Short answer: a digital game purchase is an entitlement attached to your platform account, not a transferable disc. You can usually download it again on an authorized device, but access can depend on activation settings, license checks, subscriptions and the game’s own servers. Offline play and family sharing work only after you configure them for the specific platform and title.
The practical buying questions are therefore connected: where the game will be installed, whether another person must use it at the same time, what happens when you lose internet access, and how the license behaves if you replace a console or a store changes its terms. The guide below covers those decisions for PlayStation 5, Xbox, Steam, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

What a digital game purchase actually gives you
When you buy a download, the platform records an entitlement on your account. Microsoft describes a license as “a digital key that confirms the user’s right to access content on the device.” Sony, Valve and Nintendo use different terminology, but the operating principle is similar: the account that completed the purchase is the owner of the platform entitlement, and an authorized console or computer is allowed to use it.
The entitlement is not the same thing as owning a physical object. There is no disc to lend or resell, and reinstalling normally requires signing in to the purchasing account or using a console that has been authorized for that account. A publisher can also require an online service, a separate account, or a subscription even though the game files are installed locally.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Three checks happen in practice
- Account check: the platform verifies that the signed-in account bought the game or has a valid subscription entitlement.
- Device check: a console or PC may need to be designated as the account’s shared, home or offline device.
- Game-service check: the title may contact a publisher server for multiplayer, authentication, progression, anti-cheat or downloadable content.
These checks explain why “downloaded” does not always mean “permanently playable offline.” A game can remain on a drive yet fail to launch when its license cannot be validated or its required service is unavailable.
Check these details before you buy
Use the store listing and the platform settings to answer the following questions before paying. Install sizes change with patches and optional language packs, so treat the number shown on the current listing as the planning figure rather than relying on a generic average.
- Which account will own it? Buy on the account that should retain the entitlement. Changing the email address or moving a profile later does not ordinarily merge purchases into another account.
- Will two people need the game at once? Sharing systems generally permit a defined household arrangement, not unlimited simultaneous use. Check the platform-specific rules below before assuming one purchase covers two active players.
- Does the game require an online service? Look for an “online required,” “internet connection required” or publisher-account notice. A single-player campaign may work offline while multiplayer, cloud progression or anti-cheat does not.
- How large is the install? Check the listing for the base download, required free space and any separately listed expansions. Leave additional room for patches and temporary installation files.
- Where will it be stored? Confirm whether your platform lets current-generation games run from an expansion device or only stores them there for later copying to internal storage.
- What happens to saves? Decide whether you will use cloud backup, local transfer, or both. A storage card or expansion drive is not automatically a save-data backup.
Offline play: prepare it before you lose internet access
Offline access is a setup task, not a promise attached to every digital purchase. Download the complete game and its updates while connected, enable the platform’s sharing or offline setting on the device you will carry, and launch the title once online. Then test it by temporarily disconnecting the network. If the game uses a publisher service, verify which parts still function.

PlayStation 5
On PS5, enable Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play on the intended household console. Sony says this allows anyone using that PS5 to “play your games and media even when the console is offline” and to use purchased and downloaded content. The setting can be active on only one PS5 at a time for an account.
The purchasing account can still sign in on another PS5, but the second console does not receive the same automatic household access. If a title displays a padlock, check the account that bought it, the console’s network connection, the license status and whether the game came from a subscription that is no longer active. Re-downloading the game does not repair an entitlement problem by itself.
Offline play also stops where the title’s own design requires a server. A campaign that launches without a connection can still lose online multiplayer, cloud features or server-side progression.
Xbox consoles and Windows PC
Xbox sharing uses a Home Xbox designation on a console. The Home Xbox receives the account’s device license, allowing other profiles on that console to use eligible purchased games. The account owner can use a different Xbox by signing in, but the arrangement is not an unrestricted account transfer.
On Windows PC, Microsoft’s equivalent is an Offline permissions setting for the device. Set the intended computer before travel, download the game and updates, and launch it while connected so the app can establish its license state. Microsoft documents periodic renewal for some offline licenses, so treat PC offline access as conditional rather than permanent.

Xbox licensing also includes device limits and concurrency checks. If another console is using the account or the game at the same time, one session can be stopped or asked to sign in again. A title’s own online requirement overrides the console’s offline license.
Steam
In the Steam client, sign in while online, install the game, apply updates and choose Steam > Go Offline before disconnecting. Steam Support says a family-library game can be played offline when that game supports Family Sharing. Games excluded from Family Sharing or dependent on a publisher launcher, anti-cheat service or persistent connection may not work.
Steam’s offline mode is client- and game-dependent. Test the exact title, including any launcher it opens, before relying on it during a trip. If the client reports that it cannot validate ownership, reconnect, sign in to the owning account and re-enable offline mode.

Nintendo’s model distinguishes a virtual game card from an online license. A virtual game card is loaded to a console for local use; an online license lets the account start an eligible download while signed in, subject to Nintendo’s multi-console rules. Load the virtual game card or configure the online-license option while connected, then test the game on the console you plan to use.
Nintendo states that digital games and downloadable content are tied to the Nintendo Account. Under the ordinary multi-console model, one account cannot use its games on multiple consoles simultaneously. Family lending and virtual-game-card movement therefore differ from simply signing in everywhere. A title that needs an online service will still require that service after its license is prepared.
How household sharing works on each platform
PS5: one shared console
Console Sharing and Offline Play is designed around one enabled PS5. Other users on that console can play the owner’s downloaded games and use compatible media while offline. Moving the setting to a second PS5 disables the first console’s automatic sharing, so it is best suited to a designated family-room console rather than several homes.
Xbox: Home Xbox and offline device licensing
The Home Xbox console receives the device portion of the license, while the purchaser uses their account on another console. The setup supports a household arrangement but has concurrency and device limits. Change the Home Xbox only when necessary, because frequent switching can be restricted by Microsoft’s account rules.

Valve says Steam Families allows users to play games from “up to five close family members libraries,” meaning a family group can contain six members in total. Ownership stays with the purchasing account; membership provides shared access rather than a transfer of ownership.

Family Sharing is title-specific. Some games are excluded for technical or publisher reasons, and a shared copy cannot necessarily be used by two people at once when the family owns only one copy. If simultaneous play is important, check the game’s sharing eligibility and copy requirements before creating the family group.
Nintendo: lending, online licenses and account limits
Nintendo’s virtual-game-card and family-lending features let an account arrange access on designated consoles, but they do not turn a purchase into a freely transferable file. Nintendo’s guidance says the account cannot access games on multiple consoles simultaneously under the ordinary model. Decide whether you are moving the virtual card, lending it to a family member for a period, or using an online license; each has different availability while the game is in use elsewhere.
Storage expansion: what you can install and play from
| Platform | Expansion path | Can current games run directly from it? | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | Compatible internal M.2 SSD, up to 8TB | Yes, compatible PS5 and PS4 games can be stored, downloaded, managed and played from the high-speed expansion | The SSD must meet Sony’s compatibility and heat-dissipation requirements; verify the model and heatsink before installation |
| Xbox Series | Internal storage or an approved expansion card | Current-generation titles require the internal drive or approved expansion path; an ordinary USB drive is primarily for storage and transfer | Check the card approved for your Xbox Series model and the title’s generation before buying |
| Steam PC | Additional internal or external PC drive | Yes, when the drive is connected and formatted for the PC; Steam can manage libraries on multiple drives | Drive speed, interface, free space and another PC’s file-system support affect portability |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | microSD Express card, up to 2TB for game storage | Yes, games and downloadable content can use supported card storage | Ordinary microSD cards are not supported for Switch 2 game storage |
| Nintendo Switch | microSD card supported by the original console | Downloaded games can use the card under the original Switch rules | Do not assume original-Switch card compatibility for Switch 2; Switch 2 requires microSD Express |
PS5 M.2 SSD
Sony’s current guidance allows expansion up to 8TB with a compatible M.2 SSD. The drive must fit the PS5’s physical and performance requirements and use an appropriate heatsink. Once formatted, it can hold and run compatible PS5 and PS4 games. An external USB drive is useful for archiving and moving games, but PS5 games stored there must be copied back to internal or M.2 storage before playing.

Xbox Series storage
Xbox Series consoles use their internal storage or an approved expansion-card path for current-generation titles. A standard USB drive can preserve games and reduce redownloads, but it is not a universal substitute for the approved high-speed path. Check whether a title is labeled for Xbox Series before deciding where it can run.
Switch 2 microSD Express
Switch 2 supports microSD Express cards up to 2TB for game storage. A conventional microSD card is not supported for Switch 2 game storage, even if it worked in an original Switch. Buy a card explicitly marked microSD Express and verify its capacity and compatibility with Nintendo’s current specifications.
Save data is separate: Nintendo says save data is stored in system memory and cannot be copied to a microSD card. Use the system’s transfer process or Save Data Cloud where supported rather than treating the card as a backup.
Moving games to another console or computer
Moving a license is not the same as copying files
Game files can often be copied, but the entitlement remains with the purchasing account. On a new console, sign in to that account and download the game again or use the platform’s transfer utility. A copied installation will not grant access to a different account.

Steam PCs
Steam supports local-network transfers. Its support FAQ says installation and update files can be copied between PCs without downloading them again from Steam’s content servers when both clients are online and connected to the same LAN. Enable the transfer option in Steam’s download settings, keep both PCs awake, and make sure the destination has enough free space.
This transfers files, not ownership. The destination still needs to sign in to an account entitled to the game, and Family Sharing eligibility remains title-specific.
Nintendo consoles
Nintendo’s multi-console tools can move virtual game cards and transfer save data, but they are account operations rather than unrestricted file copying. Follow the on-screen transfer process while both consoles are available and connected as instructed. A virtual game card loaded on one console may be unavailable on another until you move or return it, and a lent card follows its lending rules.
Cloud saves, local storage and backup are different
Cloud-save space protects progress; it does not increase the room available for game installs. PlayStation Plus lists 100GB of online storage for PS5 and PS4 saves under its current support information. The subscription and the relevant save-sync settings must remain available for that backup to work.
Local M.2 storage, an Xbox expansion card, a Switch 2 microSD Express card or a PC drive increases installation capacity. None of those devices automatically preserves saves if the console is lost or the card fails. Keep cloud synchronization enabled where supported and perform a manual transfer before changing consoles.
- Install storage: holds game data, patches and downloadable content.
- Cloud saves: stores progress remotely under the platform’s account and service rules.
- Local transfer: moves data between devices but may require both devices to be present.
- Publisher servers: may hold online characters, inventories or achievements that cannot be recovered from a local game folder.
Subscriptions, delisted games and store changes
A game obtained through a catalog subscription is not equivalent to a purchased entitlement. Access normally lasts only while the subscription is active, the title remains in the catalog and the account satisfies the platform’s terms. Do not assume that downloading a catalog game creates permanent ownership.
A purchased game can also depend on infrastructure outside the store. Multiplayer matchmaking, account authentication, cloud progression and downloadable content may stop working if the publisher retires those services. The local campaign may continue, but that outcome is title-specific and cannot be guaranteed from the purchase alone.

Common failure symptoms and fixes
“The game has a padlock” on PS5
- Sign in to the account that bought the game.
- Check Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses.
- Confirm the PS5 is online and that Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled on the intended shared console.
- Check whether the title came from an expired subscription or requires a publisher service.
Xbox says the owner must sign in
Verify that the intended console is set as the account’s Home Xbox, or sign in with the purchasing account on a non-Home console. End an active session on another device if a concurrency check is blocking launch. On PC, reconnect and renew the offline permission before testing again.
Steam will not start offline
Reconnect, sign in to the owning account, apply pending updates and choose Steam > Go Offline again. Test the game without its publisher launcher if possible. If it is a family-library title, confirm that the title supports Family Sharing; eligibility cannot be inferred from the fact that another game in the same series works.
Switch 2 does not recognize a card
Confirm that the card is microSD Express, not a conventional microSD card. Check that it is inserted correctly and recognized in system settings. If the problem persists, use Nintendo’s supported migration and redownload process; do not expect save data to appear on the card because saves reside in system memory.
Choosing the right setup for common situations
You travel with one console
Install the game and updates, activate the console’s offline or sharing setting while online, launch once, and test with the network disabled. Prefer titles whose store listing does not require a persistent publisher connection. Carry enough local storage for patches rather than depending on a hotel connection.
A family shares one main console
Make that console the platform’s shared or Home device, buy games on the account that should retain them, and create separate user profiles for each player. Check simultaneous-use limits before promising two people can play the same purchase together.
You own two consoles
Decide which device gets automatic household access and which will require the purchasing account to sign in. Move the designation only when needed, because changing it can remove offline access for users on the previous device.
You have several gaming PCs
Use Steam’s local-network transfer to copy installations between PCs, keep the owning account secure, and verify Family Sharing eligibility for each title. An external drive can archive installers and libraries, but the destination PC still needs an entitled account and a compatible operating system.

Quick Recap
A final pre-purchase checklist
- Record the account that will own the purchase and protect it with current recovery details.
- Read the listing for install size, online requirements, publisher-account requirements and subscription restrictions.
- Decide whether another household member needs simultaneous access.
- Configure offline, Console Sharing, Home Xbox, Steam Offline Mode or Nintendo’s virtual-game-card option before travel.
- Buy only platform-compatible expansion hardware: PS5 M.2 SSD, approved Xbox Series expansion card, PC drive or Switch 2 microSD Express.
- Keep cloud saves enabled where available and perform a console transfer before selling or resetting a device.
- Remember that an archive or copied file preserves data, not ownership; the account and license checks still apply.
