Use Discord AutoMod alone when its built-in keyword, spam, and mention controls cover the problems your server actually has. Add a moderation bot when moderators need richer logs, warnings, configurable workflows, or commands that AutoMod does not provide. A hybrid setup is often the most practical: let AutoMod stop routine violations, while a carefully permissioned bot handles the specific workflow your team is missing.
Neither option replaces clear rules, human judgment, or a response plan for raids and appeals. The right choice depends on coverage, moderator workflow, false-positive control, permissions, privacy, and what happens if an external bot is unavailable.

What Discord AutoMod does
AutoMod is Discord’s built-in content-filtering system. It can detect and block unwanted messages before they are posted, then notify moderators in a private channel. Discord says AutoMod is currently available for all servers; its FAQ was updated June 15, 2026. See the AutoMod FAQ for the current availability and controls.
Native filters and actions
- Commonly flagged words: ready-made word lists for frequently reported content.
- Custom keywords: your own words and phrases, including terms in member usernames and server nicknames.
- Spam-content filtering: a built-in detector for many forms of unwanted spam.
- Mention-spam limits: controls for excessive notifications caused by mass mentions.
- Moderator alerts: send a rule-trigger notification to a private moderator channel.
- Message blocking: stop a flagged message before other members see it.
- Timeouts: some rules can automatically timeout the user when that action is available for the rule.
Custom keyword rules can match words and phrases in any language, links, emoji, punctuation, and symbols. A multiword term must match the exact phrase. Discord’s FAQ documents wildcard options for prefix, suffix, or anywhere matching. A custom rule can contain up to 1,000 terms, with each term limited to 60 characters. Filter behavior and limits can change, so verify the controls in your server before building a large rule set.

Where AutoMod is strongest
AutoMod is well suited to recurring, easy-to-describe violations: banned slurs or phrases, invitation and advertising spam, repeated mention abuse, and other patterns that can be expressed as a filter. Because it is native, there is no separate service to authorize, maintain, or keep online. Moderators can receive alerts without giving an outside application access to the server.
AutoMod’s limitations
AutoMod is a filter layer, not a complete moderation department. Discord explicitly warns that its spam-content filter is imperfect. It may miss nonsense repeated across several messages or channels and some “copy/pasta” patterns that moderators would still consider spam. A message that passes the detector is not necessarily acceptable under your rules.
Language and configuration limits
- Discord says its commonly flagged word lists are currently English-only.
- The spam-content filter is also currently English-only.
- Custom keyword rules can be written for any language, but staff must supply and maintain the terms themselves.
- Administrators must configure AutoMod rules on desktop, according to Discord’s FAQ.
- Editing rules requires the Manage Server permission or Administrator.
These limits matter for multilingual communities. You may need separate custom terms for each language, and you should expect to tune them as members use slang, deliberate misspellings, or coded phrases.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFalse positives and exceptions
A broad keyword can block an innocent conversation, a quoted rule, or a legitimate username. Before enabling an aggressive rule, decide which roles or channels should be exempt and whether alerts should go to moderators instead of immediately blocking messages. Keep a record of why an exception exists so a later staff member does not remove it accidentally.
What a moderation bot can add
A third-party bot can provide a broader, end-to-end workflow around AutoMod’s filters. Discord’s safety guidance describes bot use cases such as anti-spam, text filters, anti-raid features, user filters, and manual moderation systems. The exact capabilities, permissions, data access, and plan restrictions differ by application; do not assume that one bot behaves like another.

Example: a documented bot workflow
Dyno’s documentation describes an Automod module for banned words, spam, spoilers, and other configured conditions. Its logs documentation lists moderation-action logs, AutoMod trigger logs, command logs, and warning logs. Those records can give a volunteer team a shared case history instead of forcing moderators to reconstruct events from chat. The vendor’s feature descriptions are available in its Automod documentation and logs documentation.
This is an example of the category, not a universal recommendation. Another bot may offer different commands, storage, dashboards, retention, or pricing. Evaluate the specific application you plan to authorize.
Workflows bots commonly cover
- Warnings and escalating punishments that follow your staff policy.
- Manual commands for deleting messages, timing out members, kicking, or banning them.
- Searchable moderation and warning history for repeat offenders.
- Configurable logs for actions, command use, and automated triggers.
- Specialized detectors or anti-raid controls not present in your native rules.
- Staff-facing commands that standardize how several moderators handle the same incident.
The trade-off is operational overhead. A bot introduces another dashboard, another permission set, another privacy policy, and a dependency on an external service. If it is offline or misconfigured, its protections may disappear while Discord’s native controls remain available.
AutoMod versus a bot at a glance
| Decision factor | Discord AutoMod | Moderation bot |
|---|---|---|
| Core coverage | Built-in keyword, spam-content, and mention-spam filters with alerts, blocking, and some timeout actions. | Depends on the application; may add automod conditions, manual commands, warnings, logs, and specialized filters. |
| Installation | Enabled in the server’s Discord settings. | Requires authorization, role placement, channel permissions, and ongoing configuration. |
| Rule editing | Manage Server or Administrator permission; Discord says configuration is done on desktop. | Usually managed through the bot’s dashboard or commands, with requirements set by the developer. |
| Logs and case history | Moderator alerts for triggered rules. | Some bots provide action, trigger, command, and warning logs; availability varies by bot. |
| Language support | Custom keywords can cover any language; Discord’s common-word lists and spam-content filter are English-only. | Language coverage depends on the bot’s detectors and configuration. |
| External dependency | No separate service authorization is required. | Yes; an outage, revoked authorization, or vendor change can affect features. |
| Privacy review | Handled within Discord’s own server controls. | Review the developer’s terms, privacy policy, requested permissions, and data access before authorization. |
Choose AutoMod alone when it covers the job
AutoMod alone is the sensible default for a small or medium server whose main problems are predictable words, links, advertising, mention abuse, and ordinary spam. It keeps the configuration surface small and avoids granting an outside application access to channels or moderation actions.
- Your rules can be expressed as keyword, spam, or mention conditions.
- Moderators only need alerts and straightforward blocking or timeout actions.
- You do not need a searchable warning history or a shared command system.
- Your staff can review and maintain rules from a desktop.
- You want protections that do not depend on a bot provider’s uptime or plan.
Do not add a bot merely because other servers use one. Every additional app creates another role, permission grant, privacy decision, and maintenance task.

Add a bot when you can name the missing workflow
A bot earns its place when it solves a specific problem that native controls do not. “We need better moderation” is too vague; “we need a warning history moderators can search” or “we need a consistent escalation command” is a testable requirement.
Good reasons to add one
- Moderators need warnings and infraction history across incidents.
- You need detailed logs of moderation actions, commands, and automated triggers.
- Your team relies on manual commands that should behave consistently for every moderator.
- A specialized detector or anti-raid workflow addresses a pattern AutoMod misses.
- You need configurable exceptions, escalation rules, or staff dashboards beyond Discord’s native settings.
Reasons to delay or avoid one
- You cannot explain why the requested permissions are necessary.
- No one is responsible for maintaining the bot’s rules and role hierarchy.
- The bot duplicates AutoMod without adding a measurable workflow improvement.
- Your team has not reviewed the developer’s privacy terms and data practices.
- You would rely on the bot as the only defense during a live raid.
Configure AutoMod safely: a practical sequence
- Write the rule before opening settings. List the actual violations you need to catch: terms, links, repeated mentions, advertising, or another concrete pattern. Avoid starting with a giant word list.
- Use a desktop client. Discord’s FAQ says AutoMod rule configuration is performed on desktop. Open your server settings and select the AutoMod controls.
- Enable only relevant built-in filters. Turn on commonly flagged words, spam-content filtering, and mention-spam limits where they match your community’s problems.
- Create custom keyword rules for local needs. Add exact phrases, common misspellings, links, symbols, or non-English terms that your moderators actually see. Keep each term within Discord’s 60-character limit and each rule within the 1,000-term limit.
- Choose the least disruptive first action. Send alerts to a private moderator channel while you evaluate a new rule. Use message blocking or timeout actions when the rule is reliable enough for automatic enforcement.
- Set sensible exemptions. Exempt trusted roles or channels only where staff have a reason to do so. Check that an exemption does not create an obvious route around the rule.
- Review triggers after launch. Look at alerts for false positives, missed variants, and repeated offenders. Tighten, split, or remove rules instead of continually adding exceptions.
AutoMod’s wildcard behavior and matching rules are documented in the official FAQ. Recheck that page when Discord changes the interface or filter mechanics.
Authorize a moderation bot with least privilege
- Define the bot’s exact job. Decide whether you need logs, warnings, manual commands, a detector, or an anti-raid workflow. Remove features that do not support that job.
- Inspect the authorization screen. Discord apps can request abilities such as creating or editing channels, sending messages, connecting to voice, or viewing the audit log. Approve only what the documented workflow requires.
- Review and edit the app role. Discord says administrators can inspect and change an app’s permissions from Server Settings. Its Moderating Apps on Discord guidance explains the review process.
- Place the role correctly. A bot cannot moderate members whose roles are above the bot’s highest role. Dyno’s documentation, for example, requires its role to sit above members it must moderate and lists permissions such as Manage Roles, Ban Members, and Timeout Members for relevant actions.
- Limit channel access. Give the bot access to the channels where it must read or post logs. Do not grant broad visibility simply because the authorization screen offers it.
- Read the developer’s terms and privacy policy. Discord advises checking how an app uses data available to it. Treat retention, message access, logging, and third-party processing as part of the security decision.
- Test with a staff-only case. Confirm that the bot can perform the intended action, records it where expected, and cannot affect roles or channels outside its assignment.
Permission names and requirements vary. Dyno’s listed requirements are evidence about Dyno, not a template for every bot.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a hybrid setup without creating conflicting rules
In a hybrid design, give each layer a defined responsibility. AutoMod can handle common words, spam-content detection, and mention limits. A bot can provide warning history, detailed logs, or a manual escalation command. Avoid configuring both systems to punish the same event in different ways unless staff understand which action happens first.
A workable division of labor
- AutoMod: block obvious banned terms, alert on suspected spam, and limit mass mentions.
- Bot: record warnings, expose case history, and provide consistent manual commands.
- Human moderators: review ambiguous alerts, handle appeals, and decide responses to context-dependent behavior.
Document the owner for each rule, the destination for alerts, the appeal path, and the fallback action if the bot is unavailable. Review duplicate alerts monthly so staff are not processing the same incident twice.

Raid response: filters are only one layer
During a raid, speed and visibility matter more than adding a new application mid-incident. Use AutoMod alerts and mention-spam controls, adjust rules when the pattern becomes clear, enable slowmode when message volume is overwhelming, and identify and remove bad actors. Discord’s guidance also describes an alert-only configuration as a way for moderators to assess suspected raiders before blocking every message automatically.
Do not rely on a bot as the sole defense against a live raid. Keep enough native protection enabled to remain useful if the external service fails, and ensure more than one trusted administrator can change settings.
Rules Screening is separate from moderation
Rules Screening addresses onboarding, not general message filtering. Discord says its native feature can require new members to agree to server rules before they can talk or send direct messages to members. Discord recommends using Rules Screening instead of third-party role gates for that purpose because role gates do not protect against direct messages and can confuse new members. The feature adds a joining step, which Discord notes can reduce the number of people who complete entry.
Configure Rules Screening when the immediate goal is explicit rule acceptance. Configure AutoMod when the goal is detecting and handling messages. Add a bot only when you need a separate moderation workflow.

Small community with predictable spam
Start with AutoMod’s keyword, spam-content, and mention-spam controls. Send alerts to a private channel and review false positives before enabling aggressive automatic actions. A bot is unnecessary if moderators do not need case history or additional commands.
Best Value
Growing server with several volunteer moderators
Keep AutoMod for routine filtering and add a bot only if the team needs shared warnings, searchable logs, or standardized manual actions. Limit the bot’s role and channel access, then write a short staff procedure explaining which system handles each incident.
Multilingual server
Do not assume the built-in common-word lists or spam detector cover every language; Discord identifies both as English-only. Build custom keyword rules for the languages and slang you moderate, and use human review for context-heavy cases. A bot may help if it documents broader language support, but verify that claim with its current documentation.
Server preparing for a surge or raid risk
Use native mention and spam controls, prepare slowmode and staff roles in advance, and decide who can change settings. A bot can add specialized tools or logs, but it should complement—not replace—native controls and an incident plan.
Maintenance checklist
- Review AutoMod alerts for false positives and missed variants.
- Remove obsolete keywords and document sensitive exceptions.
- Check that moderator and bot roles still have the intended hierarchy.
- Audit app permissions after every feature change.
- Confirm that log channels are private to the staff who need them.
- Re-read the bot developer’s terms and privacy policy when the service changes.
- Test a warning, timeout, and log entry with a staff-only account after major configuration edits.
- Keep a fallback procedure for periods when the external bot is unavailable.
Bottom line: pick the smallest system that covers your real needs
AutoMod is the right answer when native filters and alerts solve your recurring problems. Add a moderation bot when you can identify a missing workflow—such as warnings, case history, detailed logs, or a specialized detector—and when the bot’s permissions and privacy terms are acceptable. For many servers, the strongest design is a restrained hybrid: native filters for routine protection, a narrowly permissioned bot for documented gaps, and moderators responsible for context, appeals, and incident response.
