You need 8K for reframing or high-resolution delivery
Action 6 records 8K (7,680 × 4,320) at 24, 25 or 30 frames per second in a 16:9 frame. That gives you more pixels for cropping a 4K edit or extracting still frames than a 5.3K source. It is useful when the final shot may need reframing, but it does not automatically produce a better-looking result in every scene.

The 8K mode has important limits. DJI restricts it to 16:9, limits electronic stabilization to RockSteady or RockSteady+, reduces the available field-of-view choices, disables Film Tone and Quality Priority, and uses a narrower ISO range than other modes. Treat 8K as a specialized capture mode rather than the camera’s unrestricted default.
You regularly shoot underwater or around heavy spray
DJI rates the camera itself to 20 m and the camera plus Waterproof Case to 60 m. DJI recommends fitting the case for extended underwater recording or environments with high water-impact pressure. The company also warns against hot springs, extreme underwater environments and corrosive or unknown liquids. Inspect seals, close every door correctly and follow the maker’s maintenance instructions; a depth number does not replace those checks.
You want a larger sensor and adjustable aperture
The Action 6 specification lists a 1/1.1-inch CMOS sensor, a 155-degree field of view and a variable f/2.0–f/4.0 aperture. A larger sensor can help gather light, but sensor size alone does not establish image quality. Tom’s Guide described the larger sensor as a low-light strength and reported favorable impressions in its testing; those are that publication’s observations, not a controlled comparison performed for this article.
Your phone or computer can handle the 8K workflow
DJI states: “Downloading and editing 8K footage in DJI Mimo app is currently supported only on iPhone 15 Pro series and later models, and support for other devices is subject to future app updates.” If you use another phone, plan to transfer files to a computer or work in a lower-resolution mode until your device and the app support the footage. Confirm compatibility before buying on the assumption that 8K will be editable on any recent phone.
Choose GoPro HERO13 Black if these are your priorities
You prefer 5.3K60, 4K120 or 1080p240
GoPro lists 5.3K at 60 fps, 4K at 120 fps, 2.7K at 120 fps and 1080p at 240 fps. Those modes suit fast action, smooth slow motion and projects that prioritize frame rate over maximum spatial resolution. GoPro also advertises short-burst slow motion at 400 fps in 720p, 360 fps in 900p or 120 fps in 5.3K for the specified burst durations. The resolution and duration matter: these are not unlimited recording modes.
You already use GoPro mounts or need flexible mounting
HERO13 Black has magnetic mounting, built-in mounting fingers and 1/4-20 tripod threads. That combination lets you move between magnetic mounts, traditional fingers and standard tripod hardware without relying on one adapter for every setup. If your existing helmet, chest, vehicle or tripod rig is built around GoPro hardware, changing systems may cost more and add friction than the camera price alone suggests.
You will use interchangeable lens mods
GoPro identifies HB-Series macro, ultra-wide and anamorphic lens mods, along with a Smart Motion Blur ND filter pack. These accessories are useful for specific jobs: macro for close subjects, ultra-wide for a broader perspective, anamorphic for a stylized aspect ratio and ND filters for controlling shutter speed in bright conditions. They add cost, carrying requirements and compatibility checks, so buy them only when the shot you want requires them.
You want Quik-based editing, sync and overlays
GoPro lists HLG HDR, 10-bit color, GP-Log, timecode synchronization through Quik, Bluetooth audio support and GPS-data overlays through Quik. This is a workflow advantage for creators who already organize footage, synchronize cameras or add telemetry in GoPro’s software. Feature names do not prove that one camera has better color or audio; verify that your editor, phone and intended delivery format support the chosen profile.
Resolution, frame rates and editing restrictions
Choose the mode that matches your final delivery, not the largest number on the box. For a 4K timeline, Action 6’s 8K can provide cropping latitude, but the mode’s 16:9-only framing and stabilization restrictions may be inconvenient. GoPro’s 5.3K60 provides a substantial oversampling margin for 4K while retaining 60 fps, and its 4K120 and 1080p240 modes make high-speed action straightforward.

Waterproofing: what the numbers do and do not tell you
DJI’s published figures are 20 m without a case and 60 m with the Waterproof Case, with an IP68 rating stated for the camera and case. GoPro describes HERO13 Black as waterproof to 33 ft and lists a water-repelling replaceable lens cover. The test conditions and manufacturer instructions are not identical, so do not convert the numbers into a laboratory ranking.
For swimming, rain and ordinary splash exposure, either camera may fit if used within its instructions. For prolonged underwater work, depth beyond the body-only rating or high-impact water, Action 6 requires attention to the case recommendation. In every case, rinse and dry the camera as directed, check the lens cover and doors, and never assume a previous successful dive proves a damaged or improperly closed seal is safe.

Action 6 offers RockSteady 3.0, RockSteady 3.0+, HorizonBalancing and HorizonSteady. DJI applies resolution and frame-rate restrictions to some horizon functions, so check the exact mode before planning a shot that must remain level. HERO13 Black uses HyperSmooth 6.0. The official pages establish the feature lists, not a controlled head-to-head result.
Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison reported that DJI had caught up in stabilization in the guide author’s testing and praised GoPro’s stabilization. Treat that as an attributed editorial judgment rather than a universal performance guarantee. Mount choice, shutter speed, lighting and the selected stabilization mode can change the result.
Lens flexibility is a different decision. DJI’s listed 155-degree view and variable aperture are built into the camera. GoPro’s HB-Series system lets you add macro, ultra-wide, anamorphic or ND capabilities when needed. A fixed built-in setup is simpler; a modular lens system is more adaptable but costs more and creates more parts to protect.
Low light, screens and audio workflow
Action 6 has front and rear touchscreens measuring 1.46 inches and 2.5 inches, respectively, plus three microphones. Its variable aperture can be adjusted between f/2.0 and f/4.0. These specifications help with framing and exposure decisions, but they do not establish final low-light noise, dynamic range or microphone quality.

HERO13 Black’s documented workflow features include HLG HDR, 10-bit color, GP-Log, Bluetooth audio, Quik timecode synchronization and GPS overlays. Choose GoPro when those tools fit your existing production process. Choose DJI when the dual-screen layout, sensor and aperture combination better match your shooting routine. For either camera, confirm wireless-audio compatibility, app support and the color-management steps required by your editor before committing to a log or HDR workflow.

DJI runtime and storage
Tom’s Guide reported 120 minutes of Action 6 recording at 4K/60 and 93 minutes at 8K/30 in its testing. These are publication test results, not a guaranteed battery rating; temperature, stabilization, screen brightness, wireless connections and card behavior can change runtime. DJI supports microSD cards up to 1 TB and specifies U3, A2, V30 microSDXC cards, including particular compatible models.
GoPro runtime and battery compatibility
GoPro says the 1,900 mAh Enduro battery can deliver up to 2.5 hours of continuous recording. That is a manufacturer maximum, not a promise for every resolution, temperature or configuration. GoPro also says the HERO13 Black Enduro battery is not compatible with older GoPro cameras. If you own an earlier model, budget for the correct battery rather than assuming your existing spares will work.

Planning for long shoots
- Carry charged spare batteries and a card with the required speed rating.
- Test your chosen resolution, frame rate and stabilization mode before an important event.
- Allow for heat, cold, screen use and wireless transfers when estimating runtime.
- Format cards in the camera and maintain a second copy of important footage.
Mounts, accessories and total system cost
The camera body is only part of the purchase. Action 6 buyers should match a U3 A2 V30 microSDXC card to DJI’s compatibility list. The Waterproof Case is a targeted accessory for extended underwater or high-water-impact use, not a mandatory purchase for every wet-weather user.
HERO13 Black buyers may need an Enduro spare battery, GoPro-compatible mounts or HB-Series lenses. Macro, ultra-wide, anamorphic and ND options solve different creative problems; do not pay for a lens that will stay in a drawer. Check that every accessory is designed for HERO13 Black, because physical fit and electronic support can differ between generations.
No dependable, comparable current US price was established for both cameras in the available manufacturer pages. Prices, bundles, stock and service terms change. Check each maker’s US store or a named authorized US retailer immediately before purchase, record the date and compare like-for-like bundles rather than a bare camera against a kit.
US availability and support caveat
Tom’s Guide reported that DJI did not have first-party camera support in the United States at the time of its guide. That is a dated editorial report, not proof that the situation is unchanged. Before ordering an Action 6 in the US, confirm current DJI support, warranty coverage, repair routes and the seller’s return policy. A lower purchase price can be poor value if replacement or service requires cross-border shipping.
Which camera should you buy?
Buy DJI Osmo Action 6 when…
- You specifically need 8K/24–30 capture and have a compatible editing path.
- You value a 20 m body-only rating or 60 m rating with DJI’s case.
- You want the listed 1/1.1-inch sensor, variable aperture and dual touchscreens.
- You will use DJI’s accessory and app ecosystem and have verified regional support.
Buy GoPro HERO13 Black when…
- You need 5.3K60, 4K120 or 1080p240 more than 8K capture.
- You already own GoPro mounts or want magnetic mounting, built-in fingers and 1/4-20 threads.
- You plan to use HB-Series macro, ultra-wide, anamorphic or ND accessories.
- You want Quik features such as timecode synchronization, GPS overlays or the documented HDR/log workflow.
When neither specification settles it
Borrow or buy from a retailer with a clear return policy, then test the exact mode you will use: walk or ride with stabilization enabled, record in your normal light, transfer files to your actual phone or computer, and check the mounting hardware you already own. That practical test is more informative than treating 8K, waterproof depth or a battery maximum as a universal winner.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does 8K automatically make the DJI Osmo Action 6 better than the GoPro HERO13 Black?
No. Action 6’s 8K mode is limited to 16:9, has restricted stabilization and field-of-view options, disables some processing features and has limited DJI Mimo device support. HERO13 Black’s 5.3K60, 4K120 and established lens and mounting system may better fit your work.
Can I use an older GoPro Enduro battery in the HERO13 Black?
GoPro states that the HERO13 Black 1,900 mAh Enduro battery is not compatible with older GoPro cameras.
Do I need the DJI Waterproof Case for swimming?
Not necessarily. DJI lists 20 m waterproofing without the case, but recommends the case for extended underwater recording or high water-impact conditions. Follow DJI’s depth, seal and liquid-environment instructions.
