DLSS is the safest image-quality choice in a Sony PC game when all three upscalers are available and you have a compatible GeForce RTX card. ComputerBase’s 2026 blind comparison placed DLSS 4.5 ahead of AMD FSR Upscaling AI and XeSS 2 in its tested scenes, particularly during motion and in fine detail. AMD FSR still reaches more types of hardware, and XeSS can outperform older, non-machine-learning FSR implementations in some games. Treat “DLSS 5” as an unverified label: the official NVIDIA material covered here documents DLSS 4, while the independent 2026 comparison tested DLSS 4.5.
Your result depends on the game’s implementation, patch, internal-resolution preset, sharpening and GPU. The practical answer is to start with DLSS Quality on GeForce, the game’s native FSR mode on Radeon, or the XMX XeSS path on Intel Arc, then make a controlled comparison in the same moving scene.

What “DLSS 5” means in this comparison
No official NVIDIA DLSS 5 announcement was identified for this comparison. NVIDIA’s current public documentation describes DLSS 4, including transformer-based models and Multi Frame Generation for GeForce RTX 50-series PCs. The independent image-quality result relevant to Sony ports is a 2026 test of DLSS 4.5, not a product called DLSS 5.

That distinction matters because online discussions often use “DLSS 5 image quality” as shorthand for a future or rumored release. You should not assume that a game menu, driver or graphics card supports DLSS 5. Check the exact option shown by the game and the version named in its patch notes. If a Sony port lists DLSS 3, that identifies the supported feature set for that build; it does not promise every later DLSS model.

DLSS also contains separate features. Reconstruction quality is the upscaler’s job. Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation create additional displayed frames after the game has rendered a base frame. They can increase the frame counter, but they do not replace a sufficiently fast base frame or remove input latency.
Which Sony PC games officially expose the options?
Support is tied to an individual game and patch rather than to the Sony brand as a whole. Menus can change when a port is updated, so verify the current in-game options before comparing screenshots.
| Game | Documented PC options | What to check in the menu |
|---|---|---|
| Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition | NVIDIA DLSS 3 upscaling and Frame Generation; AMD FSR; Intel XeSS; unlocked frame rates; DualSense support | The exact FSR and XeSS version exposed by your installed patch, plus whether Frame Generation and Reflex are separately selectable |
| Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart | DLSS 3, FSR 2, XeSS and Insomniac’s Temporal Injection | Which reconstruction method is active, the internal-resolution preset, sharpening and ray-tracing settings |
Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition’s published feature list also names NVIDIA DLAA for image enhancement and NVIDIA Reflex for latency reduction. Those are different controls from the upscaler itself. Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart’s Temporal Injection is a separate reconstruction option, so include it when evaluating the game rather than assuming DLSS, FSR and XeSS are the only choices.

Temporal stability and detail
Look first at objects that move or occupy only a few pixels: foliage, hair, fence wires, branches, particles and thin geometry. A good reconstruction keeps these features attached to the scene instead of producing shimmer, crawling edges or disappearing strands when the camera moves. Reflections and distant texture patterns are also useful because errors become obvious during a pan.
ComputerBase’s 2026 comparison found DLSS 4.5 ahead of AMD FSR Upscaling AI and XeSS 2 in the tested scenarios. A reader blind test covering six titles recorded 48.2% of 6,747 votes for DLSS 4.5. That is a preference result from that panel, not a universal percentage for every game, resolution or GPU.
Why implementation can outweigh the brand
An older upscaler that is correctly integrated can look better than a newer algorithm connected to incomplete motion vectors, a mismatched sharpening pass or an unsuitable internal resolution. A patch may also alter ghosting, particle handling or anti-aliasing without changing the name in the menu. Compare the actual build you play, not a screenshot from another patch.
DLSS: the default starting point on GeForce
If your RTX card and the Sony port both support DLSS, select the Quality preset first. It normally preserves more input detail than Balanced or Performance because the game renders at a higher internal resolution before reconstruction. Move down one preset only when you need additional performance and have checked that foliage, hair and thin geometry remain stable.

NVIDIA’s DLSS 4 announcement describes transformer-based DLSS models and Multi Frame Generation for GeForce RTX 50-series PCs. Those features are separate from the reconstruction comparison: a generated frame can make motion look smoother while the underlying upscaler still determines the clarity of the rendered image. Evaluate base image quality with Frame Generation disabled, then decide whether the extra displayed frames are worthwhile.
DLSS is not automatically perfect. Watch for ghost trails behind moving characters, disocclusion errors when an object leaves the frame, and shimmering in foliage. If those artifacts appear, test another preset, disable excessive sharpening, and confirm that the game is using the intended DLSS mode rather than a driver-level override.
AMD FSR: widest reach, several generations
FSR is the practical choice when a game runs on Radeon hardware or when the PC does not have a compatible RTX card. Its software reach is broader than the vendor-specific ML paths, which is why many Sony ports include it alongside DLSS and XeSS.
Do not treat every FSR label as equivalent. The documented Sony examples include FSR without always identifying a generation, while Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart specifically lists FSR 2. Check the installed patch and the menu’s exact wording. AMD’s newer machine-learning FSR path is documented for Radeon RX 7000- and RX 9000-series cards, so a menu option or marketing reference to that path does not imply support on every Radeon generation.

That figure is an AMD vendor claim for specified games and settings, not a guarantee for a Sony game or for another Radeon model. Measure your own frame rate and image quality in the port you are playing.
Intel XeSS: choose XMX on Arc, compare DP4a elsewhere
XeSS uses deep-learning upscaling and offers two integration paths. The XMX path uses Intel Arc’s matrix hardware; DP4a targets broader GPU compatibility. When a Sony game exposes both paths on an Arc system, start with XMX and then inspect motion stability against the alternatives at the same preset.
XeSS can surpass older, non-machine-learning FSR implementations in some games, according to TechSpot’s 2025 support review. That does not establish a universal ranking against current FSR modes or DLSS 4.5. Use a repeatable scene and judge the specific patch.

On a non-Arc GPU, the DP4a path may be the only XeSS route available. Performance and quality can differ from XMX, so record the path along with your preset when you make a comparison.
Upscaling versus Frame Generation and latency
Upscaling lowers the internal render resolution and reconstructs a higher-resolution image. Frame Generation inserts synthetic frames between rendered frames. These operations solve different problems:
- Upscaling: can raise the base frame rate while preserving more detail than rendering at a lower output resolution without reconstruction.
- Frame Generation: can increase displayed smoothness, but the game still responds at the cadence of the base frames and may show artifacts around fast-moving objects.
- Latency tools: NVIDIA Reflex, where supported, target the delay between input and a displayed frame; they are not substitutes for a faster base render.
For that reason, establish an acceptable base frame rate with Frame Generation off. Enable generation only after camera movement and controls feel responsive. Read the in-game latency indicator, if provided, and use the same cap, V-sync and display mode when comparing results.
Which upscaler is best at 1440p or 4K?
At 1440p
1440p leaves less room for reconstruction errors than 4K because each output pixel represents a larger portion of the scene. Start with the Quality preset on DLSS, FSR or XeSS. Inspect hair, leaves, wires and distant signs during a slow camera pan. Balanced may be acceptable if the game is GPU-limited, but the lower internal resolution can expose shimmer and blur sooner.
At 4K
4K supplies more output pixels and generally gives each upscaler more information to reconstruct. Quality remains the sensible first test; Performance can be useful for demanding ray tracing, but it deserves a close inspection of foliage, reflections and particle effects. Compare identical ray-tracing, texture, sharpening and motion-blur settings so that the upscaler is the only variable.
On a handheld or lower-power PC
Frame-rate targets and battery or thermal limits may justify a more aggressive preset. Prefer a stable frame rate over a fluctuating one, and avoid judging a mode from a static screenshot alone. Camera movement often reveals whether the lower internal resolution is acceptable.
A reproducible Sony-game comparison procedure
Use this process for Horizon Forbidden West Complete Edition, Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart or another port that exposes multiple choices:

- Powered by the NVIDIA Blackwell architecture and DLSS 4 OC mode: 2640MHz/Default mode: 2610MHz (Boost Clock)
- Military-grade components deliver rock-solid power and longer lifespan for ultimate durability
- Protective PCB coating helps protect against short circuits caused by moisture, dust, or debris
- 3.125-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
- Update consistently. Install the same game patch and GPU driver for every run. Record both versions.
- Lock the scene. Choose a short route containing foliage, hair, particles, reflections and camera motion. Repeat the same movement rather than comparing unrelated screenshots.
- Fix output conditions. Select 1440p or 4K, the same display mode, frame-rate cap, V-sync state, ray-tracing settings, texture quality, motion blur and sharpening.
- Set the internal-resolution preset. Test DLSS Quality, the equivalent FSR mode and the equivalent XeSS mode before changing to Balanced or Performance. Do not compare Quality from one upscaler with Performance from another.
- Disable Frame Generation initially. Record the base frame rate and how controls feel. This isolates reconstruction quality and native latency.
- Inspect motion. Pan across leaves, hair, thin geometry and reflections. Look for shimmer, ghosting, disocclusion trails, broken particles and crawling edges.
- Repeat at the target resolution. A mode that looks clean at 4K may be too soft at 1440p, and vice versa.
- Test generation separately. If the game and GPU support it, enable Frame Generation after the base comparison. Record the base and displayed rates separately and note any latency or artifact change.
- Keep a record. Write down GPU, driver, game patch, upscaler version or path, preset, internal resolution and observations so another person can reproduce the result.
Recommendations by GPU
GeForce RTX
- Start with DLSS Quality and Frame Generation off.
- Move to Balanced only when the base frame rate is insufficient and motion remains stable.
- On RTX 50-series hardware, treat transformer models and Multi Frame Generation as optional performance features, not proof that reconstruction is better in every scene.
- Use Reflex when the game exposes it and responsiveness matters.
Radeon RX
- Start with the game’s native FSR option and identify its generation in the menu or patch notes.
- Verify hardware requirements before selecting a newer ML-based FSR path; the documented target is Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 series.
- Compare FSR against XeSS or another available mode if foliage or hair shows instability.
Intel Arc
- Prefer XeSS XMX when the game offers that path.
- Compare motion stability at the same internal-resolution preset, then test DP4a only when you need broader compatibility.
- Keep Frame Generation out of the first pass so that reconstruction and base latency remain clear.
Common problems and fixes
The menu lists only one or two upscalers
Support is patch-specific. Confirm that the game is updated, check its graphics menu after restarting, and read the current patch notes. A feature listed for one Sony port does not guarantee that another port includes it.
The image is blurry despite a high-quality preset
Check output resolution, internal-resolution scale and sharpening. Excessive motion blur can also hide detail. Reset the sharpening control before judging the upscaler, then compare a moving scene rather than a paused frame.

Try the next higher internal-resolution preset, reduce sharpening, and compare another reconstruction method. If the artifact persists only in one game, the integration or motion data may be the limiting factor rather than the algorithm’s headline version.
Frame Generation feels laggy
Disable it and confirm that the base frame rate is high enough for responsive controls. Check Reflex or the game’s latency settings, remove an overly aggressive frame-rate cap, and test again with the same V-sync and display mode.
Performance differs sharply from published claims
Vendor figures are conditional. AMD’s 3.5× FSR Redstone result, for example, applies to a specified Radeon RX 9070 XT example and selected games and settings. Your resolution, ray tracing, CPU limit, driver, patch and preset can all change the result.
Verdict: the best choice depends on the hardware, but image quality favors DLSS
For a Sony PC port that exposes DLSS, FSR and XeSS, DLSS 4.5 is the evidence-backed image-quality leader in the cited 2026 comparison, making DLSS Quality the first setting to try on a compatible GeForce card. FSR remains the compatibility choice and may be the only practical option on Radeon or non-RTX systems; identify its generation before drawing conclusions. XeSS is a strong alternative, particularly through XMX on Intel Arc, and can beat older FSR implementations in some games.
Make the decision from the exact game build, resolution and moving scene you play. Keep reconstruction quality separate from Frame Generation, record your settings, and choose the mode that delivers stable detail and acceptable latency rather than the newest-sounding label.
