This guide interprets “Disney’s new game” as Disney Speedstorm, the Disney and Pixar arcade racer listed for Nintendo Switch 2. If you meant Disney Dreamlight Valley, Disney Illusion Island, Disney Lorcana or another Disney title, its multiplayer rules are different.
Short answer: Disney Speedstorm supports local multiplayer and online multiplayer, with cross-platform play announced by Gameloft. Nintendo’s Switch 2 listing specifies one to four players on one system and one to eight online. Xbox lists two to four local players, two to eight online players and cross-platform multiplayer. PlayStation lists one to four local players, eight online players and optional online play; online features require a PlayStation account.

At a glance: what multiplayer supports
Disney Speedstorm is built around competitive kart-style racing. You select a Disney or Pixar racer, enter tracks and compete against other drivers. “Co-op” is a common search term for playing with friends, but the official store descriptions primarily present multiplayer as racing and challenging other players rather than as a separate cooperative campaign with shared objectives.

- Online play: Store listings support races with as many as eight online players, although the minimum listed online count differs between platforms.
- Cross-play: Gameloft announced the game as cross-playable, and its FAQ says friends on other platforms can play together when cross-play is enabled.
- Offline option: PlayStation’s listing says online play is optional, so an internet connection is not required for every way of playing.
- Accounts and subscriptions: A PlayStation account is required for PlayStation online features. Console subscription rules can change, and the old Early Access FAQ should not be treated as the current policy.
Platform-by-platform multiplayer comparison
The figures below are the player counts and features stated in the current platform listings available for this guide. “Not stated” means the listing information does not establish a value; it is not a claim that the feature is unavailable.

| Platform or edition | Local players | Online players | Cross-play | Account requirement stated in listing | Console subscription information | Edition and date |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Switch 2 | 1–4 on one system | 1–8 | Supported through the announced cross-platform feature when enabled | Not stated in the cited listing | Current requirement not established; verify Nintendo’s policy before playing online | Disney Speedstorm Nintendo Switch 2 Edition; released July 15, 2026 |
| Xbox | 2–4 | 2–8 | Cross-platform multiplayer listed | Not stated in the cited listing | Current requirement not established; verify Xbox’s policy before playing online | Current Xbox store listing; edition date not stated in the cited material |
| PlayStation | 1–4 | 8 | Gameloft announced cross-play; use the game’s enabled cross-play setting | PlayStation account required for online features | Online play is described as optional; the current subscription rule should still be checked for your console and region | Free listing; current release date not stated in the cited material |
The Nintendo listing is the only one in the supplied platform information that explicitly gives a July 15, 2026 release date. That date has passed, so the Switch 2 edition is a released product rather than an announced future version. Prices, stock, regional availability and whether a particular store page includes an edition purchase are not established by these multiplayer specifications.
Does Disney Speedstorm have cross-play?
Yes. Gameloft announced Disney Speedstorm as a cross-playable arcade racing experience. Gameloft’s FAQ further explains that friends using other platforms can play together when cross-play is enabled. Xbox’s store listing also identifies cross-platform multiplayer.
Cross-play means the platform used by one player does not automatically prevent a race with friends on another supported platform. It does not mean every platform has identical local player limits, account rules or subscription policies. Those remain platform-specific.
What “when cross-play is enabled” means
The FAQ wording makes the setting important. If two friends cannot join one another, first check that both game installations are current and that cross-play has not been disabled in either player’s settings. A menu name can vary by platform or game update, so look for a setting containing “cross-play,” “cross-platform” or a similar term in the multiplayer or account options.
- Install the same current version of Disney Speedstorm on each player’s platform.
- Sign in to the platform accounts the game requests and complete any first-run account prompts.
- Open the game’s multiplayer or social area and confirm that cross-play is enabled for each player.
- Add or select friends through the game’s available friend or invite system, rather than assuming a console-only party will be visible to every platform.
- Have the host create an online race, then send invitations to the other players.
- If an invitation fails, close and reopen the game on both sides, confirm the same regional or privacy restrictions are not blocking invitations, and try again with a smaller group.
These steps describe the practical sequence implied by the cross-play and multiplayer requirements. The exact button labels and account-linking screens can change with updates, so follow the labels shown in your installed version.
Can friends play together online?
Yes. Online multiplayer is supported, and the platform listings allow races involving up to eight online players. The minimum shown is not identical everywhere: Nintendo lists one to eight online players, while Xbox lists two to eight. PlayStation lists eight online players without stating a lower bound in the cited store text.
Choosing a host and group size
For a mixed-platform group, choose one player to create the race and invite the others after cross-play is enabled. A group of two is enough for the Xbox listing’s stated online range. Nintendo’s one-player minimum indicates that its online listing can include a solo participant, but the listing does not explain whether that means a solo online session, matchmaking or another mode. Do not infer a specific matchmaking format from the number alone.

What online multiplayer is not
The official descriptions support competitive races. They do not establish a cooperative story mode, shared construction mode or campaign in which players combine abilities against computer-controlled objectives. If your group says “co-op,” use the term in the everyday sense of playing together in the same session; expect racing competition unless the game’s current mode menu says otherwise.
Is Disney Speedstorm couch co-op?
It supports local multiplayer on one console, which is the feature most players mean by couch multiplayer. The number of people who can share a system depends on the platform:
- Nintendo Switch 2: one to four players on one system.
- Xbox: two to four local players.
- PlayStation: one to four local players.
Local multiplayer does not require the players to be on separate consoles or to use cross-play. It is the appropriate choice when everyone is in the same room. The store data does not specify the controller model, split-screen presentation or whether every local mode supports every track, so check the mode and controller prompts shown by your edition.
Why the ranges differ
The ranges are store-listing specifications, not a universal promise that every version behaves identically. Nintendo and PlayStation both list a one-player minimum for local play, whereas Xbox lists two. The listings also agree on a four-player local maximum. A platform’s minimum can reflect how that store defines a local session rather than a limitation on launching the game alone.

Do you need PlayStation Plus, Xbox Game Pass or Nintendo Switch Online?
There is no single subscription answer that applies to every platform and region. Console policies can change independently of the game, and the cited Early Access FAQ describes temporary rules that should not be reused as a current guarantee.

PlayStation
The PlayStation store listing says online play is optional and that online features require a PlayStation account. “Optional” means you can use the game without participating in online features; it does not remove the account requirement when you do go online. The listing excerpt used here does not establish a current PlayStation subscription requirement, so check the store page for your country and console generation before joining an online race.
Nintendo Switch 2
The Nintendo listing confirms local and online player counts but does not state the current Nintendo Switch Online requirement in the supplied information. Check Nintendo’s current online-service notice for your region and the account used on the console. Do not rely on an old launch or Early Access exception.
Xbox
The Xbox listing confirms local, online and cross-platform multiplayer but does not establish the current subscription requirement in the supplied information. Check the current Xbox multiplayer policy attached to your account and region. The old Early Access FAQ said Xbox players required an active Xbox Live Gold subscription during that period; that historical statement is not proof of the rule after Early Access.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why old Early Access advice can be misleading
The Early Access FAQ recorded temporary exceptions for PlayStation and Nintendo Switch players during the first six months, while Xbox required an active Xbox Live Gold subscription during Early Access. Those details describe an earlier access period. Treat them as historical context only and verify the live console policy when you plan to play.
Is Disney Speedstorm free?
The PlayStation listing describes the game as free. The supplied Nintendo and Xbox listing details establish multiplayer counts, but they do not provide enough information to label those editions free or to state a purchase price. The Nintendo Switch 2 product is identified as the Disney Speedstorm Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, released July 15, 2026; whether you obtain it through a purchase, a bundle or another regional offer depends on the store page you see.
Do not assume that “free” on one platform automatically means identical access, included content or identical account terms on another. Confirm the edition name, region, download or purchase status and any in-game access notices before paying or starting a group session.

How to set up a local race
Local play is the simplest option when everyone is together, because it avoids cross-play invitations and most online-policy issues.
- Launch Disney Speedstorm on the console you will share.
- Connect and sign in the controllers required by your platform.
- Open the game’s local or multiplayer option and select the race mode available for shared play.
- Have each participant join when the game displays the local-player prompt.
- Choose racers and a track, then start the race.
The platform listings establish the maximum local count, not a universal controller setup. If a fourth player cannot join, check the console’s controller assignment screen and the mode’s own player limit before changing account or network settings.
How to set up an online race with friends
- Confirm every participant has installed the same current game version.
- Check whether each player must sign in to a platform or game account. PlayStation explicitly requires a PlayStation account for online features.
- Review the cross-play setting and enable it for players who are on different platforms.
- Open the online multiplayer area and create a session or race lobby.
- Invite friends using the game’s displayed friend or invite controls.
- Wait until the intended players appear in the lobby, then select the race and begin.
- If someone cannot join, test one platform pair at a time, starting with the host and one guest, before inviting the full group.
The exact menu names can change. Use the labels in your installed build rather than following an outdated video that shows a different interface.

A friend on another platform is missing
- Confirm cross-play is enabled for both players.
- Check that both installations are updated to the same current version.
- Make sure invitations are being sent through the game’s cross-platform friend or invite flow, not only through a console-specific friends list.
- Restart the game after changing the cross-play setting.
The lobby will not start
- Reduce the group to one host and one guest to identify whether the issue is player-count related.
- Check the platform’s current online-service status and account restrictions.
- Verify that the host has selected an online mode rather than a local-only mode.
- Leave and recreate the lobby if a previous invitation has expired.
Local players cannot join
- Reconnect or reassign each controller at the console level.
- Confirm that the selected mode supports the number of local participants you are trying to add.
- Compare your platform’s stated range: Nintendo and PlayStation list one to four local players, while Xbox lists two to four.
Online access is blocked by a subscription prompt
Do not assume the prompt is caused by the game itself. Check the current console policy for your country, the account’s age and privacy settings, and whether the platform treats the selected mode as online multiplayer. Historical Early Access exceptions do not override a current store policy.
Which platform fits each type of player?
Everyone is in the same room
Choose the console already connected to the display and use local multiplayer. All three cited platforms list a four-player local maximum, but Xbox lists a two-player minimum while Nintendo Switch 2 and PlayStation list one.
Your group uses different platforms
Use the editions supported by the game’s cross-play system, enable cross-play and invite through the game. Gameloft’s announcement and FAQ support cross-platform sessions, while Xbox’s listing explicitly advertises cross-platform multiplayer.

You want the largest online group
Plan for a maximum of eight online players. Nintendo and Xbox specify an upper limit of eight, and PlayStation lists eight online players. The minimum and matchmaking behavior are not identical in the listings, so the host should confirm the lobby’s available capacity before promising a full group.
You want to avoid online requirements
Use local multiplayer where possible. PlayStation’s listing explicitly says online play is optional, and local sessions do not require cross-platform invitations. Subscription and account rules can still apply to platform sign-in, so check the console prompts shown on your system.
Important limits of the published specifications
Player counts are not a complete description of every mode. The listings do not establish whether ranked events, special events or every track support the same limits. They also do not specify voice-chat behavior, parental-control settings, regional matchmaking pools, cross-progression, save transfers or the exact friend-account architecture. Those details can change with updates and should be confirmed in the current game menus and platform support pages.
Recommended Free Tools
The safest way to plan a race is therefore to use the published limits as capacity guidance: four people on one system, up to eight online, and cross-platform play when enabled. Then verify the live account and subscription prompts for the platform and region each player actually uses.
Bottom line for Disney Speedstorm multiplayer
Disney Speedstorm supports couch multiplayer, online racing and cross-play. Nintendo Switch 2 allows one to four local players and one to eight online; Xbox lists two to four local and two to eight online with cross-platform multiplayer; PlayStation lists one to four local, eight online and optional online play, with a PlayStation account required for online features. Because console subscription rules and game menus can change, check the current platform policy and the cross-play setting immediately before your group starts.
