Yes—but the $6 billion figure first appeared in an April 2024 report about a proposed xAI fundraise, not a completed payment to Elon Musk personally. xAI announced a $6 billion Series B on May 26, 2024, then announced a separate $6 billion Series C on December 23, 2024. The distinction matters: the first report described negotiations, while the later company statements confirmed two separate rounds.
What happened to the reported $6 billion raise?
In April 2024, TechCrunch reported that xAI was seeking $6 billion at an $18 billion pre-money valuation. The report named Sequoia Capital and Future Ventures as participants in the prospective financing. Those details described a raise that was still being negotiated or nearing completion, not a confirmed final round. TechCrunch’s April 26, 2024 report

Who backed xAI’s Series B?
xAI’s announcement named these investors and participants:
- Valor Equity Partners
- Vy Capital
- Andreessen Horowitz
- Sequoia Capital
- Fidelity Management & Research Company
- Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal
- Kingdom Holding
- Other participants, not all individually named in the announcement
The April report had also named Future Ventures, but xAI’s official Series B announcement did not include it in its published list. The available announcements do not disclose each investor’s check size or a complete term sheet, so it is not possible to say how much any one participant committed.

Was the $6 billion a loan?
xAI described the financing as a Series B funding round, not a loan. Its announcement does not publish a full term sheet or set out all transaction terms. The sources therefore support describing this as a fundraising round, but do not establish the specific terms or rights attached to each investment.
What was xAI valued at?
The April 2024 report put the proposed Series B at an $18 billion pre-money valuation—that is, a reported valuation before the new capital was added. That figure belongs to the prospective financing described in the report; it should not be presented as the confirmed valuation for the completed round.

In December 2024, xAI announced a separate $6 billion Series C. Bloomberg later described that round as valuing the company at more than $40 billion. This is a later transaction and a different valuation context, not an updated figure for the April proposal. Bloomberg’s December 23, 2024 report
