Windows Insider Preview builds may work, but Wagnardsoft says they are used at the user’s own risk. Do not rename DDU 18.1.5.6 as “18.5,” and do not trust an unofficial download simply because its filename contains 18.5.

- Open Wagnardsoft’s official website and locate the Display Driver Uninstaller download or official version-index page.
- Confirm that the page identifies the publisher as Wagnardsoft/Wagnard and that the version is 18.1.5.6, not an unexplained “18.5” build.

What DDU does—and what it does not do
DDU is designed to remove graphics-driver packages and associated remnants, including relevant files, folders, registry entries, and driver-store components. The goal is to leave Windows in a state similar to a fresh driver installation from the graphics-driver perspective.

- A normal driver uninstall fails or leaves the system unstable.
- A graphics driver is corrupted and a clean reinstall is needed.
- You are changing from one GPU brand to another, such as NVIDIA to AMD.
- Repeated driver installation attempts produce crashes, black screens, installation errors, or missing control-panel features.
DDU is not a graphics-driver installer or updater. You must download the replacement driver separately from the GPU manufacturer or your computer manufacturer. DDU should not be treated as a mandatory step for every ordinary driver update; Wagnardsoft specifically cautions against routine use when there is no driver problem or brand change.
Before you start: prepare the replacement driver and recovery options
1. Download the new driver first
Before running DDU, download the correct replacement driver and save it locally. Use the official support page for your NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel hardware, or the support page for the PC or laptop manufacturer.

Having the installer ready matters because DDU removes the current graphics-driver software, while Windows may temporarily run on a basic display driver after the restart. It also avoids searching for a driver while the internet is disconnected.
2. Create a restore point or backup
Wagnardsoft recommends creating a system restore point or backup before using DDU. This is particularly important on a working computer, a production machine, or a laptop with manufacturer-specific graphics drivers.

3. Have your Windows password and BitLocker recovery key available
Safe Mode can expose sign-in and disk-encryption issues that do not appear during a normal restart:
- On Windows 11 version 24H2, Windows Hello-only sign-in settings can cause problems signing into Safe Mode. Know the account’s actual password, not only its PIN, fingerprint, or face sign-in. Wagnardsoft also advises using the password at least once in normal Windows mode and adjusting the relevant sign-in setting if necessary.
- If BitLocker is enabled, locate the BitLocker recovery key before restarting into Safe Mode. Keep it available in case Windows requests recovery authentication.
4. Extract DDU to a local drive
Extract or install DDU on a local drive such as the system drive or another internal disk. Wagnardsoft states that DDU will not work from a network drive. A local folder such as C:ToolsDDU is suitable; the exact folder name is not important.
Recommended DDU workflow
- Disconnect the internet. Turn off Wi-Fi, unplug Ethernet, or otherwise prevent Windows Update from automatically installing a graphics driver during the cleanup and restart. Reconnect only after the replacement driver is installed.
- Start Safe Mode when possible. Wagnardsoft says DDU can work in normal mode, but Safe Mode is preferred for maximum stability because fewer driver-related components are active.
- Launch DDU from the local extracted folder. Read any warning shown by the program before proceeding.
- Choose the device type and vendor. Select the GPU device type, then choose the vendor whose driver you want to remove: NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel. Be careful not to select the wrong manufacturer.
- Use the appropriate clean-and-restart option. For a normal clean reinstall, the relevant choice is generally the option to clean and restart. Other options may shut down the PC or leave it running and should be used only when their result is specifically needed.
- Wait for Windows to restart. The first display after cleanup may use Microsoft’s basic display driver and may have a different resolution. That is expected while the vendor driver is absent.
- Install the replacement driver. Run the official driver installer you downloaded earlier. Choose the vendor’s clean-install option too if its installer provides one and that is appropriate for your situation.
- Reconnect the internet. Once the replacement driver is installed and Windows is stable, restore the network connection.
- Restart and verify. Confirm the correct driver appears in Device Manager or the vendor’s control application, then test the display, GPU-accelerated applications, games, audio output, and any monitors.

- Open Settings.
- In Windows 11, go to System > Recovery. In Windows 10, go to Update & Security > Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now.
- After the recovery menu appears, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the next restart, choose the Safe Mode option, commonly by pressing 4 or F4.
If you cannot sign in because Windows expects a PIN or another Windows Hello method, use the account password. If BitLocker recovery appears, enter the recovery key rather than repeatedly restarting.

Wagnardsoft’s release notes for 18.1.5.6 list several changes, including:
- Support for LISUAN 7G100-series GPUs.
- Cleanup of MMDevices endpoints.
- Improvements to removal of
PnpLockdownFilesandRemoveInstalledPfns. - A Reset to recommended button in Options.
These changes do not turn DDU into a driver updater. The program’s primary purpose remains driver cleanup.
After DDU: optional tools for driver inventory and backups
If your goal is to remove a broken graphics driver, DDU is the specialist tool in this workflow. If you later want automated driver inventory, update recommendations, or backup and restore features, an optional automated driver updater alternative may be useful. Outbyte describes its Driver Updater as providing automated scanning, driver recommendations, and backup/restore functionality; those are the vendor’s stated capabilities, not requirements for using DDU.

DDU says it cannot run or does not start
- Confirm that the files were fully extracted rather than opened inside a compressed archive.
- Move the extracted folder to a local drive. Do not run it from a network location.
- Confirm that Microsoft .NET Framework 4.8 or later is installed.
- Download the software again from the official Wagnardsoft source if the archive appears damaged or incomplete.
Windows reinstalls a graphics driver immediately
Windows Update may have inserted a driver because the computer remained online during the process. Disconnect the network before running DDU, clean and restart, install the prepared official driver, and reconnect only afterward.
The screen resolution is wrong after cleanup
This is normally expected when the vendor driver has been removed. Install the prepared AMD, NVIDIA, Intel, or computer-manufacturer driver, then restart.

The problem continues after reinstalling the driver
A clean driver installation cannot repair every cause of display failure. Check for BIOS or firmware updates from the computer or motherboard manufacturer, test the display cable and monitor, check temperatures and power connections, and look for hardware errors. If Windows problems extend beyond the display driver, a broader Windows repair utility may be relevant, but it should not be presented as a guaranteed fix for a GPU-driver failure. Should DDU be run before every driver update?
No. Use it when a normal update or uninstall has failed, when remnants are causing a problem, or when changing GPU vendors. Running deep cleanup before every routine update adds unnecessary steps and can remove settings or components you did not need to remove.
Is DDU 18.1.5.6 safe to use?
DDU is a powerful system-cleanup utility, so it should be used deliberately and with a restore point or backup. Do I have to use Safe Mode?
Safe Mode is preferred by Wagnardsoft for maximum stability, although DDU can work in normal mode. Use Safe Mode when possible, and prepare your Windows password and BitLocker recovery key first.
