In Disco Elysium, the choices that truly last are the ones that set persistent story flags, close checks or tasks, change a partner’s availability, spend health or morale, or determine which later conversations and outcomes can occur. Most ordinary dialogue replies and many failed checks are local: they alter a scene, reveal different information, or send the investigation down another route without changing the broad ending structure. Treat red checks and the Mercenary Tribunal as danger points, use white checks as opportunities you can usually prepare for, and save before the Tribunal if you want a reliable way to protect Kim and preserve earlier options.

What makes a choice permanent?

A decision has a lasting consequence when the game carries its result into a later scene instead of resetting the situation after the conversation ends. In practice, that persistence appears in five forms:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Story flags: a choice records that an event happened, a person was warned, or an option was accepted or refused. Later dialogue can check that flag.
  • Closed checks or tasks: attempting a check or moving past a story checkpoint can remove an earlier opportunity, even if the main investigation remains playable.
  • Partner availability: a result can determine whether Kim remains available for the rest of the game.
  • Health and morale costs: damage or morale loss can create an immediate game-over risk and may prevent you from safely attempting another check.
  • Content access: a choice can open or close clues, dialogue, character scenes, rewards, or optional tasks.

Everything else is usually a local branch. A reply may produce a different line, expose a new piece of information, or make the detective look more or less competent without permanently changing the investigation’s main structure. A failed check is therefore not automatically a mistake that ruins the playthrough. The important question is what kind of check it was and whether the scene is an explicit checkpoint.

At-a-glance guide to consequence types

Choice or system Typical permanence What can change Can you recover?
Ordinary dialogue choice Usually temporary or limited to the current conversation Information revealed, tone, and the route into the next exchange Often; the broader ending structure is usually unchanged
Passive check Normally informational An automatic observation or explanation when its requirement is met There is no manual retry; raising the relevant skill can make a later passive check possible
White active check Potentially consequential, but commonly recoverable A scene result, clue, or route through the investigation Usually, after raising the skill or finding a modifier that reopens it
Red active check Often one-shot Damage, a removed option, or a forced alternate scene Only by accepting the result or loading an earlier save
Optional task The task can be skipped, but its content is then lost Experience, clues, dialogue, rewards, and character moments Only before the relevant cutoff; skipping it does not normally block the main plot
Mercenary Tribunal High and persistent Earlier checks close, Kim’s availability can change, and later scenes depend on the result Prepare before entering, or reload a save from before the sequence
Build, clothing, thoughts, or consumables Persistent for as long as the configuration or effect lasts Which checks and passive information are available Change equipment, skills, thoughts, or consumables when the game allows

How checks determine whether a decision sticks

Active checks use more than the base skill

An active check combines the detective’s relevant skill with situational modifiers. Dialogue history, clothing, internalized thoughts, and drugs can all affect the number shown for a check. That means the same choice can be safe in one build and dangerous in another. Before committing, inspect the displayed chance and ask what the result would cost if it fails; a high percentage is not a guarantee, and a low percentage may become acceptable after preparation.

Skills also shape what you notice outside an explicit decision. A build can make one line of investigation easy to access while leaving another obscure. This changes the information and character content you experience even when the broad ending remains similar.

White checks are usually preparation problems

A white check is generally the recoverable kind. If you fail, the check can often be reopened after you raise the relevant skill or acquire a favorable modifier. The game does not promise that every white check can be retried immediately, so treat the failed result as a branch until you confirm that the check has reopened. Experience from tasks, skill points, clothing, thoughts, and consumables can all matter when you return.

Because a white check can be revisited, failing one is often a reason to explore rather than reload. Complete another task, gain experience, adjust your clothing, or change a thought, then look for the check again. This approach preserves authored failure scenes while still giving you a path to the original option.

Red checks can be one-shot commitments

Do not assume a red check is simply a harder white check. Treat it as a possible one-shot commitment. Failure can inflict damage, remove an option, or force a different scene, and the exact consequence depends on the check. If the displayed risk involves health, morale, a partner, or a major confrontation, save first and make sure you have enough resources to survive the result.

A failed red check is not automatically a bad ending. Disco Elysium frequently turns failure into a distinct scene or discovery. The durable danger is concentrated in checks that explicitly close earlier opportunities, consume health or morale, injure Kim, or occur at a major story checkpoint.

Passive checks are information, not usually gates

Passive checks trigger automatically when their requirement is met. They commonly provide an observation, interpretation, or piece of context rather than deciding whether the investigation can continue. Missing one can make a playthrough less informative, but it does not necessarily prevent progress. Skills, clothing, thoughts, and drugs can change which passive checks fire, so different builds naturally reveal different versions of the same case.

Tasks: optional does not mean consequence-free

Tasks are the objectives recorded in the journal. The vast majority are not required to finish the main plot, but every task grants experience. Experience supports skill growth and progression in the Thought Cabinet, so optional work can improve later checks even when it is not a formal story requirement.

Skipping an optional task therefore has two separate effects. You normally remain able to complete the central investigation, but you lose that task’s experience, dialogue, clues, rewards, and any character scenes attached to it. The practical distinction is:

  • Plot requirement: whether the game needs the task completed to reach the next main event.
  • Playthrough consequence: what information, resources, and scenes disappear when you leave it undone.

Before moving through a known story cutoff, check the journal for tasks that are still active and decide whether their content matters to your goals. A completionist run should pursue them early enough to avoid a lockout. A focused run can skip them, but should do so knowingly rather than assuming that optional means irrelevant.

The Mercenary Tribunal is the clearest high-stakes checkpoint

Why you should save before the sequence

The Tribunal is the point at which several kinds of permanence converge. The Tribunal reference identifies it as a sequence where passing the check to take out Kortenaer, or choosing to stand still, closes previous checks and allows Ruud to shoot. Earlier opportunities can therefore disappear as the confrontation resolves, and the result can affect who is present for the remainder of the game.

Create a manual save before entering the sequence, not after the first exchange. A save made earlier gives you room to adjust skills, clothing, thoughts, consumables, and resources instead of forcing you to accept a consequence from inside the confrontation.

Kim’s availability can change for the rest of the game

If you fail to warn Kim, or choose not to warn him, the Tribunal can hospitalize him. In that branch he is unavailable as a partner for the rest of the game. This is a persistent partner consequence, not a temporary conversation penalty, and it is the clearest answer to the question, ‘Does Kim leave permanently?’ He can be absent for the remainder of that playthrough even though the game itself still continues.

The outcome depends on the decisions and checks in the sequence, so do not treat a single dialogue line as the only variable. What matters is the combined result of your warning, your check choices, and whether the confrontation leaves Kim injured.

Tribunal preparation checklist

  1. Make a manual save before entering. Keep a separate slot if you want to preserve the pre-Tribunal state while experimenting.
  2. Check health and morale. Restore both before the confrontation so an unexpected hit or morale loss does not create an avoidable game over.
  3. Review the relevant check modifiers. Change clothing, thoughts, or other available modifiers that improve the skills used by the sequence.
  4. Carry suitable consumables. Have recovery items available before you commit; do not rely on finding a solution after the sequence starts.
  5. Warn Kim when the game gives you the opportunity. Failing to warn him, or choosing not to, can lead to hospitalization and permanent partner loss for that playthrough.
  6. Finish priority optional tasks first. The Tribunal can close earlier checks, so complete any nearby task or check whose clues, experience, or character content you still want.

Build choices change the story you see

Skills determine access, not just success percentages

Skills affect active checks and the automatic information your detective receives. A high skill can open a line of questioning, reveal an explanation through a passive check, or provide context that another build never sees. A low skill can send you through a different route without making the investigation unwinnable.

This is why two players can make similar dialogue choices and still report different experiences. Their builds expose different clues and character reactions. The difference is usually content coverage rather than a wholly different main ending.

Clothing, thoughts, and drugs are decision tools

Clothing and internalized thoughts can supply situational modifiers, while drugs can affect skills and checks. Treat these systems as preparation tools rather than cosmetic customization. If a white check is closed after a failure, look for a legal modifier from equipment or a thought before spending scarce resources. For a high-risk red check, compare the cost of changing your configuration with the cost of accepting the possible failure.

Consumables can also protect a run by offsetting health or morale loss. Their value is highest before a scene that can damage you, remove an option, or affect Kim’s availability. Using one to raise a check chance is not merely an optimization choice; it can determine which branch remains available.

Can you undo a failed check?

There are three practical recovery methods, and each applies to a different kind of failure:

  • Explore and prepare: for a white check, gain experience, raise the relevant skill, or find a modifier that reopens the attempt.
  • Accept the authored failure: many failures lead to a different scene or discovery and do not damage the main ending structure.
  • Reload a pre-checkpoint save: this is the dependable way to undo a red-check result, a partner injury, a health or morale disaster, or a sequence that closed earlier checks.

Reloading is most useful when the consequence is persistent and conflicts with your goal for the run. It is less necessary when a failure simply reveals alternate content. Before deciding, identify whether the result changed a flag, removed a task or check, spent a resource, or only changed the current conversation.

Do choices determine the ending?

Earlier choices can change the final accounting, the scenes available near the end, and whether the detective reaches a particular failure state. They do not all change the main ending conditions. The available community-maintained count lists three main endings and twelve unique game-over outcomes; that is a wiki count accessed in 2026, not an official developer statistic.

Use that distinction when judging a decision’s importance. A dialogue reply can be memorable and still have no persistent effect on the ending. Conversely, a less dramatic action that closes a check, removes an optional task, or changes Kim’s availability can substantially alter the playthrough without creating a separate headline ending.

A decision framework for a first playthrough

Question to ask If the answer is yes Recommended action
Does the choice involve a red check? It may be one-shot and can cause damage or remove an option. Save first and prepare the relevant skill, health, morale, and modifiers.
Does the choice occur at the Tribunal or another explicit checkpoint? Earlier checks or partner availability may be closed. Complete priority tasks, warn Kim, and keep a pre-sequence save.
Is it a white check? The result is often recoverable after preparation. Explore and improve the build before deciding whether to reload.
Is it an optional task? You may lose experience, clues, dialogue, rewards, or character content. Skip only after deciding that the missing content is acceptable.
Does it change health or morale? The immediate result can create a game-over risk. Restore resources before the scene and keep recovery items ready.
Does it affect only the current conversation? The branch is likely local. Follow the option that fits your role-play; reload only for a different scene.

Strategies for different kinds of playthrough

For a first, story-focused run

Let failures stand unless they create a clear permanent loss you do not want, such as Kim becoming unavailable or a treasured task being closed. The game’s failure scenes are authored content, and seeing them can make the investigation feel more coherent than repeatedly reloading every uncertain conversation. Save before the Tribunal and before other moments that visibly warn of a high-risk red check.

For a completionist run

Keep a rotating set of saves before major sequences and check the journal frequently. Pursue optional tasks before story cutoffs so you collect their experience, clues, dialogue, and rewards. Use clothing, thoughts, and consumables to reopen white checks or reveal passive information. Reserve reloads for permanent losses rather than ordinary failed rolls.

For a role-play or replay run

Choose a build that changes what you want to learn. Because skills alter both active checks and passive information, a different configuration can expose a different line of investigation even when the broad ending remains similar. Accepting alternate routes is a legitimate way to see content that a maximally optimized detective would miss.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Reloading every failure: many failures are alternate scenes, not dead ends.
  • Assuming optional means consequence-free: optional tasks still provide experience, clues, dialogue, rewards, and character content.
  • Treating red and white checks as interchangeable: white checks are commonly recoverable; red checks may be one-shot commitments.
  • Entering the Tribunal with empty resources: health and morale loss can turn a survivable branch into a game over.
  • Leaving the only Tribunal save too late: a save after the sequence cannot restore checks that have already closed or Kim’s earlier availability.
  • Expecting every dialogue line to rewrite the ending: the game has persistent flags, but not every local exchange changes the main ending conditions.

The practical verdict

Play ordinary dialogue and many failed checks as branching content, not as errors. Prepare carefully for red checks, protect health and morale, and treat optional tasks as sources of experience and unique content even when they are not required for plot completion. Most importantly, make a manual save before the Mercenary Tribunal, warn Kim, and enter with the modifiers and resources needed for the confrontation. Those habits preserve the choices that genuinely last while letting the game’s many authored failures enrich the investigation instead of forcing a reload after every imperfect roll.
