Hand-wash a kadhai if its material or care instructions exclude dishwashers, and scrub burnt or sticky residue before loading when the appliance manual calls for it. The word “kadhai” describes a shape, not a material: cleaning performance and cookware safety are separate questions.
Can a dishwasher clean greasy kadhais?
Some dishwashers sold in India have cycles intended for oily masala residue and heavily soiled cookware. Bosch describes an “Intensive Kadhai” programme, while Samsung’s 2021 India announcement describes “IntensiveWash” for heavily soiled kadhais, pots, pans, and cookers. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent proof that every model removes every kind of grease equally well.
Check the exact model’s manual for the right cycle and loading instructions. Bosch’s India product information also describes a 70°C wash; that temperature and the company’s hygiene claims should not be taken as proof of a medical outcome. Material and the individual utensil’s care instructions matter more than its shape. Bosch lists stainless-steel kadhais, pressure cookers, pots, and pans as suitable for its dishwasher guidance, but warns that aluminum, brass, copper, bronze, silver, gold, and acrylic may discolor or be damaged. That is not a universal ruling for every brand, finish, coating, or construction: check both the cookware and dishwasher manuals before loading.
Cleaning ability does not establish material compatibility. A heavy-soil cycle may be designed for grease, but it cannot make a dishwasher-excluded vessel safe to wash in the machine. Bosch India dishwasher and utensil guidance.

What to do with burnt, sticky, or stubborn residue
Bosch advises scrubbing burnt or sticky residue manually before loading for best results. Follow the instructions for your own appliance and cookware: scrape or treat residue as directed rather than assuming every load can go straight into the machine. If a kadhai needs soaking or targeted scrubbing, hand-washing may be the more direct choice for that item.
Water and energy: what the comparisons can—and cannot—tell you
Studies reviewed by the U.S. Department of Energy often find that machine washing uses less water than hand-washing, particularly when hand-washing involves a running tap or substantial rinse water. But there is no single saving that applies to every household. Results depend on the dishwasher, cycle, load, how the machine heats water, and the person’s hand-washing method.

These figures come from different studies, methods, places, and washing behaviors; they are not interchangeable or additive. DOE’s 2024 analysis discusses limitations and notes that practices such as re-rinsing, running repeat cycles, or returning to hand-washing can affect projected savings. Neither the studies nor the modeled estimate establishes a particular Indian household’s water, energy, or bill savings. A careful basin wash can also differ substantially from washing under a running tap.

How to choose the better method for your kadhai

Using a dishwasher for Indian cooking
- Identify the kadhai material and care instructions. Check the utensil’s label or maker guidance, then check the dishwasher manual. Do not infer compatibility from the word “kadhai.”
- Check rack fit and load securely. Make sure the cookware fits without blocking spray arms or preventing other items from being cleaned, following the appliance’s loading diagram.
- Remove food and treat stubborn residue. Scrape or scrub burnt and sticky patches as the manual directs. Bosch says its dishwasher does not require pre-rinsing on its product page, but its utensil guidance separately advises scrubbing burnt or sticky residue.
- Select the appropriate cycle. Use the model’s intensive, heavy-soil, or kadhai cycle if the manual recommends it for the load; cycle names and capabilities vary by model.
- Use only the detergent and additives specified for the machine. Bosch describes tablets that combine detergent, salt, and rinse aid, and cautions against table salt or local rock salt in its system. Check your own manual before adding detergent, dishwasher salt, or rinse aid.
Bottom line: choose by material, residue, and washing routine
A compatible stainless-steel kadhai with ordinary heavy grease is a reasonable candidate for an intensive dishwasher cycle. Hand-wash cookware whose instructions rule out the machine, and give burnt or sticky patches the manual attention the appliance guidance requires. Dishwashers often compare favorably on water use, but the actual difference depends on the machine, load, cycle, and how you wash by hand.
