Direct vs. Regular Mutual Fund Plans in India: What Investors Should Compare

Direct and regular plans are two ways to invest in the same Indian mutual fund scheme. They share a portfolio and fund manager, but have different expense ratios and NAVs. Direct plans exclude distribution expenses, so their ongoing costs are lower; regular plans use a distributor route that may provide assistance. Compare the current costs with the help you actually need—not the labels alone.

What is the difference between a direct and regular plan?

These labels refer to plans within an Indian mutual fund scheme, not necessarily to different funds. The portfolio and fund manager are common, while the plans have separate NAVs and expense ratios. SEBI’s December 2024 consolidated circular states that a direct plan has a lower expense ratio because it excludes distribution expenses and commissions, and that no distribution commission is paid or charged under the direct plan: SEBI Consolidated Circular for Mutual Funds.

Feature Direct plan Regular plan
Scheme portfolio and manager Same scheme portfolio and manager as the corresponding regular plan Same scheme portfolio and manager as the corresponding direct plan
NAV and expense ratio Separate NAV; lower expense ratio because distribution expenses are excluded Separate NAV; expense ratio includes distribution-related costs
Route and support Invest directly through an available direct-plan channel; the investor handles selection and execution unless they arrange separate advice Invest through a distributor, who may provide assistance

AMFI explains the shared portfolio and manager, different expense ratios, and the direct-versus-distributor distinction in its Direct Plan guidance. The comparison is specific to India’s mutual fund structure; these terms should not be assumed to mean the same thing in other countries.

How should you compare the cost?

Check the current TER for the same scheme

The total expense ratio (TER) is an ongoing scheme cost expressed as a percentage of scheme assets. AMFI says it is calculated as a percentage of the scheme’s average NAV; expenses are reflected in NAV. Consult the current fund or AMFI disclosures and compare the direct and regular plans for the same scheme and applicable option. TERs can change, so an old figure may no longer describe the cost. See AMFI’s investor service information on TER, commissions, and transaction charges.

#1 Best Overall

There is no fixed percentage-point saving that applies to every fund. The gap depends on the scheme and its current disclosures. A lower direct-plan TER means fewer distribution-related expenses are charged within that plan; all else equal, lower ongoing costs can contribute to a different long-term value through compounding. That cost difference is not a forecast of returns, a guarantee of savings, or evidence that the scheme will outperform another fund.

Understand how distribution is paid

AMFI says distributor compensation is generally paid by the asset management company within applicable expense limits; it is not necessarily a separate commission bill presented to every investor. Specified transaction charges may also apply if a distributor has opted to levy them. Check the relevant disclosures and transaction details rather than assuming every distributor charges the same separate fee.

What service do you get for the added cost?

A regular plan gives you a distributor route and may offer help with choosing or carrying out investments. What that assistance includes can vary, so ask what service is actually available. A distributor’s involvement does not guarantee better returns.

With a direct plan, you take responsibility for researching and selecting the scheme and completing transactions, unless you separately hire advice. AMFI’s educational guidance presents direct plans as an option for investors who understand their needs, can shortlist funds, and can transact without an intermediary—or who are willing to pay a registered investment adviser separately. It suggests that new or inexperienced investors who need guidance may be better served by distributor support and a regular plan. This is general guidance, not a personal recommendation for every investor.

Is a direct plan right for you?

Ask yourself: Can I confidently choose and manage this fund myself, and is the distributor’s help worth the added ongoing cost to me? Consider your knowledge, available time, and need for assistance. Direct is not automatically right for every investor because it costs less; regular is not automatically better simply because a distributor is involved.

  • If you can assess the scheme and handle transactions independently, compare the current direct-plan TER with the corresponding regular-plan TER.
  • If you want help, find out what the distributor provides and whether you value that service relative to the plan’s added ongoing cost.
  • If you want a direct plan but need professional advice, consider whether separately paid advice from a registered investment adviser suits your needs.

Whichever plan you consider, choosing between direct and regular does not answer the separate question of whether the scheme itself is suitable for you.

How can you avoid selecting the wrong plan?

Not every online platform offers direct plans. AMFI lists fund websites, exchange platforms, MFU, and some private digital portals as possible routes. It says banks and other financial intermediaries act as distributors and cannot offer direct plans on their web portals. Verify the plan label in the transaction flow and in the confirmation; do not assume an online purchase is direct.

  1. Confirm the scheme. Check that you are comparing the same scheme, not two funds with similar names.
  2. Check the route. Use a channel that offers the plan you intend to buy, and verify whether the transaction is routed as direct or regular.
  3. Review the application or order. For a paper application, AMFI advises selecting “Direct Plan” and identifying the application as direct.
  4. Check the confirmation. Verify the selected plan and any distributor details before treating the transaction as complete.

AMFI’s Direct Plan guidance describes available routes and cautions that some portals do not offer direct plans.
