Discord’s “Game Mode” is officially called Game Overlay. It puts selected Discord features—such as text notifications, voice controls and call controls—over a running game so you can use them without switching windows. Discord’s current guide supports the overlay on Windows 10 and 11 only; it says the feature does not function on macOS or Linux.
What Discord Game Overlay does—and what it doesn’t
Game Overlay is a built-in interface for using selected Discord functions during gameplay. Depending on your settings, you can see text notifications, participate in voice, view who is speaking, manage calls, and show or hide overlay windows. Discord also lets you adjust the overlay’s presentation and keyboard shortcuts. See Discord’s Game Overlay 101 guide for its current controls.

It is not the same as Windows Game Mode, Discord activity status, or Go Live and screen sharing. Those features have separate settings and purposes.
How to enable and open the overlay
- In the Discord desktop app, open User Settings > Overlay. Discord may revise settings labels, so the wording in your client can differ from the guide.
- Enable the overlay and adjust its display options or keybinds to suit you.
- Launch a game on a supported Windows system. While the game is running, press Shift+` to open the overlay. This is the default shortcut in Discord’s guide; use your configured shortcut if you changed it.
- Use the overlay to view notifications or manage the voice and call controls you need, then show or hide its windows as desired.
There are some messaging limits: notifications may not appear for a muted server, DM or group, or while Streamer Mode is enabled. Slash commands, stickers and GIFs can arrive as messages, but Discord says they cannot be sent through the overlay.

Which operating systems are compatible with the overlay?
Discord’s current compatibility guidance names Windows 10 and Windows 11. It says the overlay does not function on macOS or Linux. This is separate from streaming support: Discord documents audio capture for Go Live and screen sharing on Windows desktop, macOS desktop, Chrome browser and mobile clients, but those streaming options do not make Game Overlay available on those platforms.
Which display mode should you use?
If the overlay does not appear, Discord recommends trying windowed or borderless windowed mode. Its separate known-issue article about a revamped overlay says that implementation works in windowed fullscreen and windowed borderless fullscreen, but not true fullscreen, and recommends borderless fullscreen as a workaround.

That known-issue article was updated July 30, 2024, and described a rollout that began April 15, 2024, with coverage in Canary and PTB and no Stable rollout estimate at the time. Those rollout details may have changed. Check the current support article and the options in your Discord client rather than assuming every client has the same overlay version or display-mode behavior.
Why is Discord overlay not working in my game?
Try the relevant step for the symptom. Discord presents these as troubleshooting suggestions, not guaranteed fixes.

The overlay does not appear
- Confirm that you are using Windows 10 or 11 and have enabled the overlay in Discord settings.
- Try the default Shift+` shortcut, or check the keybind you assigned.
- Switch the game to windowed or borderless windowed mode and try again.
The game lags, crashes, or has other problems
Discord recommends turning off the overlay for the affected game if it causes lag, a crash or another issue. Its support guide explains how to disable the feature for an individual game; you do not have to treat an overlay problem in one game as a reason to disable it everywhere.
The game crashes while using the overlay
If the crash continues, Discord asks users to collect the hook log from the path shown in its Game Overlay 101 support article and submit a ticket with the game name and details of the issue. Follow the article’s current instructions for locating the log rather than relying on a remembered path.

Hotkeys fail in a game running with elevated permissions
Discord’s experimental System Helper may allow Discord hotkeys to register when an elevated-permission game blocks them. It is available only to certain Windows desktop users; Discord says it is not supported or necessary on mobile or web. Treat it as a limited troubleshooting option, not a requirement for the overlay.

Turning the overlay on or off does not determine what friends can see about your activity. Manage activity visibility separately in Discord’s activity-sharing settings. Likewise, use Go Live or screen sharing when your goal is to broadcast gameplay, not to display Discord controls over your own game.
