The pre-sunrise timing let sunlight illuminate the high-altitude exhaust while observers on the ground were still in darkness.
What appeared over the East Coast
WJXT/News4JAX reported that a Falcon 9 lifted off at 6:33:44 a.m. EDT on October 13, 2026, from Space Launch Complex 40 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station. The station said the display was seen across Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia. The local report identified the payload as NASA’s Commercial Resupply Services 35 mission (CRS-35). Those launch and mission details come from the same-day local coverage.

The plume spread into a broad, luminous shape that looked like a jellyfish. “Jellyfish” is a visual nickname, not a meteorological classification. The shape alone does not show that the object was a natural cloud.

Why a rocket plume can glow before sunrise
At the launch site, dawn may still leave the surface dark while the rocket’s exhaust rises high enough to reach direct sunlight. The illuminated exhaust then appears bright against the darker lower atmosphere. NASA’s March 19, 2026 Astronomy Picture of the Day explains this same “jellyfish” effect in a comparable SpaceX launch image.

NASA describes rocket exhaust in this context as consisting mostly of water vapor and carbon dioxide. As the plume expands at high altitude, its changing density and the angle of sunlight can produce the enormous, soft-edged appearance seen from many miles away. The Astronomy Picture of the Day explains the optical effect; it is not a mission record for the October 13 launch.

Is it a noctilucent cloud?
Not necessarily. Noctilucent, or night-shining, clouds are natural high-altitude ice clouds that can glow after sunset or before sunrise when they catch sunlight from below the observer’s horizon. NASA research shows that morning rocket launches can contribute material and disturbances that affect the appearance of these clouds away from the polar regions, but that broader finding should not be used to relabel this particular sighting.
The October 13 display was reported as the Falcon 9’s launch plume. Calling it a noctilucent cloud would claim a natural-cloud identification that the available event report does not establish.

NASA has also reported that about 3% of the ice in each noctilucent-cloud crystal is meteoritic, based on a 2012 article describing a SOFIE finding. That number concerns natural noctilucent-cloud ice crystals, not the Falcon 9 exhaust.
In NASA’s 2022 account of rocket launches and noctilucent clouds, Naval Research Laboratory scientist Michael Stevens said: “Space traffic plays an important role in the formation and variation of these clouds.” The statement refers to natural noctilucent clouds and the way launch activity can influence them over time; it is not a description of the October 13 plume.

What it was not
Not proof of a naturally formed cloud
The jellyfish outline resulted from expanding, sunlit exhaust. A cloud-like appearance is common in launch photography, but appearance and origin are different questions.

Not a visible sporadic-E layer
NASA’s 2026 explanation of sporadic-E research describes these features as invisible metallic sheets in the ionosphere that can affect radio waves. They are not the glowing structure people saw over Florida and Georgia.
NASA’s overview of sporadic-E layers.
How to identify a similar sighting
- Check the time. A display appearing shortly after a known pre-sunrise launch is more likely to be illuminated exhaust than an ordinary weather cloud.
- Look for rapid change. Rocket plumes expand and reshape noticeably over minutes as they disperse at altitude.
- Check the viewing area. Launches from Cape Canaveral can create visible displays across parts of Florida, Georgia and farther along the coast, depending on trajectory, altitude and atmospheric conditions.
- Verify a launch report. Match the sighting’s time and direction with a launch provider, spaceport or reliable local news report. For this event, the local report gave the precise 6:33:44 a.m. EDT time and identified the Falcon 9.
You do not need a telescope or specialized equipment to understand or see this effect. A phone can record it, although a tripod is an optional way to reduce camera shake during a brief display.
Quick Recap
