Disney’s “new game” is Smugglers Gambit, a Disney-built Star Wars island inside Fortnite—not a separate console or PC release. Launched on August 16, 2026, it extends the Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run attraction at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort into a connected Fortnite adventure. Park guests who link eligible MyDisney and Epic accounts can turn ride performance into in-game credits and unlock the Forsworn Trooper outfit. Players who have never visited a Disney park can still play the island and earn its Gambit 2D Loading Screen.
The practical comparison is therefore a focused, cooperative Star Wars experience versus Fortnite’s much larger platform of Battle Royale, creator-made islands, social features and digital commerce. Both use Epic’s account, moderation and parental-control systems. Disney adds themed missions, reputation progression and park-linked rewards; it does not replace Fortnite’s wider ecosystem.

What Disney’s “new game” actually is
As of October 17, 2026, Smugglers Gambit is an in-house Disney Games and Digital Entertainment island that runs within Fortnite. Calling it a “Disney Fortnite game” is understandable, but calling it a standalone game is inaccurate: players enter through Fortnite, use Fortnite accounts and play under Fortnite’s platform rules.
The island is set around Mers(a) Veta Station on Ord Ryla. Disney describes a Star Wars adventure in which crews accept missions, fight pirates and Imperial remnants, encounter dangerous wildlife, unlock gear and build a reputation across the Outer Rim. Hondo Ohnaka is part of the experience’s narrative identity, giving the missions a specific Star Wars tone rather than the open-ended variety of Fortnite’s broader platform.

Its unusual feature is the physical-to-digital connection. A guest can accept a mission in the Disneyland app or the My Disney Experience app before riding Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run, complete the attraction, and carry ride-linked rewards into Fortnite. The attraction connection launched August 16, 2026. Disney and Epic describe it as the first extension of that attraction beyond the physical ride into a connected digital adventure.
You do not need a park visit to enter the island. Disney says any Fortnite player can complete a Smugglers Gambit quest for the Gambit 2D Loading Screen. Park attendance matters only for the ride-linked mission and rewards, not for basic access to the digital island.

This distinction answers the common question “Is Disney making a game like Fortnite?” Disney is building an experience on Fortnite’s technology and audience, not launching a competing general-purpose platform.

Missions and cooperative play
The island’s primary loop is mission-based cooperation. You team up with friends, take on objectives around Mers(a) Veta Station, battle hostile groups and dangerous wildlife, and earn progress toward a stronger reputation. Disney’s descriptions emphasize crews and cooperative missions rather than a last-player-standing format. The design is consequently closer to a themed co-op adventure than to Fortnite Battle Royale.
Gear unlocks give missions a progression layer. The available material establishes that players unlock gear and reputation, but it does not publish a complete item catalogue, statistical balance sheet or progression timetable. Treat any third-party claims about maximum levels, drop rates or best equipment as unverified unless Disney or Epic documents them.
Star Wars setting and story focus
Smugglers Gambit is tightly framed around the Outer Rim, pirates, Imperial remnants and Hondo Ohnaka. That narrow theme is its advantage for players who want a coherent Star Wars adventure. Fortnite’s platform, by contrast, can move between unrelated official properties and creator concepts; its stories and mechanics vary by island.

The attraction handoff
The connected sequence is designed for eligible riders at Disneyland Resort and Walt Disney World Resort:
- Open the Disneyland app or My Disney Experience app and accept the available Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run mission before riding.
- Link the required MyDisney and Epic accounts when prompted by the Disney experience.
- Complete the physical attraction and its ride mission.
- Return to Fortnite and use the resulting ride-linked credits and eligible rewards, including the Forsworn Trooper outfit described by Epic.
Disney and Epic describe account-linking eligibility and reward windows as changeable. Check the current in-app instructions at the park; a linked account or a ride score alone should not be assumed to qualify outside the stated window or region.
Playing without visiting a park
A Fortnite player can enter Smugglers Gambit remotely, complete its quest content and receive the Gambit 2D Loading Screen. The remote route gives access to the island’s gameplay but not the physical ride score, attraction mission or rewards reserved for eligible guests. No park admission is needed for the non-ride quest described by Disney.

Smugglers Gambit is therefore complementary to Fortnite rather than a replacement for it. A player can spend an evening in the Disney island and then move to Battle Royale or a creator-made island without changing platforms.
Access, accounts and what you need
For a regular Fortnite player
- A Fortnite installation on a supported platform and an Epic account.
- Internet access and the normal Fortnite account age and consent requirements.
- Access to the Smugglers Gambit island through Fortnite’s current discovery or island interface.
- No Disneyland Resort or Walt Disney World Resort visit for the ordinary quest and Gambit 2D Loading Screen.
For a park guest seeking ride-linked rewards
- Admission and access to Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run at Disneyland Resort or Walt Disney World Resort.
- The relevant Disneyland app or My Disney Experience app.
- Eligible MyDisney and Epic accounts linked according to the current in-app instructions.
- Completion of the attraction mission during the published eligibility and reward period.
The supplied official descriptions do not state a separate Smugglers Gambit purchase price. They also do not establish a universal total cost for playing Fortnite, because device, platform, park admission and optional digital purchases differ. Treat “free” claims cautiously: remote island access is described, but current platform requirements and any account restrictions still apply.
Safety and parental controls
Smugglers Gambit inherits Fortnite’s safety tools rather than operating a separate child-safety system. Epic’s Safety and Security Center documents the controls available to families, but those controls are policies and features—not proof of a measured safety outcome for this particular island.

Cabined Accounts
Epic’s Cabined Accounts allow younger players to play Fortnite while restricting certain features until a parent or guardian provides consent. Voice chat is one example of a feature that can remain unavailable until consent is completed. The account can therefore support age-appropriate play without automatically enabling every communication function.
Voice chat and social exposure
Parents can manage voice-chat settings. Review the setting for the child’s account before cooperative play, and remember that a child’s experience can change when joining a party or moving between islands. Smugglers Gambit’s co-op design makes communication useful, but voice access is optional and subject to the account’s consent status.
Purchases and spending controls
Epic provides an option to require a PIN for purchases. Enable that control if a child uses an account with access to V-Bucks or other digital items. A purchase PIN reduces accidental or unauthorized spending; it does not turn digital items into refundable physical goods or establish a spending limit by itself.

Epic documents in-game reporting, sanctions and appeals, community rules and account-security guidance, including two-factor authentication. Families should use the reporting flow for conduct that violates the rules and secure the account with a unique password and two-factor authentication. These tools address moderation and account access; they cannot guarantee that every interaction is appropriate.
A practical family checklist
- Confirm the child’s account age and whether it is Cabined.
- Set voice chat to the level your household permits.
- Require a purchase PIN before adding or spending V-Bucks.
- Explain how to block or report another player and where to leave a party.
- Enable two-factor authentication and protect the account email.
- Check the settings again after major Fortnite updates, platform changes or account-linking steps.
No independent study or controlled test has published a child-safety rate, retention measure or measured harm outcome for Smugglers Gambit. The responsible conclusion is that documented controls are available, while the real-world result depends on settings, supervision, player behavior and enforcement.
How the money works
Player-facing digital economy
Fortnite’s economy is digital. Epic’s policy documentation covers V-Bucks, V-Bucks cards and digital durable or consumable items. Smugglers Gambit adds themed cosmetics and account-linked rewards to that environment, but the available material does not state a separate entry fee, item price list, average spend or total cost for the island.

Several figures in Epic’s 2025 policy announcement describe how money is distributed inside Fortnite. They are not discounts for players:

The 100% figure is time-limited and should not be read as a permanent share. The 12%–30% range reflects platform economics, not the percentage of every purchase that Disney receives. Smugglers Gambit’s exact revenue split, item prices and Disney royalty terms are not published in the supplied material.
V-Bucks cards and buying decisions
Epic documents V-Bucks cards, but retail stock, denominations, regional restrictions and any affiliate eligibility can change. Verify the current card terms and the recipient’s platform region before buying. A card adds V-Bucks to Fortnite’s digital economy; it does not purchase park admission or guarantee a ride-linked Disney reward.

The broader investment
In 2024, The Walt Disney Company invested $1.5 billion in Epic as part of a planned games and entertainment universe spanning Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, Avatar and other properties. Disney chief executive Bob Iger described the move as the company’s biggest entry into games and as an opportunity for growth and expansion. That investment explains why Disney is treating Fortnite as infrastructure for several kinds of interaction rather than only as a place to run a single event.

Evidence from earlier Fortnite collaborations
Associated Press reported that a 2024 Marvel Nexus War with Galactus exceeded 15.3 million concurrent players. That is a historical peak for an earlier Disney/Epic collaboration, not a Smugglers Gambit player count and not evidence of this island’s retention or popularity.

In April 2025, Epic and Disney placed the first two episodes of Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld inside Fortnite before the Disney+ debut. The activation also enabled MyDisney/Epic account linking for a First Order Stormtrooper outfit. It demonstrated the same strategy used by Smugglers Gambit: Fortnite can host play, viewing and account-linked rewards in one environment.
What Smugglers Gambit adds
Disney’s 2026 D23 messaging calls the island the first extension of Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run beyond the physical attraction into a connected digital Fortnite adventure, built in-house by Disney Games. Adam Sussman of Epic described Imagineers shaping experiences that move from the physical world into Fortnite. Sean Shoptaw of Disney Games and Digital Entertainment said the attraction mission extends into a connected digital adventure and deepens how guests engage with both experiences.
The strategic value is continuity: a park visit can create a digital follow-up, while a Fortnite player can encounter Disney storytelling without traveling. Whether that continuity becomes a durable habit is unknown; no independent retention, average-spend or repeat-visit study is provided.
Which experience should you choose?
Choose Smugglers Gambit when
- You want a focused Star Wars setting instead of a rotating catalogue of unrelated modes.
- You prefer cooperative missions, reputation building and gear progression.
- You are visiting Disneyland Resort or Walt Disney World Resort and want the ride-to-game handoff.
- You value themed cosmetics and account-linked rewards more than competitive Battle Royale play.
- You want friends to share a clearly defined objective rather than select from thousands of creator concepts.
Choose broader Fortnite play when
- You want Battle Royale or a large range of official and creator-made islands.
- You prefer switching genres, communities and rulesets without staying in one Star Wars storyline.
- You do not care about a Disney park connection or ride-linked rewards.
- You want the full Fortnite social and creator ecosystem, including experiences unrelated to Disney.
For families deciding together
Start with the account settings, not the brand name. Configure Cabined Account consent, voice chat, purchase PIN and reporting access first. Then decide whether the child benefits from a bounded co-op mission or from Fortnite’s wider menu. A narrower island can be easier to explain, but it still uses the same online interactions and digital economy as Fortnite.
What is established—and what is not
Established information includes the island’s August 16, 2026 launch connection, its Mers(a) Veta Station setting, co-op mission and reputation loop, optional park handoff, named rewards, Epic’s account and safety controls, and the creator-economy figures in Epic’s 2025 policy.
Not established in the available official material are an independent safety measurement, average child play time, retention, average spend, a direct Smugglers Gambit price, a complete gear or quest catalogue, Disney’s exact share of item revenue, or a total-cost comparison with Fortnite overall. Those gaps matter when interpreting claims that the island is “safer,” “free,” more profitable or more popular than Fortnite. The defensible comparison is about design, access and documented policies—not unmeasured outcomes.
