Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the better default choice for most Nintendo Switch owners. It delivers the polished, traditional kart-racing formula, substantial couch multiplayer, and a premium package that remains usable without a live-service economy. Disney Speedstorm is the stronger alternative if you need a free starting point, play with friends on different platforms, or specifically want Disney and Pixar characters with individual abilities in a combat-racing format.
The choice is less about which game is universally superior and more about what you value: a stable Nintendo party game or a cross-platform, continually expanding racer that costs nothing to download but includes optional purchases, including paid random items.

What kind of game is Disney Speedstorm?
Disney Speedstorm is an arcade combat racer built around recognizable Disney and Pixar racers. Each racer has upgradeable skills, so selecting a character affects more than appearance: it changes how you approach attacks, defense, boosts and overtaking opportunities.

The driving model combines drifting and nitro management with combat abilities. Tracks use dynamic environments inspired by Disney and Pixar worlds, so hazards and visual changes are part of the race rather than merely decoration. Customization and crew systems add longer-term progression beyond a single event.
Gameloft describes the game as a cross-platform free-to-play racer and says new racers and racetracks are added regularly. That makes Speedstorm a living game rather than a fixed release with a finished roster. The benefit is a stream of new content; the trade-off is that the available progression, events and purchase options can change over time.
What kind of game is Mario Kart 8 Deluxe?
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is Nintendo’s established item-based kart racer for Switch. Its core loop is deliberately legible: choose a Nintendo character and kart setup, race through a course, collect items, and use positioning and timing to win. Grand Prix provides structured cups, while VS Race supports custom race rules and Battle modes offer arena-style competition.

That consistency is a major reason it works for mixed-skill groups. A new player can understand the objective within one race, while experienced players can spend years refining drifting, shortcuts, defensive item use and route choices. The game does not require learning a separate ability kit for every racer.
How much does each game cost?
Disney Speedstorm’s free entry
The official platform description labels Disney Speedstorm “FREE TO PLAY* ON MOBILE, PC & CONSOLE.” You can download and start without buying the game. The same notice warns: “THIS GAME CONTAINS IN-APP PURCHASES, INCLUDING PAID RANDOM ITEMS.” Optional purchases therefore form part of the game’s economy even though the initial download costs nothing.
Free entry is valuable when you want to test the handling, play briefly, or join friends without coordinating a purchase. It also means you should explain the purchase model before handing the game to a child and review the platform account’s spending controls. The free label should not be read as a promise that every character, cosmetic or progression shortcut is obtained without payment.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s premium structure
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe requires purchasing the game. The exact retail price depends on country, seller and promotion, so no single universal figure is published. Once owned, the core game presents a comparatively clear premium structure rather than a rotating free-to-play store.

Which platforms support each racer?
Speedstorm’s broad reach
Speedstorm is listed for PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, mobile devices, the Epic Games Store and the Microsoft Store. Gameloft’s September 28, 2023 free-to-play announcement specifically describes console and PC availability across Nintendo Switch, Xbox, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and PC. The platform page’s wording also covers mobile.
That spread matters if your group owns different hardware. A Switch player can race with someone on PlayStation, Xbox, PC or a supported mobile device rather than buying the same console.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s Switch focus
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is a Nintendo Switch title. Its narrow platform range can be a limitation for cross-device groups, but it also gives the game a consistent control environment and makes it an obvious choice for a household already using Switch consoles for local play.

Yes. Gameloft describes Disney Speedstorm as supporting cross-platform play, and the game’s official launch announcement says the free-to-play move allows players around the world to race against each other. Cross-platform support is the decisive advantage when friends are split among Switch, Xbox, PlayStation, PC and mobile.

Cross-platform availability does not remove every practical requirement. Each player still needs a supported platform, a connection suitable for online racing and whatever account or age settings that platform requires. The cited official listings establish cross-play support, but they do not specify a single universal procedure for linking accounts or transferring every item between platforms.
How do the driving systems differ?
Speedstorm: abilities plus traditional racing skills
Speedstorm layers character abilities over drifting and nitro timing. Winning involves choosing when to activate a skill, defending against an opponent’s attack, and maintaining speed through turns. Because skills are upgradeable, progression can influence how a racer performs as well as how that racer looks.
This creates more moment-to-moment decisions than a purely item-driven race. It also increases the learning curve: a player who changes characters may need to learn a new ability pattern, upgrade path and preferred race strategy.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe uses the familiar item-box system. The tension comes from deciding when to spend an item, protect yourself, attack a rival or hold an item for defense. Drifting and track knowledge still matter, but the rules remain stable across the roster.
That stability makes Mario Kart especially effective for parties. Skill differences remain visible, yet newcomers can contribute immediately because they do not have to study a character-specific ability tree before competing.
Which game is better for multiplayer?
Local play
PlayStation’s current Disney Speedstorm listing specifies one to four local players. It also lists up to eight online players. This makes Speedstorm suitable for a small couch group while retaining the option to invite people remotely.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is built around local Nintendo multiplayer and supports the game’s Grand Prix, VS Race and Battle formats on Switch. Nintendo’s official information emphasizes the breadth of its local and online modes rather than a single universal player-count figure in the supplied material. For a family room or party, the important distinction is that Mario Kart’s local experience is a central feature rather than an accessory to online progression.
Online play
Speedstorm’s cross-platform online model is the better fit for a geographically dispersed group or friends with different hardware. The PlayStation listing’s eight-player online figure gives a concrete indication of the supported race size on that platform.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe online Grand Prix, VS Race and Battle modes require Nintendo Switch Online membership. If you already pay for that service, the requirement may be routine; if you only want occasional online races, it is an additional recurring consideration.

Speedstorm’s evolving catalog
Speedstorm’s content model is ongoing. Gameloft says new Disney and Pixar racers and racetracks are added regularly, while the platform descriptions highlight continuing customization and changing track environments. This is attractive if you want seasonal goals, new characters and a reason to return after the initial download.
The drawback is that the experience is not a fixed checklist. Content availability, progression priorities and purchase offers can change, so the game rewards players who enjoy following an active service rather than buying once and ignoring updates.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsMario Kart’s fixed game plus Booster Course Pass
Nintendo documents 48 additional courses and eight additional characters through the Booster Course Pass. Nintendo Support describes the pass as six waves of eight courses. The result is a large, defined expansion that can be evaluated before purchase instead of a schedule of future additions.
Best Value
- Hit the road with the definitive version of Mario Kart 8 and play anytime, anywhere! Race your friends or battle them in a revised battle mode on new and returning battle courses

- Players can choose a new Smart Steering feature which makes driving and staying on the track easy for novice players and kids even at 200cc
The pass is optional: the base game remains the entry point, and the expansion is most useful for players who want more track variety, additional characters and a longer offline rotation. Expansion access through Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack lasts only while that membership is active.
Which game has the clearer progression model?
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is easier to understand as a complete package. You buy the game, unlock or select its available content through play, and decide separately whether the Booster Course Pass is worthwhile. There is no need to monitor a store economy to understand the basic competitive rules.
Speedstorm has more layered progression. Racer skills can be upgraded, and the game combines racers, crew and customization with regular additions. That structure gives dedicated players more objectives, but it also means the free download is the beginning of an evolving system rather than the entire product in a finished state.

Which racer is better value?
Value depends on how you play, not simply on the download price.
- Choose Speedstorm for minimum upfront cost: You can begin for free and discover whether the handling and combat abilities suit you before spending money.
- Choose Mario Kart for predictable ownership: The initial purchase is higher than a free download, but the basic experience is not organized around optional random-item purchases.
- Choose Speedstorm for a mixed-platform group: Cross-platform play can prevent every friend from buying the same console.
- Choose Mario Kart for frequent couch sessions: Its rules, modes and local focus make it easy to start a race with guests.
- Choose the Booster Course Pass only if you need more Mario Kart tracks: It adds 48 courses and eight characters, but it is not required to play the base game.
- Account for subscriptions: Mario Kart online modes require Nintendo Switch Online, while Expansion Pack access to the Booster Course Pass lasts only during an active membership.
Decision guide: which one should you buy?
Pick Mario Kart 8 Deluxe if…
- You own a Nintendo Switch and want the safest recommendation for family or party play.
- You prefer a polished, traditional item-based racer over character ability management.
- You want a premium game whose core rules and content are stable.
- You expect to play locally as often as you play online.
- You value Nintendo characters and are willing to pay for the game before playing.
Pick Disney Speedstorm if…
- You need a free starting point rather than an upfront game purchase.
- Your friends use different consoles, PCs or mobile devices.
- You are a Disney or Pixar fan and want character-specific skills.
- You enjoy combat racing, upgrades, customization and regularly changing content.
- You accept optional purchases, including the possibility of paid random items, as part of the free-to-play model.
If you are undecided
Start with Speedstorm when cost or cross-platform access is the deciding factor. Start with Mario Kart 8 Deluxe when local multiplayer, Nintendo presentation and a fixed premium package matter more than free entry. A Switch owner who wants both styles can treat them as complementary: Mario Kart for dependable couch sessions and Speedstorm for cross-platform Disney-themed races.
Important limitations when comparing them
Official platform and publisher pages establish availability, modes, pricing details for the Booster Course Pass, and the broad design goals described above. They do not provide a matched head-to-head review score, player-count comparison, retention study or performance benchmark. It is therefore not justified to claim that one game is objectively more popular or technically faster based on the available documentation.
Platform features can also vary by edition, region, account settings and subscription status. Check the store page for your country before purchasing, particularly if you are deciding between a direct purchase and Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack access.
