DLSS Frame Generation creates one AI-generated frame between traditionally rendered frames. NVIDIA Multi Frame Generation (MFG) extends that idea by creating several generated frames for each traditionally rendered frame. Standard Frame Generation is available on supported GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs as well as later generations. NVIDIA positions Multi Frame Generation for GeForce RTX 50 Series cards. The game must also implement the feature, or support an applicable NVIDIA App override.

As of NVIDIA’s March 31, 2026 DLSS 4.5 announcement, MFG can operate in a 6X mode: five generated frames for every one natively rendered frame. That multiplier increases the frame count shown on the display, but it does not make the GPU render five additional complete frames. Your starting native performance, the game’s support, your monitor’s refresh rate and your tolerance for image or control artifacts determine whether the extra frames are useful.

What DLSS Frame Generation actually does

DLSS is a family of neural-rendering technologies rather than one single switch. Super Resolution reconstructs a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render; Reflex addresses latency coordination; Frame Generation creates additional frames between traditionally rendered frames. This article compares the frame-generation features, not every part of DLSS.

With standard Frame Generation enabled, the game continues to render its normal sequence of frames. The feature analyzes information such as preceding frames and motion data, then synthesizes one intermediate frame. NVIDIA described the original implementation as a 2X mode in its 2022 materials: one native frame and one generated frame make up each displayed pair. The generated frame is intended to make motion appear smoother, but it is not the same as another frame fully rendered by the game engine.

A simple numerical example

Suppose a game is rendering natively at 50 frames per second and Frame Generation supplies one intermediate frame for each native frame. The displayed counter may approach 100 frames per second in ideal conditions. The engine is still producing about 50 native frames per second. If the native rate falls sharply, generated output cannot restore the detail, input sampling or simulation work that the engine is no longer doing.

That distinction matters when you evaluate responsiveness. A higher displayed number can make camera movement look smoother while mouse or controller updates still originate from the lower native rate. Treat the generated count as a presentation rate, not as a replacement for native rendering performance.

What NVIDIA Multi Frame Generation adds

Multi Frame Generation uses the same general idea but inserts more than one generated frame for each traditionally rendered frame. NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 launch generation described a maximum 4X MFG mode. In the March 31, 2026 DLSS 4.5 announcement, NVIDIA raised the stated maximum to 6X on GeForce RTX 50 Series GPUs.

Understanding the 6X label

In NVIDIA’s terminology, 6X means one natively rendered frame plus five generated frames. It does not mean six natively rendered frames, nor does it promise six times the game’s actual simulation or input rate. If the engine renders 30 native frames per second, a 6X presentation could theoretically show up to 180 frames per second when conditions allow, but the underlying game is still rendering only 30 native frames per second.

More generated frames can help a high-refresh display show motion more continuously when native rendering is already stable. They can also expose weaknesses: repeated or synthesized imagery may be easier to notice during rapid camera turns, disocclusion, particle effects, fine geometry or other scenes where motion is difficult to predict.

Dynamic Multi Frame Generation

Dynamic MFG does not lock the game to one multiplier. NVIDIA says it monitors the gap between GPU performance and the display’s maximum refresh rate, then changes among available multipliers toward the target. The practical use case is a high-refresh display or a game whose workload changes substantially from one scene to another.

NVIDIA characterizes the behavior this way: “Instead of sticking to a fixed multiplier, it automatically shifts between different frame multipliers to strike the perfect balance between frame rate, image quality and responsiveness.” That is NVIDIA’s description of the feature’s goal, not an independently measured guarantee that every system will reach its refresh target or that every player will prefer the result.

Which graphics cards support each mode?

RTX 40 Series

NVIDIA distinguishes standard Frame Generation as available on supported RTX 40 Series GPUs. An RTX 40 Series owner should therefore look for the game’s DLSS Frame Generation option, not Multi Frame Generation. The exact model, game implementation and driver support still matter; the presence of an RTX 40 badge alone does not make every title compatible.

RTX 50 Series

NVIDIA identifies GeForce RTX 50 Series as the hardware generation for Multi Frame Generation. These cards can also use standard Frame Generation where a game exposes it. MFG is not a software-only upgrade that turns an RTX 40 Series card into an RTX 50 Series device.

Older or non-RTX hardware

The supplied NVIDIA descriptions do not establish Multi Frame Generation support for older generations or non-RTX cards. If the game does not offer the relevant option for your GPU, use conventional rendering or another supported upscaling mode rather than assuming an override will work.

Game and software support is a separate requirement

A compatible GPU is necessary but not sufficient. The game must expose the feature through its own settings, or NVIDIA must support an NVIDIA App override for that title and mode. Support lists change as games, drivers and app releases are updated.

NVIDIA’s March 31, 2026 announcement listed Borderlands 4, God of War Ragnarök, Monster Hunter Wilds and The Outer Worlds 2 as examples with Enhanced Frame Generation support at that time. This is a dated sample, not a permanent or exhaustive catalog. Check the individual game’s graphics menu, patch notes and NVIDIA’s current compatibility information before planning around MFG.

Driver and setup checklist

NVIDIA stated that Game Ready Driver 595.97 WHQL or newer was required for the DLSS 4.5 features described in its March 31, 2026 announcement. Driver requirements can change, so treat that number as the minimum for that announcement, not as a timeless requirement.

  1. Identify the GPU generation. In Windows, open Settings > System > About or your installed NVIDIA control software and confirm whether the card is RTX 40 Series or RTX 50 Series.
  2. Update the driver. Install the current Game Ready Driver from NVIDIA. If you are specifically testing the announced DLSS 4.5 MFG features, verify that the installed package meets the version requirement stated for your release and game.
  3. Update the game. Apply the title’s latest patch. Frame-generation support is implemented per game and may arrive after the initial release.
  4. Open the graphics settings. Look for a DLSS section. Depending on the title, the labels may be “Frame Generation,” “Multi Frame Generation,” “Dynamic Multi Frame Generation” or “Enhanced Frame Generation.”
  5. Enable Reflex when offered. NVIDIA says the current 6X mode works with Reflex and describes the responsiveness impact as minimal. That is NVIDIA’s characterization; judge the result on your own system.
  6. Set a sensible native baseline. Before enabling generation, observe the game’s native frame rate in the same scene. Record whether it is stable and whether it is near your monitor’s refresh rate.
  7. Choose a fixed or dynamic mode. Use a fixed multiplier when you want predictable behavior. Choose Dynamic MFG when you prefer the multiplier to adapt as workload and the gap to the display refresh change.
  8. Check the display output. Confirm that the selected resolution, refresh rate and variable-refresh settings are actually active in the operating system and monitor menu.
  9. Inspect difficult scenes. Move the camera quickly, examine foliage and particles, and read small text. If artifacts or control response are distracting, reduce the multiplier or disable generation.

When standard Frame Generation is the better choice

You have an RTX 40 Series card

Standard Frame Generation is the relevant NVIDIA option for a supported RTX 40 Series system. There is no reason to chase an MFG toggle that the hardware cannot provide.

The game is already close to your target

If native rendering is stable and you want smoother displayed motion without multiple generated frames, one intermediate frame may be enough. This can be a simpler choice for a 120 Hz or 144 Hz monitor when your native rate is already reasonably high.

You prioritize a conservative presentation

Fewer generated frames mean fewer opportunities for interpolation artifacts in a given native-to-displayed cycle. That does not prove standard Frame Generation has better image quality in every title; it simply gives you a less aggressive multiplier to evaluate.

When Multi Frame Generation can make sense

You have RTX 50 Series hardware and a supported title

MFG’s defining requirement is the combination of an RTX 50 Series GPU, compatible game implementation or override, and current software support. Without all three, the mode is unavailable or unsuitable.

You are targeting a high-refresh display

Multiple generated frames can raise the displayed rate further when the native rate is stable enough to provide a good foundation. The closer your display is to 240 Hz or another high-refresh target, the more relevant the additional multiplier becomes—but only if the game’s visual output remains acceptable.

Your workload varies sharply between scenes

Dynamic MFG is designed for changing conditions. It can use a lower multiplier when the gap to the display refresh is small and a higher one when more displayed frames are useful. NVIDIA describes this as an automatic balance among frame rate, image quality and responsiveness; do not assume it will always select the subjectively best value.

When to leave frame generation off

  • The native rate is unstable or very low. Generated frames cannot replace the engine work, simulation updates or input sampling represented by native frames.
  • The title lacks support. Do not treat a generic DLSS option, an upscaler, or a third-party claim as proof that MFG is available.
  • You play a latency-sensitive competitive title. Test the control response yourself. A higher displayed rate is not the same as a higher native rate, and the official material cited here does not provide an independent, like-for-like latency comparison.
  • Artifacts are visible in your normal play. Look for halos, disocclusion errors, unstable fine detail, UI anomalies or distracting judder. If they bother you, the technically higher output number is not an advantage.
  • Your monitor cannot show the extra output. A multiplier above the panel’s refresh capability may add little visible benefit, particularly if synchronization or frame caps discard the excess.

How to evaluate the result without misleading yourself

Separate native and displayed metrics

Use an overlay that distinguishes the game’s native render rate from the final displayed rate when possible. Compare the same scene with generation off, standard Frame Generation on and MFG on. Record the native rate, displayed rate, frame-time consistency and the monitor refresh setting separately.

Use repeatable scenes

Test a busy town, a fast camera rotation, transparent effects and a quiet interior rather than relying on one easy benchmark location. Generation can look clean in one scene and less convincing in another.

Judge controls and image quality independently

Ask two different questions: “Does motion look smoother?” and “Do controls feel immediate?” Then inspect small text, thin geometry and objects entering the image. A positive answer to the first question does not guarantee a positive answer to the second.

Keep settings constant

Do not change resolution, Super Resolution mode, ray-tracing quality, frame cap and refresh rate at the same time as the frame-generation mode. Otherwise you will not know which change caused an improvement or a problem.

Common misconceptions

“6X means six times the rendering performance”

No. In the current definition, 6X is one native frame plus five generated frames. The engine’s native rendering rate remains the foundation.

“An RTX 40 Series card can use MFG after a driver update”

NVIDIA positions Multi Frame Generation for RTX 50 Series. A newer driver can add game support or fixes, but it does not change the GPU generation requirement stated for MFG.

“Every DLSS game supports every generation mode”

No. Support is title-specific and can vary by implementation, patch, NVIDIA App override and driver version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Dynamic MFG always reaches the monitor’s maximum refresh”

Dynamic MFG is intended to adapt toward a target based on the gap between GPU performance and display refresh. It is not a promise that the target will be reached in every scene.

“Frame Generation replaces Reflex or Super Resolution”

No. NVIDIA describes DLSS as a suite. Frame Generation, Super Resolution and Reflex address different parts of the rendering and display pipeline and may be offered as separate settings.

A practical decision path

  1. Check the GPU. RTX 50 Series qualifies you to investigate MFG; a supported RTX 40 Series card points you toward standard Frame Generation.
  2. Check the game. Confirm the exact mode in the title’s current settings or an applicable NVIDIA App override.
  3. Measure native performance. If the native rate is unstable, fix graphics settings or resolution first.
  4. Match the mode to the display. One generated frame may be sufficient for a moderate refresh target; multiple frames are mainly relevant when you are pursuing a substantially higher displayed rate.
  5. Test motion, controls and artifacts. Keep the mode that meets your own priorities, even if its displayed frame count is lower.

What is established—and what is not

NVIDIA’s current public descriptions establish the frame-count distinction, the RTX 50 Series positioning for MFG, the RTX 40 Series availability of standard Frame Generation, the 6X maximum announced for DLSS 4.5, Dynamic MFG’s adaptive goal and the 595.97 WHQL-or-newer requirement stated in that announcement. They do not provide an independent, universal latency or image-quality ranking between Frame Generation and MFG.

Accordingly, choose based on your hardware, the specific game, native performance, display refresh and your own visual and control judgment. A generated-frame multiplier is a tool for presenting motion, not a substitute for a fast, stable native render.
