Discord Says 70,000 ID Photos May Be Exposed After Third-Party Breach; Hackers Claim Millions More

Short answer: Discord has not confirmed that 2.1 million age-verification photos were exposed. In disclosures dated October 3 and October 9, 2025, Discord said a breach at third-party customer-service provider 5CA may have exposed government-ID images belonging to approximately 70,000 users. Threat actors claimed access to more than 2.1 million images and 1.5 TB of data, but those figures remain unverified.

What Discord actually disclosed

Discord said an unauthorized party compromised 5CA, a provider used for customer-support operations. The company said its own core systems were not breached and that the incident involved information available to customer-support and Trust & Safety agents. Discord’s disclosure and update are dated October 3 and October 9, 2025: Discord’s incident update.

According to Discord, approximately 70,000 users may have had government-ID photos exposed. The images were associated with age-related appeals handled through support, rather than necessarily with every person who later completed Discord’s in-product age-assurance process.

Discord said passwords, authentication data, full payment-card numbers and CVV codes were not involved. That is Discord’s statement about the incident, not an independently established guarantee.

Messages with support agents Scams tailored to personal context
Last four card digits, payment type and purchase history More convincing payment-related fraud attempts

Where the 2.1-million figure came from

The larger number originated in claims attributed to the attackers or people relaying those claims. Reports described approximately 2,185,151 photos, about 1.5 TB of data, and other much larger totals for tickets and users. SecurityWeek reported the attackers’ claims and 5CA’s response at SecurityWeek; Tom’s Hardware reported Discord’s rejection of the 2.1-million figure and the extortion dispute at Tom’s Hardware.

There is no established evidence in the available record that the claimed count represents unique, authentic government IDs that were successfully copied and accessed. One user can have multiple tickets or images, and a dataset can contain duplicates, thumbnails, abandoned uploads or unrelated files. “2.1 million photos,” “5.5 million users,” ticket counts and data volume are different measurements, not competing estimates of one confirmed victim count.

The available reporting establishes allegations of theft and extortion, not a verified public dump of 2.1 million identity documents. Do not search for or share alleged stolen files; doing so can expose victims to further harm and help distribute criminal material.

Does this affect everyone who used Discord age verification?

No. Discord described the potentially exposed images as documents submitted during age-related appeals through customer support. Submitting an ID to Discord does not, by itself, prove that the image was in the affected support workflow.

Discord’s current age-assurance documentation describes separate vendors and a different process. Its Age Assurance FAQ says the vendors used for the current system were not the provider involved in the 2025 incident, and that Discord receives an age result rather than the identity document. Its current instructions, which describe k-ID and testing with Incode, Google Wallet and credit-card verification where available, are at Discord’s age-assurance guide. Availability varies by user and region.

These are current product and policy claims, not proof that every historical workflow operated identically. Discord said on February 24, 2026, that broader global age-assurance expansion was delayed until the second half of 2026: its rollout update.

How to tell whether Discord notified you

  1. Check the email address attached to your Discord account, including spam, junk and filtered folders.
  2. Look for an individualized notice from [email protected]. Discord said it would not call users by phone about this incident.
  3. Do not use links in a suspicious message. Open the official Discord app or type the official site address manually.
  4. If the message is unclear, contact Discord through its official support channels and do not upload another identity document merely to “verify” the notification.

A notice may concern support information even if no ID image was exposed. Conversely, a public news report cannot establish that a particular user was included; Discord has not published a complete public victim list.

What to do if you may be affected

Secure accounts

  • Save the notification, its date, description of affected data and any incident reference number.
  • Change your Discord password if you reused it elsewhere. Discord said passwords were not exposed, but reuse creates a separate risk.
  • Enable or review multifactor authentication, preferably with an authenticator app or security key.
  • Watch for password-reset messages, unfamiliar logins, impersonation and fake Discord support.

Protect identity information

  • If Discord confirms that an ID image was exposed, consider a free credit freeze with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. A freeze helps prevent many new-credit accounts but does not stop every form of identity misuse.
  • Review reports through AnnualCreditReport.com and monitor bank and card statements.
  • Use the FTC’s free recovery service at IdentityTheft.gov if you see fraud or identity theft.
  • Ask the authority that issued your passport, driver’s licence or national ID whether replacement or a document number change is appropriate. Procedures vary by country, state and document type.

Paid identity monitoring is optional. It can provide alerts and restoration assistance, but it cannot prevent all misuse and may not detect stalking, impersonation or use of an ID outside credit systems.

What remains unknown

  • Whether attackers actually exfiltrated 2.1 million images.
  • Whether the claimed files were unique, authentic and accessible to the attackers.
  • Whether any large-scale public release occurred.
  • The precise technical entry point and final number of affected users.
  • Whether every item attributed to the attackers came from Discord-related systems.

The bottom line

The confirmed account is a third-party customer-support incident involving 5CA, with Discord identifying approximately 70,000 users who may have had government-ID photos exposed. The 2.1-million figure is a serious attacker allegation, not a verified final count. Treat an individualized Discord notice as the key signal, secure reused credentials and multifactor authentication, and prioritize credit freezes and official identity-theft resources if exposure is confirmed.
