It uses the engine’s rendered image, artist-authored geometry and materials, lighting data, color and motion vectors to infer richer lighting and material behavior while keeping the scene’s structure stable. It does not replace every other DLSS feature: Super Resolution can reconstruct a higher-resolution image, Frame Generation can add intermediate frames, Multi Frame Generation can add several frames on RTX 50 Series, and Ray Reconstruction can improve ray-traced denoising. A supported game can schedule these technologies together, with DLSS 5 acting as a final visual-fidelity pass.
What DLSS 5 adds to the DLSS family
Earlier DLSS features mainly solved distinct reconstruction problems. Super Resolution rebuilt a high-resolution output from a lower-resolution render. Frame Generation synthesized additional images between conventionally rendered frames. Ray Reconstruction replaced conventional denoising for ray-traced or path-traced lighting. DLSS 5 adds a different goal: making lighting and materials appear more lifelike without discarding the scene the artist authored.

NVIDIA calls the new stage 3D-Guided Neural Rendering. The model receives more than a finished color image. The game supplies its rendered frame, geometry and textures, lighting buffers, color information and motion vectors. Those inputs give the model both visual evidence and the scene relationships needed to add effects such as subsurface scattering, light passing through hair and foliage, contact shadows and small-scale reflections.

NVIDIA describes a strict one-frame-in, one-frame-out process guided by engine motion vectors. That temporal guidance is designed to limit shimmering, swimming details and drift from one frame to the next. DLSS 5 is therefore best understood as a controlled neural-rendering enhancement, not as a replacement for the game engine or a general-purpose image generator.

How the complete DLSS pipeline works
The exact order and scheduling can vary by game, but the technologies fit together in a predictable conceptual pipeline.
- The engine renders a base frame. The game’s normal raster or ray-traced pipeline produces a frame and supplies motion vectors, material and lighting information, depth-related scene data and other buffers used by DLSS.
- Super Resolution reconstructs the target resolution. The game can render internally at a lower resolution, then use temporal information from earlier frames and the current motion data to reconstruct a sharper output image.
- Frame Generation inserts an additional frame. An AI-generated image is placed between rendered frames. On RTX 50 Series, Multi Frame Generation can create several generated frames for each conventionally rendered frame.
- Ray Reconstruction can clean ray-traced lighting. Where a title uses ray tracing or path tracing, a neural denoiser can replace a conventional denoising pass and preserve more useful lighting information.
- DLSS 5 performs the optional visual-fidelity pass. 3D-Guided Neural Rendering uses the available scene information to enhance lighting and material interactions while maintaining temporal stability.
These stages are independently controllable. A game can offer Super Resolution without Frame Generation, Frame Generation without DLSS 5, or a combination of all supported features. The presence of one DLSS option does not imply that every other component is available.
What the engine contributes
The engine’s data is the anchor for DLSS 5. Artist-authored geometry and textures describe what objects are; lighting buffers and color describe their current appearance; motion vectors describe how pixels and objects move between frames. This information lets the model distinguish, for example, a moving strand of hair from a static background edge instead of treating every high-frequency pattern as interchangeable detail.

Super Resolution is primarily a pixel-reconstruction technology. Rendering fewer pixels lowers the work required for the base frame, while the neural reconstruction aims to produce a higher-resolution output. It can increase available frame rate or leave more GPU budget for effects such as ray tracing. It does not, by itself, create a second time step in the game simulation.
What Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation contribute
Frame Generation synthesizes images between rendered frames, increasing the number of images shown to the player. Multi Frame Generation extends that idea on RTX 50 Series hardware by creating several generated frames per rendered frame; NVIDIA quotes up to five generated frames per rendered frame for this feature. That figure describes Multi Frame Generation, not the DLSS 5 neural-rendering stage.

What Ray Reconstruction contributes
Ray Reconstruction targets noisy ray-traced or path-traced lighting. Instead of applying a conventional denoiser after rays are sampled, the neural model reconstructs a cleaner lighting result from the ray-tracing data. It addresses lighting reconstruction, whereas DLSS 5 adds broader material and illumination behavior as an optional final stage.
DLSS components compared
| Component | Primary job | Main inputs | What the player sees | Frame-rate and latency effect | Hardware and support |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| DLSS Super Resolution | Reconstruct a higher-resolution image from a lower-resolution render | Current and previous frames, motion vectors and engine buffers | Higher apparent output resolution with reconstructed detail | Lower internal rendering cost can raise frame rate or free GPU budget; it does not add a simulated game tick | Availability depends on the game and its DLSS implementation; DLSS 5 is not required |
| Frame Generation | Create an intermediate image between rendered frames | Rendered frames, motion information and engine data | More displayed frames and smoother motion | Displayed FPS can rise faster than simulation rate; responsiveness must be judged separately, with NVIDIA Reflex relevant to latency management | Requires a game implementation and compatible GPU generation for that title’s mode |
| Multi Frame Generation | Create several generated frames for each rendered frame | Rendered frames plus motion and scene data | Still more displayed frames than single Frame Generation | Can increase displayed FPS substantially, but generated images do not make the game simulation run at the same rate | RTX 50 Series; NVIDIA quotes up to five generated frames per rendered frame |
| Ray Reconstruction | Neurally denoise ray-traced or path-traced lighting | Ray-tracing samples and related engine buffers | Cleaner, more stable reflections and global illumination in supported modes | Image-quality and denoising change; performance depends on the game’s ray-tracing workload | Requires a game that implements Ray Reconstruction |
| DLSS 5 3D-Guided Neural Rendering | Enhance lighting and material interactions while preserving scene structure | Rendered frame, geometry, textures, lighting buffers, color and motion vectors | More lifelike scattering, transmission, contact shadows and micro-reflections | Optional final neural stage; its visual effect is separate from the frame-rate increase supplied by Super Resolution or Frame Generation | Official support is listed for GeForce RTX 50 Series and GeForce NOW; game support is required |
Are DLSS 5 frames “fake,” and does it improve graphics?
Frame Generation and DLSS 5 answer different parts of that question. A generated frame is synthesized rather than produced by a full game-rendering pass, so the game simulation is still advancing at the rate of the conventionally rendered frames. The displayed frame count can therefore be higher than the rate at which input, physics and gameplay logic are updated. This is why a high displayed-FPS number should not be treated as a direct measurement of responsiveness.
DLSS 5 is not primarily a frame-rate feature. Its purpose is to alter the appearance of lighting and materials, using the engine’s scene data as constraints. When enabled in a supported title, it can make effects such as light transmission through foliage, subtle skin or other subsurface response, contact darkening and tiny reflections more convincing. Whether that improvement is obvious depends on the scene, the selected model and the developer’s masks and intensity settings.
Players should evaluate two separate outcomes: visual quality from Super Resolution, Ray Reconstruction and DLSS 5, and motion smoothness from Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation. NVIDIA Reflex can be used alongside frame-generation modes to address the input-to-display queue, but it cannot make a generated image equivalent to a newly simulated game frame.
Developer controls preserve artistic intent
NVIDIA exposes controls so a studio can decide where and how strongly DLSS 5 operates. Structure Intensity targets high-frequency detail, while Tone Intensity controls broader lighting and color response. Automatic semantic masking can identify classes of content, and developers can add their own per-pixel or engine-level masks.

Those masks allow a team to apply the effect selectively to a character, prop, material or scene and to protect areas where a stylized look is intentional. A developer might permit stronger enhancement on skin or hair while limiting it on a deliberately flat-shaded interface element. Model selection and intensity controls also provide a way to balance realism against the game’s established art direction.
Because the process uses motion vectors and a one-frame-in, one-frame-out design, temporal stability is a stated goal. Poor or incomplete motion data, unusual effects and implementation choices can still affect the result; DLSS 5 is not a guarantee that every scene will look identical to a native render.
GPU requirements and availability
DLSS 5 launched in NBA 2K27 on September 3, 2026. NVIDIA lists 3D-Guided Neural Rendering for all GeForce RTX 50 Series desktop and laptop GPUs and for GeForce NOW. Its compatibility table does not list RTX 40, RTX 30 or RTX 20 GPUs for the DLSS 5 neural-rendering stage.
| Hardware | DLSS 5 status | What this means |
|---|---|---|
| GeForce RTX 50 Series desktop | Supported when the game implements DLSS 5 | Eligible for the 3D-Guided Neural Rendering stage and RTX 50-specific Multi Frame Generation features where offered |
| GeForce RTX 50 Series laptop | Supported when the game implements DLSS 5 | Eligibility is based on the RTX 50 laptop GPU and title support; performance will still depend on the laptop’s power and cooling design |
| GeForce RTX 40 Series | Not listed for DLSS 5 3D-Guided Neural Rendering | Existing DLSS features may remain available in games that support them, but that does not add DLSS 5 |
| GeForce RTX 30 or RTX 20 Series | Not listed for DLSS 5 3D-Guided Neural Rendering | Do not expect the DLSS 5 neural-rendering option; other game-specific technologies may differ |
| GeForce NOW | Available through supported cloud sessions | The cloud service supplies the compatible RTX hardware; availability depends on the supported game and the service’s regional offering |
NVIDIA says it plans to work on expanding official RTX 40 support after RTX 50 performance is tuned, but it has not provided a firm date. Treat RTX 40 compatibility as unannounced rather than promised.

A compatible GPU alone does not add DLSS 5 to an unsupported title. The game must include NVIDIA’s implementation and expose the feature in its graphics settings. NVIDIA identifies Streamline and an Unreal Engine 5 plugin as integration paths for developers.

- Confirm the title supports DLSS 5. Look for a specific 3D-Guided Neural Rendering or DLSS 5 entry in the game’s official feature list or graphics menu.
- Confirm the GPU generation. For local rendering, the officially listed generation is GeForce RTX 50 Series. RTX 40, RTX 30 and RTX 20 are not listed for this stage.
- Enable the components independently. Choose a Super Resolution mode if you want lower internal resolution, enable Frame Generation or Multi Frame Generation if the title offers it, and then enable DLSS 5’s neural-rendering option.
- Adjust the developer-exposed quality controls. If the title provides structure or tone intensity settings, use them to favor fine detail or broader lighting response according to the scene.
- Check responsiveness separately from displayed FPS. Compare input feel and camera movement, not only the counter. Frame Generation can increase displayed frames without increasing the simulation rate; Reflex support can matter for the resulting latency.
If the DLSS 5 option is missing, the most likely explanations are that the game has not integrated the feature, the installed GPU is outside the listed generation, or the title exposes only other DLSS components. Enabling Super Resolution or Frame Generation in such a game does not silently activate DLSS 5.
Limits, trade-offs and useful performance claims
DLSS technologies are not interchangeable quality switches. Super Resolution can reduce the base rendering workload, but aggressive reconstruction settings may trade fine detail for speed. Frame Generation can make camera motion look smoother while leaving gameplay simulation and input sampling tied to the rendered frames. Multi Frame Generation increases that separation further because several displayed images may appear between two fully rendered frames.
DLSS 5’s benefit is scene-dependent. A dark scene with transmissive foliage, hair or reflective materials gives the model more opportunities to show its strengths than a simple, brightly lit surface. The final look also depends on how carefully the studio authored masks, motion vectors and material data.
NVIDIA says the combined DLSS 4.5 suite can produce 23 out of every 24 displayed pixels through neural techniques. That statistic refers to the suite as a whole, not to DLSS 5 alone. Likewise, NVIDIA’s claim of a 375,000-times increase in compute is a historical comparison between GeForce 3-era programmable shaders and RTX 5090-era neural rendering, not a DLSS 5 frame-rate multiplier.
How DLSS 5 differs from simply increasing resolution
Raising a game’s output resolution asks the renderer to calculate more pixels directly. Super Resolution instead reconstructs a high-resolution result from a lower-resolution render. DLSS 5 goes beyond that reconstruction question: it estimates how light and materials should interact, using scene-aware inputs to add visual behavior that a straightforward pixel upscale would not create.
That distinction explains why the technologies are complementary. Super Resolution can provide the pixel budget, Ray Reconstruction can improve sampled ray-traced lighting, Frame Generation can increase displayed motion smoothness, and DLSS 5 can refine the lighting and material response. A title may expose one, several or all of these options, and each should be judged by its own effect.
Bottom line for players
DLSS 5 is an RTX 50-era neural-rendering feature focused on visual realism, not merely a faster upscaler. It uses the engine’s geometry, materials, lighting and motion data to enhance the final image, while Super Resolution, Frame Generation, Multi Frame Generation and Ray Reconstruction perform their own specialized jobs. As of its September 3, 2026 launch in NBA 2K27, official DLSS 5 support is limited to GeForce RTX 50 Series hardware and GeForce NOW, with a compatible game required. Choose it when you want richer lighting and material detail, but assess generated-frame modes separately for responsiveness and simulation rate.
