For a genuinely full load, a modern ENERGY STAR certified dishwasher usually uses less water than hand-washing, particularly if hand-washing means leaving the faucet running. Consumer Reports testing found current dishwashers using about 3–6 gallons per cycle, while running-faucet hand-washing can use about 22 gallons.
Grease is more conditional. A correctly loaded dishwasher on the right cycle removes ordinary greasy residue well in many cases, but a careful two-basin hand-washing method cleaned slightly better in a 2020 University of Michigan study and used less energy than machine washing. The practical choice is an ENERGY STAR dishwasher for full loads, a two-basin setup when you must wash by hand, and never continuous faucet running.

Water use: dishwasher versus the two hand-washing methods
Water savings depend more on how the hand-washing is done and whether the dishwasher is full than on the mere presence of a machine. The comparison below uses the measurements and qualifications reported by Consumer Reports, ENERGY STAR and the University of Michigan study.

| Method | Water evidence | Grease and baked-on residue | Energy evidence | Labor and full-load requirement |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ENERGY STAR dishwasher | Consumer Reports testing found current machines at about 3–6 gallons per cycle. Dishwashers sold since 2013 may use no more than 5 gallons in the standardized test; actual use varies by model and cycle. | Many efficient models remove ordinary grease without prerinsing. Targeted spray jets and heavy or turbo cycles improve baked-on food removal in testing, but results vary. | ENERGY STAR says a new certified dishwasher uses less than half as much energy as hand-washing and can save 8,400 gallons of water per year; savings depend on model and use. | Loading and unloading take work, but the machine can wash a full load unattended. Running small loads erodes the advantage. |
| Two-basin hand-washing | No single gallon figure was established in the cited study. It uses a basin of soapy water and a separate rinse basin rather than a continuously running tap. | The 2020 University of Michigan study found this method cleaned slightly better than a machine. That result does not apply to every hand-washing setup. | The University of Michigan study, as summarized by Consumer Reports, identified two-basin washing as the most energy-efficient hand method. | Requires sorting, washing, rinsing and drying each item. It works for any load size, including a few pieces. |
| Hand-washing with the faucet running | Consumer Reports reports about 22 gallons in this scenario and calls it the worst way to wash dishes environmentally. | Can provide close visual control, but the environmental cost is high. Cleaning quality depends on the person, water temperature and tools. | No specific energy figure was reported for this method; heating a large, continuously replaced volume of water increases energy demand. | Immediate control but constant attention. It is the least efficient choice for a full load. |
The figures are not interchangeable laboratory readings: a dishwasher cycle, a two-basin setup and an open faucet measure different behaviors. Treat 3–6 gallons, 22 gallons and the annual 8,400-gallon estimate as usage- and model-dependent benchmarks, not guarantees for every household.

Why a full dishwasher load usually wins on water
A dishwasher concentrates a measured amount of water, recirculates it through spray arms and filters it during the cycle. Hand-washing with an open tap continually replaces water, so the total rises with every minute the faucet runs. That is why a machine can use less water even though it appears to fill and spray repeatedly.
ENERGY STAR’s current guidance states that a new certified dishwasher uses less than half as much energy as washing dishes by hand and can save 8,400 gallons of water each year. The annual figure assumes a particular usage pattern and certified model; it is not a fixed saving for every household. Older or noncertified machines, partial loads and unusually intensive cycles can produce different results.
Consumer Reports’ 2023 testing found current dishwashers using about 3–6 gallons per cycle. Its testing guidance also notes that dishwashers sold since 2013 can use no more than 5 gallons in the standardized test. The apparent difference between the 3–6-gallon range and the 5-gallon standard reflects different models, cycles and measurement conditions, so check the specification for the exact machine rather than assuming one number applies universally.

When the dishwasher advantage disappears
- Small loads: Starting a cycle for a handful of items spends a cycle’s water and energy without filling the available capacity.
- Prerinsing: Rinsing every plate under the tap adds water before the machine starts. EPA WaterSense and ENERGY STAR recommend scraping solids instead.
- Overly intensive cycles: Heavy or turbo programs can be useful for baked-on residue, but they may use more resources than a normal cycle. Select the least intensive program that matches the soil.
- Using a machine that cannot be loaded correctly: Blocked spray paths or nested dishes can leave grease behind, prompting a second wash and doubling resource use.
Which method cleans greasy cookware better?
There is no universal winner for every greasy pan. Consumer Reports says its extensive lab testing found no clear relationship between a dishwasher’s water use and its cleaning performance. A low-water machine is not automatically weak, and a high-water machine is not automatically better.
Ordinary grease
Many efficient dishwashers remove ordinary grease without prerinsing when dishes are loaded so spray can reach the soiled surfaces and the selected cycle matches the residue. Scrape large food particles into the waste or compost first; do not rinse the entire item under running water. Consumer Reports testing has found that targeted spray jets can help direct cleaning action at difficult areas.
Grease performance still varies by model, load arrangement and cookware material. A result that is clean on one machine may require a different rack position or cycle on another. Treat “cleans grease” as a likely outcome for a suitable full load, not a promise that every greasy item will emerge spotless.

Baked-on grease and carbonized residue
Baked-on material is more demanding than a thin film of cooking oil. Consumer Reports reports better removal in testing when machines use targeted spray jets and heavy or turbo cycles. Those programs are tools for difficult loads, not proof that every baked-on pan is dishwasher-safe or will be cleaned in one pass.
Recommended Free Tools
For a pan with residue that has hardened around corners or rivets, first follow the cookware maker’s care instructions. If the item is dishwasher-safe, position the dirty surface toward the strongest spray path without blocking other items and choose the appropriate heavy program. If the result is still dirty, hand-clean the remaining area rather than repeatedly running full cycles.
Why two-basin washing can edge out a machine on cleaning
In the 2020 University of Michigan study summarized by Consumer Reports, a two-basin method cleaned slightly better than a machine and was the most energy-efficient hand-washing approach. The method gives the washer direct control over pressure, contact time and the tool used on each surface.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
That finding should not be generalized to all hand-washing. The same comparison distinguishes controlled basin washing from leaving the faucet running, which performed worst environmentally. Better cleaning control does not justify wasting water through a continuously open tap.
How to run a dishwasher for greasy cookware
- Check the cookware label. Follow the manufacturer’s dishwasher-safety instructions, especially for nonstick finishes, wood, bonded handles and other materials that may not tolerate a machine cycle.
- Scrape, do not fully prerinse. Remove bones, seeds and large solids. A thin smear of grease can remain for the detergent and spray system to remove.
- Load with spray access. Face greasy surfaces toward the interior spray path. Keep items from nesting and avoid placing a pan where it blocks water from reaching the rack below.
- Separate delicate pieces. Put items that require hand care aside rather than exposing them to a cycle they are not designed to withstand.
- Choose the cycle by soil. Use a normal program for routine grease. Select a heavy or turbo cycle when baked-on residue warrants the extra cleaning action, recognizing that resource use may be higher.
- Run a genuinely full load. Combine compatible dishes until the racks are full enough to use the cycle efficiently, but do not pack them so tightly that spray cannot reach surfaces.
- Inspect before repeating. If a pan is still greasy, identify the missed surface, improve its orientation or switch to the suitable cycle. Do not assume that a second identical run will fix a blocked spray path.
How to use the two-basin method efficiently
The two-basin approach is the strongest hand-washing alternative in the cited evidence. It separates washing from rinsing so the rinse water is not continuously replaced by an open faucet.

- Prepare two basins. Fill one with soapy wash water and the other with clean rinse water. The study does not establish one universal basin volume, temperature or detergent amount, so use enough water to keep the items submerged and workable without overflowing.
- Scrape solids first. Remove food scraps before placing cookware in the wash basin. This reduces contamination of the wash water and avoids using running water to perform a job a scraper can do.
- Wash from least greasy to most greasy. Start with glasses and lightly soiled dishes, then move to plates and greasy cookware. This keeps the wash solution usable longer.
- Match the tool to the finish. Use a nonabrasive sponge on delicate or nonstick cookware. Use a scouring pad or brush only on surfaces whose manufacturer permits it and that can tolerate the abrasion.
- Rinse in the second basin. Fully remove soap with the stored rinse water rather than holding each item under a running tap.
- Drain and dry safely. Place clean items on a rack or towel where they can air-dry without contacting the dirty work area.
- Refresh water when necessary. If the wash basin becomes visibly greasy or the rinse basin is no longer clean enough to remove soap, replace the water. The goal is controlled water use, not reusing dirty water indefinitely.
Cookware compatibility and damage risks
Cleaning performance is only one part of the decision. A dishwasher can remove grease from a pan while still being the wrong treatment for that pan’s finish. Follow the cookware manufacturer’s dishwasher-safety instructions for every item.

- Nonstick and delicate surfaces: Consumer Reports recommends a nonabrasive sponge when hand-washing delicate or nonstick cookware. Avoid a scouring pad or brush unless the maker specifically allows it.
- Tough, compatible surfaces: A scouring pad or brush can address stubborn residue during hand-washing when the material is designed to tolerate it.
- Mixed loads: If one pan requires gentle hand care, remove it and wash it separately rather than compromising the care requirements of the entire load.
- Unknown materials: When the label is missing or unclear, do not infer dishwasher safety from the fact that a similar-looking pan survived a cycle. The manufacturer’s instructions control.
Energy, time and effort: the trade-offs beyond gallons
Water is the clearest measurable difference, but the methods also shift energy and labor. ENERGY STAR says a new certified dishwasher uses less than half as much energy as hand-washing. The University of Michigan study identified two-basin washing as the most energy-efficient hand method, so the two statements can both be true: a certified machine can beat hand-washing overall, while a carefully controlled basin method can beat other hand methods and slightly outperform a machine on cleaning in that study.
Hand-washing gives immediate feedback and lets you spend extra effort on one pan instead of running a full cycle. That can make sense for a few items or cookware that cannot go in the dishwasher. The trade-off is repeated handling, water preparation and rinsing. A dishwasher requires loading and unloading, but the washing stage can proceed without continuous attention once the cycle starts.
Neither method has one fixed time or energy cost for every household. Water-heating efficiency, cycle selection, load size and how often the machine is run all change the result. Use the cited annual ENERGY STAR saving as a model- and usage-dependent estimate, not as a promise for a particular kitchen.
A practical decision rule
Choose the dishwasher when
- You can wait until the racks hold a genuinely full load.
- The dishes and cookware are labeled dishwasher-safe.
- You can scrape solids, load for spray access and select a cycle suited to the grease.
- Your alternative would be washing the same load under a continuously running faucet.
Choose two-basin hand-washing when
- You have only a few items and running a full machine would be wasteful.
- The cookware’s care instructions require hand-washing.
- You need close control over pressure and tools for a delicate or unusually shaped pan.
- You can use a wash basin and a separate rinse basin instead of leaving the tap open.
Avoid faucet-running hand-washing for a full load
Consumer Reports estimates about 22 gallons for this practice and calls it the worst environmental option among the compared approaches. If you must use the sink, close the drain, fill basins and turn the tap on only for brief preparation or cleanup.
Troubleshooting greasy results
The machine leaves a thin greasy film
- Confirm that large solids were scraped but the items were not heavily prerinsed.
- Rearrange the load so greasy surfaces face the spray and dishes are not nested.
- Use the cycle intended for the soil level rather than repeating a normal cycle automatically.
- Check whether a delicate pan should have been hand-washed according to its care instructions.
Baked-on spots remain after a heavy cycle
- Identify whether the residue is on a dishwasher-safe surface.
- Reposition the pan so the affected area has a clear spray path.
- If the machine’s appropriate heavy or turbo cycle still leaves residue, hand-clean that area with a compatible sponge, pad or brush.
- Do not keep escalating cycles for cookware the manufacturer says to wash by hand.
Hand-washed cookware still feels greasy
- Move the item later in the wash sequence, after less-soiled dishes.
- Use a fresh wash solution if the basin has become greasy.
- Scrub with a tool appropriate for the finish; use a nonabrasive sponge on nonstick or delicate surfaces.
- Rinse in the second basin and inspect the surface before drying.
Bottom line for a typical household
For a full load, use a modern ENERGY STAR dishwasher when the cookware is compatible and the racks can be loaded for unobstructed spray. It generally uses less water than hand-washing, and ENERGY STAR says it uses less than half the energy of hand-washing under its guidance assumptions. For hand-washing, use two basins: the 2020 University of Michigan study found that method slightly cleaner than a machine and the most energy-efficient hand technique. Continuous faucet running is the outlier to avoid, at about 22 gallons for the compared washing task.
