The available evidence does not establish that a named website or AI company is currently using generative AI to copy or rewrite obituaries. What it does document is narrower. Copying obituaries for traffic and revenue is a known problem. AI products that recreate a person from material they recorded while alive exist and are being debated in terms of consent and grief. Some companies have also written rules about disclosure. These are three separate things, and the phrase “AI is plundering online obituaries” runs them together.
Three things the phrase covers
Each of the three activities involves different people, raises different consent questions, and rests on different evidence.

| Consent-based digital legacy products | A living person records stories, video or answers that a service later plays back or uses to generate responses. Consent for that recording and its later use is the central question. | AP, in a report published June 4, 2024, covered StoryFile, HereAfter AI, Eternos and Project December. Obituary copying is documented; the AI link is not
Obituary piracy, the unauthorized copying or rewriting of obituary material for traffic or revenue, is a recognized pattern. The mechanism is straightforward. A page lifts an obituary from a funeral home, newspaper or family tribute, republishes it or rewrites it lightly, and carries advertising or sales links. AP coverage notes that commercial offers can sit alongside obituary content. Memorial merchandise such as flowers, candles or trees is one revenue route reported in this context. That describes how such pages can earn money. It is not a recommendation of any product.

What AP reported about digital afterlife products
The Associated Press covered digital-afterlife offerings in a report published June 4, 2024. It named StoryFile, HereAfter AI, Eternos and Project December, and it separated recorded or prompted memorial interactions from other forms of AI-generated character simulation. The coverage quoted concerns about consent, dignity and grief. Because the report is from 2024, it describes those services as they were then. It is not a current directory of their features.
The clearest expert voice in that coverage belongs to Tomasz Hollanek, identified there as a researcher who worked with a University of Cambridge team studying “deadbots” and “griefbots.” He said: “These are very complicated questions. And we don’t have good answers yet.”

Consent covers more than the upload step
A 2026 peer-reviewed article on AI grief bots sets out principles that include a clear understanding that a bot is an AI recreation, and consent concerning the deceased person’s data and likeness. It treats consent as running through the whole lifecycle: how a recreation is created, how it is used, and whether it can be deleted. That is a broader test than whether a relative was allowed to upload a file.

Company rules show intent, not enforcement
Passings’ acceptable use policy
Passings’ acceptable use policy says expressly that users must not represent AI-generated obituaries, eulogies or notification drafts as having been written entirely by a human. It also prohibits creating a memorial page for a person who has not died. These are concrete, checkable rules. They are still the company’s own terms, and the policy is not an independent audit of how it is enforced.
StoryFile’s Digital Likeness Directive
StoryFile announced a Digital Likeness Directive in 2026 to set out its governance position. The announcement acknowledges that the long-term effects of AI recreations on grief are not known. It states: “The honest state of the evidence is that we do not know what these recreations do to grief over years, and by making the category orderly we may be accelerating its acceptance.” That is a company describing its own uncertainty, not a scientific finding. A company announcement also does not show that the standard is adopted across the sector or that it prevents misuse.

How to check a suspected copied obituary
Start with the original, not the copy. These steps build a record that holds up if you raise the matter with the site, a publisher or a reporter.
Recommended Free Tools
- Save the original obituary with its URL, the publication name and the date it appeared. A full-page screenshot and a copy in a web archive give you two independent records.
- Capture the suspect page together with its publication timestamp, byline and any “last updated” line.
- Compare the two texts line by line, checking names, dates, service details and any quoted passages.
- Check attribution. Does the page credit the original publisher or family, link back to the source, or state that it has permission?
- Note any edits, photographs and monetization on the suspect page, such as advertising, merchandise or flower links.
- Ask the page owner in writing to confirm where the text came from. If a funeral home or newspaper published the original, ask that outlet to confirm it as well.
- Hold off on naming anyone until you have the comparison and any response.
Generic phrasing and factual errors are not evidence of AI use on their own. Both can result from careless copying alone, so a suspected AI origin needs direct evidence about how the text was produced.

Questions to ask a digital legacy provider
If a family is considering a consent-based service, these questions separate products that can be assessed from those that cannot. Get the answers in writing, because service features change over time.
- Was the material recorded while the person was alive, and who gave consent for it?
- Does the service play back recorded answers, or does it generate new speech in the person’s voice or likeness?
- Are generated responses clearly labeled as AI-generated?
- Which sources feed the service, and can the family see them?
- Who can access the result, and can family members contest or delete it?
- What happens to the material if the company closes or is sold?
What the search phrases reveal
People looking into this topic often use phrases such as “AI-generated obituaries,” “AI grief bots” and “AI version of the dead.” Those searches show concern, not proof. One public forum post asked whether AI could access unreleased death information to produce a fake obituary. That is a question from a forum user. It is not evidence that such access occurred, and this article does not treat it as fact.
What would be needed before naming a site
Naming a site as an AI-driven obituary plunderer requires more than a suspicion based on tone or phrasing. Responsible reporting on the question would need:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsQuick Recap
- Archived copies of the original and the disputed page, with timestamps
- A side-by-side text comparison showing what was copied or rewritten
- A written response from the site operator, the original publisher and the family
- Independent corroboration that software produced the text, rather than careless copying or ordinary error
- Documentation of any monetization on the disputed page
