Choose digital games if instant downloads, remote installation, no disc swapping, and an all-digital library matter more. Neither format is automatically cheaper, and both install substantial game data. Your best choice depends on the title’s current price, your storage capacity, and whether resale has real value to you.
Digital and physical PS5 games at a glance
The two formats deliver the same game software when you buy the same edition, but they differ in how you pay, access, store, and eventually dispose of a game. A disc-drive PS5 contains an Ultra HD Blu-ray drive and accepts PS5 and PS4 game discs. A PS5 Digital Edition has no disc drive; games come from the PlayStation Store or a subscription service.

| Factor | Digital purchase | Physical disc |
|---|---|---|
| Up-front price | Set by the PlayStation Store; sales can reduce the price, but you cannot comparison-shop other sellers for the same digital license. | Compare new, sale and used copies across retailers and marketplaces. The lowest price depends on the exact edition, region and date. |
| Storage use | Game data downloads to console storage or an installed M.2 SSD. | Game data still installs to storage; the disc is a license check and source for some data, not a guarantee of zero download. |
| Convenience | Download immediately, install remotely through PlayStation services and switch games without changing discs. | Requires the disc to be inserted to play. You can install from the disc and keep a physical backup, but changing games means changing discs. |
| Lending and resale | Purchase is associated with the buyer’s PlayStation account and is not a normal resale item. | You can generally lend, trade or sell the disc, subject to the game’s account and online-service requirements. |
| PS4 disc support | Unavailable on a Digital Edition because there is no disc drive. | A disc-drive PS5 can play compatible PS4 Blu-ray games. |
Use this table as a starting point, then check the individual game and your console model. A deluxe edition, a required online service, a disc-based upgrade policy or an unusually large download can change the practical result.

Are digital or physical PS5 games cheaper?
There is no dependable format-wide average price gap. Compare the same game, edition and region at the same time instead of assuming that one format always wins. Sony’s official material does not publish a market-wide average digital discount or an average physical resale percentage.

How digital pricing works
A digital game is sold through the PlayStation Store and tied to the account that buys it. Store sales can make a new release or an older title substantially cheaper for a limited period. The trade-off is a single storefront: you cannot take that license to another retailer, sell it after finishing, or use a competing store’s price for the same account purchase.
How physical pricing works
With a disc, check at least three prices: a new copy, a current sale price and a used listing for the exact edition. Physical retailers can clear inventory, bundle extras or discount a game independently of the PlayStation Store. Used copies may cost less and can retain some value after you finish, although no resale amount is guaranteed.
A fair price comparison method
- Write down the exact title, PS5 or cross-generation edition, region and included downloadable content.
- Record the current PlayStation Store price, including any sale end date shown for your account region.
- Check new physical listings and confirm that the seller is offering the PS5 edition rather than a PS4 copy.
- Check used listings for disc condition, missing codes, shipping and return terms. A low sticker price can disappear once delivery or a non-refundable listing is included.
- Compare the total amount you would pay today, then estimate your likely resale value only as a possible recovery, not as guaranteed savings.
For a game you expect to keep permanently, resale has no immediate cash value and digital convenience may be worth paying for. For a short campaign that you will sell quickly, a discounted used disc can have a lower net cost even when its purchase price is not the absolute lowest.
Do physical PS5 games take less storage?
Usually, no. PS5 games install their playable data to internal console storage whether the license arrives as a download or on a Blu-ray disc. A disc can reduce the amount you download initially, but it does not let the console run a modern PS5 game directly from the disc. Patches, language packs and additional content can also require downloads.

What each format occupies
| Storage event | Digital game | Physical game |
|---|---|---|
| Initial installation | Downloads and installs the game data to console storage. | Copies game data from the disc and may download additional data before play. |
| Patches | Downloads updates when available. | Downloads the same updates; having a disc does not avoid patch storage. |
| Playing after installation | Launches from console or compatible expansion storage. | Launches from installed storage, but the original disc generally must be inserted as the license check. |
| Removing the game | Delete the installed data; the account license remains available for redownload. | Delete the installed data while keeping the disc; reinstall later from the disc and download current updates. |
Expanding PS5 capacity with an M.2 SSD
PlayStation support says an installed M.2 SSD can download, copy and launch PS5 and PS4 games, increasing the space available for an expanding library. Buy a model that meets Sony’s current PS5 compatibility requirements and install it according to the console’s instructions. Expansion helps both formats because downloaded files and disc-installed files use the same playable storage.
Using USB extended storage
USB storage is useful for archiving games, but its behavior differs by generation. Sony states that PS5 games stored on USB extended storage must be copied back to console storage before they can be played. Compatible PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage. A practical setup is to keep rarely played PS5 titles archived on USB, move the one you want to play back to console or M.2 storage, and leave PS4 games on the USB drive when that is more convenient.
Do not buy a physical copy solely to save drive space. The installed footprint is broadly similar, and the disc still needs room for installation, updates and downloadable extras.
Convenience: downloads, discs and internet access
Advantages of digital access
- You can buy and begin downloading without waiting for a shop, courier or disc installation.
- Remote installation lets you start a download from a phone or web interface so the console is ready when you return.
- Switching games does not require leaving your seat to swap discs.
- The license remains available from the purchasing account for redownload after you delete the local installation.
Digital convenience depends on account access, storage space and a reliable enough connection for the download. A very large game can still take hours to obtain, and a store outage or account problem can delay access.

Advantages of a disc
- You can install from the disc even when a retailer’s digital sale is unavailable.
- The disc can be lent, traded or sold, subject to the title’s online and account requirements.
- A disc provides a tangible backup of the release version, although current patches may still be required for the best experience.
Disc convenience declines if you frequently switch between games, travel without the discs or buy a console model without a drive. Keep the disc available whenever you want to launch the installed game; installation alone does not turn it into a transferable digital license.
Can you resell or lend a digital PS5 game?
Not in the normal way. A digital purchase is associated with the buyer’s PlayStation account. You can redownload it through that account, but there is no standard marketplace process for transferring the license to another person, and selling an account creates security and policy risks.
A physical disc is a separate object that can usually be handed to another person, traded or sold. The recipient may still need a PlayStation account, system updates, downloadable content or a paid online service for multiplayer. Some games include one-time codes; a used disc does not guarantee that an unused code is still present or valid.
Calculating the practical cost of a disc
Use this simple calculation when resale matters: net cost = purchase price + unavoidable fees − actual resale proceeds. Include shipping, marketplace fees and the time you are willing to spend listing and posting the game. Treat the resale figure as an estimate based on current listings, not a promise. Prices fall when a game enters a subscription catalogue, receives a reprint or becomes common in used stores.

Is the PS5 disc version worth it?
The disc model is worth the extra flexibility when you expect to buy used games, borrow from friends, resell regularly or play a collection of PS4 discs. It also protects you from being locked to digital-only purchasing if a physical bargain appears later.
The Digital Edition can be the better fit when every game you buy is digital, you value a simpler console with no disc handling, and you are comfortable buying only through the PlayStation Store or subscriptions. Compare the console price difference with the number of physical games you expect to buy; a few used-game savings can matter more than a small initial hardware discount, while a permanently digital player may never recover that difference.
Questions to ask before choosing the console
- Do you already own PS4 Blu-ray games?
- Will family members lend you discs or will you lend games to them?
- Do you routinely sell games after completing them?
- Is your internet connection fast and reliable enough for large downloads?
- Would a disc drive still be useful if a favorite game leaves a subscription catalogue?
Can you use PS4 discs on a PS5 Digital Edition?
No. The Digital Edition has no disc drive, so it cannot read PS4 Blu-ray game discs. You would need to purchase a digital version, use an eligible subscription catalogue or play the disc on compatible hardware.
A disc-drive PS5 supports compatible PS4 and PS5 Blu-ray games. Sony’s PS5 FAQ stated in 2020 that more than 99% of the 4,000-plus PS4 games could be played on either PS5 model. That is a dated Sony figure, not a guarantee that every individual title, accessory or feature works identically; check a specific game’s current compatibility information when it matters.

Disc-based PS4 upgrades
For an eligible PS4 disc upgrade to a digital PS5 version, Sony requires a PS5 with a disc drive. The PS4 disc must remain inserted each time you play the upgraded PS5 game. A Digital Edition cannot perform that disc-based upgrade because it cannot verify the disc.
What Sony’s physical-production change means
On July 1, 2026, Sony announced that physical disc production for new games released on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting in January 2028. Sony described the change as a response to consumers and the wider entertainment industry shifting toward digital distribution. Games released before January 2028 are unaffected by the announcement and remain available in disc format, subject to retailer stock and used-market supply.
This does not make existing discs unusable, and it does not convert them into digital licenses. It does mean that players who prefer buying new releases on disc should pay attention to release timing, print runs and retailer availability after 2027. The announcement also makes a disc-drive console a longer-term choice for accessing an existing physical library, even as new releases increasingly arrive digitally.
Which format suits different players?
| Player profile | Usually the better fit | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Budget-focused buyer who shops used | Physical | Used listings and resale can reduce the net cost, and prices can be compared across sellers. |
| Player who finishes games and sells them | Physical | The disc can be listed or traded after completion. |
| Frequent multiplayer or live-service player | Either | Choose based on the best current price and whether you prefer instant access; online requirements are separate from format. |
| Player with a large PS4 disc collection | Disc-drive PS5 | It can read compatible PS4 Blu-ray games; the Digital Edition cannot. |
| Player who changes games constantly | Digital | No disc swapping and remote installation are the main advantages. |
| Player with limited download bandwidth | Physical, with qualifications | Disc installation can reduce the initial download, but patches and extra content still require internet access. |
| Collector who wants a tangible library | Physical | Discs can be stored, displayed, lent or sold, although online services may still be needed. |
A practical buying checklist
Before buying digital
- Confirm the edition, region and included expansions.
- Check the sale’s end date and whether the discount applies to your account.
- Verify that you have enough console or M.2 SSD space for the game, patches and add-ons.
- Confirm that your account has the correct payment method and that you can access it for future redownloads.
Before buying physical
- Confirm that the listing is a PS5 disc, not only a PS4 copy.
- For used games, inspect seller reviews, photographs or video proof, disc condition and return terms.
- Ask whether downloadable bonus codes have been redeemed.
- Check shipping and taxes before comparing the total with the PlayStation Store price.
- Keep the disc and case together if you may resell the game.
When storage is the real problem
- Delete games you no longer play while keeping digital licenses in your account and physical discs on your shelf.
- Archive PS5 games to USB extended storage, remembering that they must be copied back before play.
- Use USB storage for compatible PS4 games that you want to play without copying them to the internal drive.
- Add a PS5-compatible M.2 SSD when moving games repeatedly becomes more frustrating than the installation cost.
Bottom line for price, storage and resale
Physical is the stronger all-round value for players who buy used, lend games or resell them, provided they own a disc-drive PS5. Digital is the stronger convenience choice for instant, remote and disc-free access. Storage should not decide the format by itself: both versions install game data, and Sony’s M.2 and USB options work around a large library with different copy and playback rules. Compare the exact title and edition on the day you buy, then choose the format whose ownership model matches how you actually play.
