IDC-reported figures put DJI’s 2025 handheld smart-camera shipments at a record 10.4 million units, more than the 9,438,876 digital cameras reported by Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) member companies for the year. The comparison is striking, but it is not like for like: IDC and CIPA count different product categories, and the DJI figure is a market-research estimate rather than an audited company disclosure.
How many handheld cameras did DJI ship in 2025?
IDC’s 2025 handheld-smart-camera tracker put DJI at 62% of a global market totaling 16.65 million shipments, according to IDC’s March 23, 2026 announcement. Two contemporary reports, citing IDC, give DJI’s underlying shipment estimate as 10.4 million units. That is a record in those reports, but it should be described as an IDC-reported estimate—not as a number DJI audited or disclosed directly.
The broader category grew quickly: IDC counted 16.65 million global handheld smart cameras shipped in 2025, up 83% year over year. Shipments measure devices sent into the market; they do not by themselves reveal retail sales, revenue, profit, image quality or what buyers prefer.
How does that compare with CIPA’s camera shipments?
CIPA reported 9,438,876 digital-camera shipments for 2025 across its reporting member companies. That total comprises 7,001,965 interchangeable-lens cameras and 2,436,911 built-in-lens cameras. The interchangeable-lens figure includes 6,311,054 mirrorless cameras and 690,911 SLR cameras.

| Measure | 2025 shipments | What it counts |
|---|---|---|
| DJI handheld smart cameras | 10.4 million (IDC-reported estimate) | DJI’s estimated shipments within IDC’s handheld-smart-camera market |
| Global handheld smart cameras | 16.65 million | IDC’s worldwide category total |
| CIPA digital cameras | 9,438,876 | Digital-camera shipments reported by CIPA member companies |
So the headline comparison is numerically accurate as a comparison of the two reported totals: the estimated DJI figure exceeds CIPA’s member-company digital-camera total. But it does not show that DJI shipped more cameras than every Japanese camera maker across every product category, or that the two totals represent equivalent devices. CIPA’s number is specifically the association’s reported member-company shipments; it is not a census of all brands worldwide.
Why the categories are different
IDC defines a handheld smart camera as a consumer portable imaging device with processing capability, electronic or optical stabilization, resolution of at least 2K, and handheld use. Its category covers action cameras, panoramic or 360-degree cameras, and gimbal cameras. CIPA’s digital-camera statistics instead group built-in-lens and interchangeable-lens cameras, including compact cameras, mirrorless cameras and SLRs.

That distinction matters because a compact stabilized camera designed for moving shots, vlogging or immersive 360-degree footage is not the same kind of product as a conventional mirrorless or SLR camera. The totals help show the scale of two parts of imaging, not a direct contest between interchangeable alternatives.

- Gimbal cameras: Shipments grew by more than 100% year over year. IDC identified DJI’s Pocket 3 as a strong product in this segment.
IDC describes short videos, vlogs, sports, cycling, water activities and everyday recording as use cases for these devices. Coverage of the figures also points to creators filming while walking and to wide-angle or 360-degree recording. These examples help explain the kinds of needs the products serve; they do not establish that any one use caused the overall market’s growth.
IDC also reported that Insta360 shipped more than 3.4 million handheld cameras, led the 360-degree segment and held over half of the detachable action-camera segment. These, like the overall market figures, are market-research estimates.

Does this mean handheld cameras are replacing conventional cameras?
No conclusion of replacement follows from these shipment totals alone. The products serve overlapping but distinct uses: small stabilized cameras can be convenient for moving footage, vlogs and immersive views, while conventional digital cameras offer different bodies, lenses and imaging approaches. Shipment comparisons do not establish which category users prefer, which produces better images, or whether one is displacing the other.
What IDC expects next
IDC forecast that annual handheld-smart-camera shipments could exceed 40 million by 2030, with a five-year compound annual growth rate near 20%. That is a forecast published in 2026, not a realized outcome. IDC also flagged memory-cost pressure and competition as possible headwinds for performance in 2026.
