Verdict: The Dimplex DCP9C is a cooling-only portable air conditioner with a published 2.6kW capacity, a stated 9–20m² room range, cool/dry/fan modes, and a supplied window kit and remote. Those are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance results. It may suit a bedroom, study or small living area where permanent air conditioning is impractical, but the available public information does not establish its real-world cooling speed, running cost, measured efficiency or current street price.

What the Dimplex DCP9C is

The DCP9C is a single-unit portable air conditioner sold in Australia. It provides cooling, dehumidification and fan operation through a hose connected to a window kit. Dimplex describes it as a 2.6kW model for rooms from 9 to 20 square metres. The range is a sizing claim from the manufacturer, not a guarantee that every room within those dimensions will cool at the same rate. Sun exposure, ceiling height, insulation, open doors and heat-producing equipment can all change the load a portable unit has to handle.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

This is a cooling-only appliance: there is no heating mode. The specification sheet calls it self-evaporative and gives a dehumidification capacity of 0.54 litres per hour. In practice, the unit still needs to be installed so its hot exhaust air leaves the room; a portable air conditioner cannot deliver its rated cooling effect with the exhaust hose discharging indoors.

Dimplex lists a two-year domestic warranty. The exact conditions, exclusions and process should be checked in the warranty card supplied with the appliance and in the current Dimplex Australia support information.

Accessories Window kit and remote control included A separate kit should only be considered if the supplied parts are missing, damaged or unsuitable.
Warranty Two years domestic Confirm current terms and proof-of-purchase requirements with Dimplex.

The figures above come from Dimplex Australia’s DCP9C specification sheet and instruction manual. Dimplex cautions in the manual: “For greater precision, please always refer to the rating label placed on the product.” If the label on your unit differs from a general document, use the product label when checking electrical or operating details.

How much room can the DCP9C cool?

The stated 9–20m² range

Dimplex’s 9–20m² range is the clearest sizing guidance available for this model. A 2.6kW rating places the DCP9C in the small-to-medium portable category, but room area alone is not enough to predict comfort. A 20m² room with a west-facing glass wall and a poorly sealed door can impose a greater heat load than a shaded, insulated room of the same area.

  • Measure the actual enclosed area rather than counting an open-plan space that the unit must share.
  • Expect more demand in rooms with direct afternoon sun, high ceilings, many occupants or computers and other heat sources.
  • Close doors to adjacent rooms while cooling; otherwise cooled air and capacity are spread beyond the area used for sizing.
  • Position the unit near a suitable window so the exhaust hose can remain as short and straight as practical.

These steps improve the chance of reaching a comfortable temperature, but they do not turn the published room range into an independently verified result. The available CHOICE page does not disclose its member-only cooling score or test data.

Modes, controls and everyday operation

Cool mode

Cool mode runs the refrigeration system and exhausts heat through the window hose. Set a target within the listed 17–30°C thermostat range, choose low or high fan speed, and allow the unit to operate with the room closed. The 2.6kW figure is the published cooling capacity; it is not a measured promise of how quickly your room will reach the set point.

Dry mode

Dry mode is intended for dehumidification rather than maximum temperature reduction. Dimplex lists 0.54L/hour as the dehumidification capacity. That number is a rated figure, not a guaranteed amount of water removed in every Australian climate. Humidity, temperature and ventilation affect the result, and the manual’s drainage instructions take precedence if water accumulates.

Fan mode

Fan mode circulates air without active refrigeration. It can provide air movement when cooling is unnecessary, but it should not be treated as a substitute for the cooling mode on a hot day.

Timer and remote

The timer is specified for up to 24 hours, and a remote control is included. Keep the remote and the unit’s controls available during setup so you can select mode, fan speed and timer settings without repeatedly moving the appliance. The exact button sequence is shown in the supplied manual.

Installation: what you need to do before switching it on

  1. Choose the room and window. Confirm that the room is within the stated 9–20m² range and that a window can accept the supplied kit. Check that the 20.8kg appliance can be rolled to the location without stairs or sharp thresholds that could cause a tip.
  2. Leave operating clearance. Do not block the air inlet or outlet, and do not press the cabinet tightly against furniture, curtains or a wall. The manual is the authority for the exact clearance and placement requirements.
  3. Fit the window kit. Assemble the included components according to the manual and seal the opening as far as the kit allows. A window kit is listed as included; do not assume a generic replacement will fit if a part is lost.
  4. Connect the exhaust hose. Route it to the installed window adaptor with as few bends as possible. The hose must discharge outside, not into a ceiling cavity, another room or a closed balcony.
  5. Use the correct power supply. The manual specifies 220–240V~50Hz. Plug the appliance into an appropriate Australian outlet and follow its electrical safety instructions; avoid unsafe extension arrangements or overloaded circuits.
  6. Let the unit settle if it was transported. Follow the manual’s preparation instructions before starting. If the product label or manual gives a more specific waiting period, use that instruction.
  7. Run a short check. Select cool mode, verify that air is exhausting outdoors, check for warning indicators or leaks, and confirm that the window connection remains stable.

The manual begins with the instruction: “THESE INSTRUCTIONS SHOULD BE READ CAREFULLY AND RETAINED FOR FUTURE REFERENCE.” Keep it accessible rather than relying on memory, particularly for drainage, cleaning and fault codes.

Noise: what the 51–54dB(A) figures do and do not tell you

Dimplex lists 51dB(A) at low fan speed and 54dB(A) at high. These are useful for comparing the manufacturer’s published specification, but they are not an independent test of the sound you will hear beside a bed or desk. The compressor cycling, airflow, exhaust hose vibration, window installation and room acoustics all affect perceived noise.

If you plan to sleep with the DCP9C operating, place it on a solid, level floor, keep the hose from touching vibrating surfaces and use the low fan setting where cooling demand permits. Treat that as a setup strategy, not a claim that the appliance is silent or sleep-tested. The available CHOICE extract does not reveal its member-only fan-high noise test.

Energy use and likely running cost

The rated input is 1.3kW. That is the electrical power figure Dimplex publishes for the unit, not a running-cost estimate and not proof that the compressor draws exactly 1.3kW continuously. A thermostat can cycle the compressor, while fan operation and ambient conditions change consumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To estimate a cost from your own electricity bill, use:

cost = power in kW × hours running × your tariff in dollars per kWh

For example, insert 1.3kW only as the published rated-input figure, then use the number of hours you actually run the appliance and the tariff on your bill. The result is an estimate, not a DCP9C test result. CHOICE’s page lists a running-cost field but withholds it, along with its energy score, from non-members in the available extract.

Portability, footprint and window compatibility

At 280 × 290 × 675mm, the DCP9C has a narrow floor footprint but stands 675mm high. Check the complete route from storage to the operating room: a cabinet that fits beside a wall may still be awkward through a tight doorway or around furniture. The 20.8kg net weight makes rolling preferable to lifting, especially on stairs.

The included window kit is an important part of the installation, not a minor accessory. Before purchase, inspect your window type and opening dimensions against the kit instructions. If the supplied kit is missing or unusable, obtain the exact replacement part or confirm compatibility with Dimplex rather than assuming a universal panel will seal correctly. No replacement part number or kit dimensions are established in the published material.

Maintenance, drainage and safety checks

Keep airflow clear

Dust on filters restricts airflow and can make any portable air conditioner perform poorly. Follow the manual’s cleaning interval and method, disconnect power before maintenance, and allow washable parts to dry fully before refitting. Never operate the unit with a removed filter if the manual says otherwise.

Monitor water in dry or humid conditions

The self-evaporative description means the appliance is designed to expel much of the collected moisture through normal operation, but it does not mean drainage can be ignored in every condition. If the unit indicates a full tank or stops with a water warning, use the manual’s drain procedure and place a suitable container where water cannot damage flooring.

Respect R290 precautions

R290 is the refrigerant specified for the DCP9C. Follow the safety labels and manual requirements for ventilation, servicing and placement. Do not attempt to open the sealed refrigeration circuit or repair a refrigerant fault yourself; use qualified service support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Store it correctly

When the cooling season ends, use the manual’s shutdown and drainage procedure, clean and dry the relevant parts, disconnect the power and store the hose and window components where they will not be crushed. Retaining the kit and remote avoids turning a seasonal appliance into an incomplete installation.

What CHOICE confirms—and what remains unknown

The CHOICE listing identifies the DCP9C as cooling-only, repeats the 2.6kW capacity and 20.8kg weight, gives dimensions of 68 × 29 × 28cm, and notes R290, the supplied window kit and remote. It displays a price of $699, but the page extract does not state a publication date for that figure, so it should not be treated as today’s Australian retail price.

CHOICE’s expert rating, cooling score, energy score, fan-high noise test and running-cost fields are member-only in the available page view. Consequently, this review cannot honestly rank the DCP9C against other portable air conditioners on measured cooling, sound, efficiency or cost. The public evidence supports a specification-based buying decision, not a claim of independently verified performance. See the CHOICE Dimplex DCP9C page if you have access to its full test results.

How to compare the DCP9C with another portable air conditioner

Do not compare portable models on capacity alone. Put each candidate on the same checklist and make sure the figures are measured under comparable conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison point Questions to ask
Independent cooling Is there a comparable laboratory or real-room result, rather than only a manufacturer’s kW claim?
Noise Are low- and high-speed measurements reported using the same method and distance?
Energy Is consumption or running cost measured, and for which tariff, climate or duty cycle?
Room fit Does the stated area match your room’s sun exposure, ceiling height and connected spaces?
Window installation Will the supplied panel fit your window, and is the hose length practical?
Mobility Can you move the weight and footprint through your home without lifting hazards?
Moisture handling Is the unit self-evaporative, and what happens when humidity exceeds its normal drainage capacity?
Accessories Are a window kit, remote, drain hose or other required parts included?
Warranty and support How long is domestic coverage, and where are current manuals and service contacts?
Price date Is the displayed price current, promotional, or simply an undated listing?

Using this method prevents a published specification from being mistaken for a test result and exposes installation problems before you commit to a model.

Who should buy the Dimplex DCP9C?

It is a sensible fit when

  • You need cooling but cannot install a split system or make permanent changes to a property.
  • Your enclosed room is within, or close to, the stated 9–20m² range and has a workable window for the supplied kit.
  • You value a single appliance with cool, dry and fan modes, a 24-hour timer and remote control.
  • You can roll a 20.8kg appliance into position and store it between hot periods.

Look for another solution when

  • You need heating as well as cooling; the DCP9C is listed as cooling-only.
  • Your room is larger, open-plan or heavily exposed to solar heat and you require independently verified capacity for that load.
  • You need a documented measured noise level or running cost before purchase; those results are not public in the available CHOICE extract.
  • Your windows cannot accept the supplied kit and you cannot confirm a compatible, properly sealed installation.

Buying decision

On the published information, the DCP9C is a straightforward small-room portable air conditioner: 2.6kW cooling, two fan speeds, three operating modes, a timer, R290 refrigerant, a supplied window kit and remote, and a two-year domestic warranty. Its 1.3kW input, 51–54dB(A) noise figures, 20.8kg weight and 280 × 290 × 675mm dimensions give you practical planning numbers.

The limits are equally important. The 9–20m² coverage, cooling capacity, dehumidification rate, noise and input figures are manufacturer specifications. The public evidence does not establish real-room cooling time, actual sound character, independent efficiency, running cost, current availability or a current market price. If those unknowns matter, seek the full independent test data and verify the live price and warranty terms before ordering.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
