Divers working an exclusive salvage site off Florida’s Atlantic coast recovered 214 coins and other artifacts in a few days, according to a June 22, 2024 report by Fox News. The haul is also described in a 2026 report as more than 200 silver cob coins. The objects came from wrecks of Spain’s 1715 treasure fleet, destroyed by a hurricane shortly after leaving Cuba.
What the divers found
The reported recovery totaled 214 coins and other artifacts. Coverage of the same operation has summarized the find as more than 200 silver cob coins, so the two descriptions should not be treated as competing counts: 214 is the specific figure reported for coins and artifacts together, while “over 200 silver cob coins” is the broader shorthand used in later coverage.

Silver cob coins were struck for the Spanish Empire and commonly cut by hand from irregularly shaped pieces of silver. Their uneven edges and partial designs are typical of coins made during the period, not necessarily signs of modern damage. Individual condition, rarity, mint, markings and legal disposition would be needed before assigning a reliable market value.

The fleet sailed from Cuba for Spain in July 1715, carrying wealth gathered in the Americas. The National Park Service describes these armed treasure fleets as the Spanish system for moving New World silver, gold, gemstones, tobacco, spices and indigo across the Atlantic.

A hurricane struck off Florida. Miguel de Lima, owner of the Urca de Lima, later described the sun disappearing, winds strengthening from the east and east-northeast, and huge seas pushing ships toward shallow water. The storm wrecked the fleet along Florida’s coast, where the remains later became underwater archaeological preserves.

How quickly was the recovery made?
Captain Grant Gitschlag said the quantity recovered in a couple of days was an “exciting start,” while emphasizing that salvors always hope for a discovery of this scale without expecting it. The wording means the 214-item haul was collected during only a short initial period of work; it does not establish how long the team had held rights to the site, how many dives were made, or how much additional searching preceded those days.

- 【Dive Into Deeper Waters With Confidence】 The Hazlewolke WP6027 underwater metal detector features a tough waterproof shell that can withstand depths of up to 130 feet (40 meters), making it perfect for beach detecting, lake diving, or river searches. All parts are specially treated to resist saltwater corrosion, ensuring it stays durable and reliable in even the harshest environments.
- 【Go Deeper And Find More With Ease】Thanks to our ultra-low frequency technology, operating at just 2.4kHz, the WP6027 metal detector for adults has exceptional penetration power. This means you can detect deeper, buried metals. Even in challenging underwater conditions, this detector picks up treasures that others miss, so you can dive deeper into your search.
- 【Get Real-Time, Clear Alerts】The WP6027 metal detector’s smart feedback system combines audio and LED signals to give you instant feedback about your findings. Low-conductivity metals trigger a deep, low-pitched tone with a flashing red light, while higher-conductivity targets like gold or silver give off a sharp, high-pitched tone and a blue flashing light. It’s an easy way to know exactly what you’re digging for, without even looking at the screen.
- 【Customize Sensitivity & Discrimination to Your Hunt】Take control of your search with adjustable sensitivity and discrimination settings. Increase sensitivity to pinpoint smaller or deeper objects with more accuracy, or use the discrimination mode to filter out common junk items like bottle caps and nails. This helps you focus on valuable finds like coins and gold, or artifacts, saving time and effort.
- 【Not Just For Underwater】This WP6027 waterproof metal detector is a versatile detector that performs well in all kinds of environments. Whether you're searching the damp sands of the beach, the wet coastline, or mineralized soils, it handles it all with ease. From salty ocean water to freshwater lakes and even rivers, this detector is ready for whatever adventure you’re embarking on.
Treasure-fleet sites can spread debris across the seabed after centuries of storms, currents and earlier salvage. A short burst of finds therefore does not indicate that every remaining coin is concentrated in one location.

Fox News identified Sal Guttuso’s 1715 Fleet Queen’s Jewels LLC as the exclusive salvor and U.S. District Court custodian for the project. “Exclusive salvor” describes the reported legal role for recovering material at that site; it is not the same as saying every recovered object has been privately sold or that a final ownership ruling applies to all 1715 Fleet wrecks.

Rights, custody, conservation obligations and any eventual division of artifacts depend on court orders and applicable maritime and cultural-resource law. The project’s website is the named online source for the operation, but current access terms and any commercial arrangements require separate verification.
What makes the discovery historically important?
A direct link to a documented disaster
The coins are physical evidence from a fleet whose loss was recorded as a major Spanish maritime catastrophe. Eleven of twelve ships went down and nearly 900 people died, turning the wreck area into both a treasure site and a mass-loss historical site.

Evidence of Atlantic trade
The fleet existed to carry American colonial wealth to Spain. Coins recovered from the wrecks can help connect minting, imperial finance, shipping routes and the material conditions aboard the ships, even when an individual coin has little commercial value.

Archaeology rather than a simple treasure hunt
Underwater context matters. A coin’s position relative to hull timbers, ballast, cargo and other objects can reveal how a ship broke apart and how material moved after the hurricane. Removing objects without recording their location can destroy information that cannot be recovered from the artifact alone.

How valuable are the Spanish shipwreck coins?
No reliable total value for the 214-item recovery has been established in the available reporting. The often-repeated figure of roughly 14 million pesos refers to an estimate of the fleet’s lost treasure in 1715, not an appraisal of this modern find. A defensible valuation would require authenticated inventories, conservation records, provenance, rarity assessments and clarification of what may legally be sold.
That is why headlines about “treasure” should not be read as a confirmed payout. Some objects may be historically significant but commercially restricted, while others may require lengthy conservation before their condition is known.
Quick Recap
What happens to recovered coins?
- Recovery and documentation: Divers record the location and condition of each object before it is moved.
- Stabilization: Saltwater-soaked silver and associated materials are treated to limit corrosion and preserve surfaces.
- Identification: Conservators and specialists examine dates, mint marks, denominations and links to the fleet.
- Legal review: Custody, ownership, reporting and any permitted disposition are handled under the governing court and salvage framework.
- Interpretation: Objects that remain in collections can contribute to the archaeological record of the 1715 disaster.
What is confirmed—and what is not
- Confirmed in the cited reports: 214 coins and other artifacts were recovered from a 1715 Fleet salvage site off Florida in a couple of days.
