at risk.

Risk-control checklist before a dangerous objective

  • Remove irreplaceable reserve weapons from the Loadout unless the mission requires them.
  • Carry only the ingredients needed for the planned craft; leave surplus ingredients in the Stash.
  • Confirm which slots, if any, are Secure Slots and which item types they accept.
  • Leave one or more open slots for objective items and emergency replacements.
  • Plan an exfil route before entering a high-risk area rather than relying on a full pack and a late extraction.

How to choose among backpack types

The 2026 guide indicates that additional backpacks can add item slots or slot types, but it does not provide a complete live-game ranking. Compare a backpack against your next deployment using these attributes:

Comparison point Question to ask Why it matters
Item-slot count How many usable item slots does the pack provide? More capacity can support loot runs, but also increases the amount you risk carrying
Slot types Are any slots restricted to weapons, ingredients or other categories? A larger number is not automatically better if the slots do not fit your loadout
Weapon slots Does the pack add, remove or replace weapon capacity? Your primary, secondary and reserve-weapon plan may depend on it
Secure Slots Does it include a Secure Slot, and what survives a failed exfil? Protection can matter more than raw capacity on high-risk missions
Crafting fit Will you carry 3D Printer Ingredients or craft during the run? Ingredient-heavy routes need flexible item capacity
Mission fit Does the pack support the next objective’s required items? A specialized pack is useful only when its slots match the task

Use the live backpack tooltip as the authority for these values. The older 2023 Warzone 2.0 DMZ rules are historical context, not proof of unchanged 2026 mechanics.

Why old Secure and Scavenger Backpack advice can mislead

In the April 2023 Warzone 2.0 DMZ Season 03 overview, Activision described Secure Backpacks as retaining eligible non-Contraband, non-on-soldier items and preserving contents for an Active Duty Soldier on elimination. It described Scavenger Backpacks as replacing the third weapon slot found in Medium and Large Backpacks with extra item slots.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those rules belong to the 2023 overview. The available 2026 guide does not confirm that the same names, persistence behavior, weapon-slot tradeoffs or eligibility rules continue unchanged. Treat any old recommendation as a hypothesis to verify in the 2026 item description, not as a current guarantee.

A repeatable inventory routine

Before deployment

  1. Read the mission and identify required objects, craft targets and likely exfil conditions.
  2. Choose a backpack whose slot types match that plan.
  3. Build the Loadout from Stash items, avoiding irreplaceable gear when a cheaper substitute works.
  4. Reserve open slots for mission objects and unexpected high-value finds.
  5. Check Secure Slot rules in the live build and place only eligible items there.

During deployment

  1. Pick up objective items first when they are available.
  2. Use the Backpack sort view to identify low-priority duplicates and partial stacks.
  3. Merge stacks whenever the interface permits it, but do not consume a slot needed for the objective.
  4. When the pack fills, apply the keep, sell, craft or drop test instead of discarding by rarity alone.
  5. Leave for exfil with a route and enough space to handle the final objective.

After successful exfil

  1. Sort by Type and Rarity, or Rarity then Type, to inspect the recovered contents.
  2. Merge stacks and move ingredients, reserve equipment and worthwhile loot into the Stash.
  3. Craft planned equipment or apply ingredients to FOB station upgrades.
  4. Sell or discard items that exceed storage or saved-funds limits without a known use.
  5. Rebuild the next Loadout from the organized Stash rather than carrying the previous run’s entire contents forward.

Common inventory mistakes and fixes

Filling every slot before the objective is complete

Symptom: You must abandon a required item or a better replacement because the Backpack is full. Fix: enter with one or more flexible slots and remove redundant equipment before looting secondary areas.

Confusing automatic Resources with physical Ingredients

Symptom: You expect all crafting materials to be free of slot pressure. Fix: remember that Synthetics, Electronics, Chemicals and Metals are automatically broken down, while 3D Printer Ingredients remain Backpack items until successful exfil.

Assuming a failed exfil protects ordinary items

Symptom: A lost deployment removes items you expected to recover. Fix: place eligible items in a confirmed Secure Slot and treat everything else as vulnerable until exfil succeeds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Using 2023 backpack tables for the 2026 mode

Symptom: A Secure or Scavenger recommendation does not match the live tooltip. Fix: verify current slot counts, weapon capacity, persistence and eligibility in the 2026 game before committing a build.

Leaving successful-run loot in the active Backpack

Symptom: The next deployment starts with no room for objective items. Fix: sort, merge and offload to the Stash immediately after exfil, then create a fresh Loadout.

Version and launch caveat

The numerical limits and rules in this article come from Activision’s October 9, 2026 pre-launch FOB guide for a mode announced for October 23, 2026. They are the clearest published description available for that version, but they are not independent live-game verification. Recheck the Stash counters, backpack tooltips, Secure Slot behavior and resource handling after launch or any inventory-system update.
