What happened on the final play?
At Lane Stadium in Blacksburg, Virginia Tech had a chance to take the lead late against Pittsburgh. John Love attempted a 36-yard field goal with three seconds remaining. Officials ruled it no good, and Pittsburgh held on for a 35–33 win, according to FOX Sports’ account of the game.
That is the official result described in the reporting—not a Virginia Tech win later overturned after review.
Was Love’s kick good?
The available reports do not settle that question. Videos posted from different positions led fans to conflicting interpretations: some angles appeared to show the ball inside the left upright, while others appeared consistent with the no-good ruling. OutKick described the footage as ambiguous; its report is not an independent, calibrated analysis of the ball’s path.

A camera’s position matters. A view from in front of or behind the posts may make the ball appear to pass on one side even when perspective obscures its actual path relative to the uprights. The key questions are whether the video shows the ball at or below upright height and whether it reveals its position as it crosses the plane of the uprights. Crowd and player reactions cannot establish that trajectory.
So “robbed” is a fan reaction, not a verified finding that officials made an error. The reporting reviewed does not prove either that the kick was good or that the no-good call was correct.

Why wasn’t the call reviewed?
OutKick reported that the kick passed above the uprights and therefore could not be reviewed under the NCAA replay provision it quoted. That report gives the provision’s distinction: a field-goal attempt may be reviewed as inside or outside the uprights when the ball is lower than the top of the uprights; if it is higher than the top of the uprights as it crosses the end line, the play may not be reviewed. The NCAA’s football rules page provides the official rules resources, including a 2026 instant replay case book. The precise applicable 2026 wording and how officials determined the ball crossed the end line are not established by the incident reports cited here. Accordingly, the explanation that this attempt was unreviewable should be understood as the reporting’s account, not as an independently verified application of the current rulebook. NCAA and NFL replay rules should not be assumed to be identical.

What did Virginia Tech’s coach say?
A secondary page reproducing a New York Post report attributes this response to Virginia Tech head coach James Franklin when asked about the kick: “To be honest with you, from my angle, I don’t know.” The page also says Franklin praised Love and noted that the officials’ ruling was final. The quote is reproduced secondhand, so it is weaker evidence than an original interview transcript or recording. See the reproduced report attributed to the New York Post.

What the footage and reports can—and can’t—show
- Established in the game report: Pittsburgh won 35–33, and officials ruled Love’s 36-yard attempt with three seconds left no good.
- Reported about the replay issue: OutKick says the ball went above the uprights, making the attempt unreviewable under the NCAA provision it quotes.
- Not established by the available coverage: Whether the ball actually passed inside the left upright, whether the ruling was incorrect, or the exact 2026 rule language governing this trajectory.
